Removing wayward epoxy from a shaft without damaging the paint?

Unfortunately, there is a random glob of what I assume is dried epoxy in a very conspicuous spot on my driver shaft. It is a dark grey or black blob on the ion finish portion of a diamana which points straight aup t me during address.

 

I'm hoping to somehow remove or at least minimize it without totally ruining the paint. Just an obessive cosmetic issue, obviously doesn't affect play.

 

I started scraping at it with a razor blade and had some success. I'm now down to a thin layer but I'm scared to go any further with such a blunt instrument.

 

Does anyone have any pro tips to share? Heat, some type of chemical, or maybe super fine steel wool? Some combination thereof?

Razor blade will scrape the finish. If you have a duller knife use it. I would just heat the spot for a few seconds...like literally seconds and lightly scrape it off. Then clean the area with mineral spirits or any solvent, lighter fluid, goo gone.

Edge of a credit card should knock it off without damaging the shaft finish.

Would not use an open flame. If you have a heat gun, use that or a hair dryer if it gets hot enough. Just keep heating it and scraping it every 30 seconds until it comes up. Plastic puddy knife should work well.

Credit card always works for me. No heat required.

Using heat is asking for trouble. The paint will soften before the epoxy, assuming halfway decent epoxy was used.

Take a cigarette lighter...bic...and heat it for 5 seconds. Not to melt it to expand it...then you can use your fingernail and scrape it off. Or credit card or dull knife.

I'll give it a try without heat first i guess. I'll pick at it with a credit card for a while. It feels very hard, much harder than a credit card...

Thanks! Credit card worked like a charm. As you suggested, my wife did in fact have a candle lighter with i used gently for a few seconds, held the flame about 1 inch away from the actual shaft.

 

Epoxy is gone and the shaft finish looks perfects

I’ve done that quite a bit...it just seems to get the epoxy spot where you don’t have to scrape much. Like BigBen said it can be dicey considering the finish on the shaft. That few seconds of very light heat seems to help. Glad it worked well
