Mitsubishi Tensei AM2 iron shafts?

halfsumo

Recommended Posts

I see that Titleist's new iron line is offering a new graphite iron shaft from Mitsubishi. Ascending weight Tensei's. As a Tensei White guy AND a graphite iron shaft player, I am wondering if anyone with knowledge of these shafts could chime in with any experience/details. I was 99% ready to order a new set of Mizuno's with the Accra 124's, but these have me interested, assuming the White even come in an X flex (and hopefully if they do they will be few grams heavier)...those would be a good fit for me on paper.

^^^ giving this thread a bump as I'm thinking of ordering the Tensei AV White AM2 shaft in some new Titleist T200.

I know @Pepperturbo plays these and have followed his comments in various other threads.

Does anyone know the balance point of this shaft in Stiff and X-Stiff flexes ?

I plan to to do a very short length increment MOI rebuild on them, and would prefer a low balance point to deal with my swing-weight targets.   The MCA site has no specific balance point number, but states a high kick-point.

https://www.mca-golf.com/products/av-white-am2-irons

I've been using Steelfiber i95cw Regular in my last several builds, as i95cw will measure about  2-3 SWP heavier than the heavier i110cw shafts.  I'd like to try some other graphite shaft for a change of scenery, and I like that they are ascending weight too.

IMO these do NOT have a low-balance point, I suspect mid-high at least.  Mitsu only provides "S" and "X" in AV White as they are designed for STRONGER players.  I have to put a solid swing on mid-short irons, as they play stronger than flex.  Current SW of 2-9i is D1-D2, PW & SW and LW have heavier SW.  AV Blue has a lower balance point, but its lighter weight with mid-bend.

If you've been playing i95 "R", I would NOT suggest these shafts.  I also have a set of i95cw "S", and prior to AV White, I played i110cw "S" in PW-2i at D2, and 125cw "S" in SW & LW at D5.

I have played three times with these. Great shafts , very tip stiff , low flight , very tight . Might take a bit getting use to the weight but so far really like them. East on the elbows , biggest reason I bought them .

I tried them for about a year- long time S400/X100 player.  They were…fine?  I really like the concept of the ascending mass, but in the end they just didn’t get heavy enough, and I felt that an inordinate amount of extra head weight was necessary to achieve a comfortable-for-me swingweight.  If MCA would make them in 3gr steps up to 125g or 130g for the 9/P shaft, I’d order a set tomorrow. For now it’s back to S400.

Side note on flex- the X’s, to me, seemed every bit as stout as an X100

Edit: all of this is for the White X's

I would assume the Red would be alot more forgiving from the specs.  Just wonder if they spin too much...

Have the Reds in my Vokeys and I love them. Always wondered how they would work in my irons.

For fifteen plus years I played 120g PX 6.0.  Heavier weight steel shafts have always worked better with my fast tempo.  Then Father time started busting my distance azz, so I moved to composite knowing certain OEM's make composite in ways that make transitioning and swing weighting easy and there's a potential for an increase in distance.

Update - I've played MCA Tensei AV AM2 Red S in the new T350, Tensei AV AM2 Blue R in the new T200, and Stout Tensei AV AM2 White S in 620 MB & CB sets, now Tensei AV AM2 Blue S in the new T150.  For some reason, "R" flex in iron shafts and my tempo never works.

In any case, Tensei AV AM2 White is my favorite, still have the set, and 90S in 718 TMB 2 iron.  My T200 2 iron has Tensei AV Raw White Hybrid 90S.  Between the above Tensei shafts and sister, MCA MMT, they are two of the best composite shafts on the market.  Unfortunately, I was told Tensei AM2 line is only available though Titleist equipment purchase or secondary used market.

Steelfiber is the other kind of composite that I like.  Years back my first composite experience was with Steelfiber i110cw & i125cw.  The difference comes down to Steelfiber feels a bit harsher at impact, compared to the MCA smoothness in Tensei and MMT lines.  Moving from PX to Steelfiber was natural because of that similar harshness.

Anyway, I get a smidgen more distance from the AM2 Blue S 70g-88g ascending weight, making performance comparable to constant weight MMT 85S and 95S, which I have in other clubs.  My T150 4i-9i were built to D2 and set PW D3, and no gapping issues either.  Stiff flex gives me my preferred mid-launch, plenty of control and green spin, while dispersion is hardly noticeable.

Don't get me wrong, it's going to take time for me to get used to lightweight shafts, mostly because of my sensitivity to weight and varying weight over the set.  It's my hope swing weight helps mask that to some degree, and I can get on with playing golf.

I just turned 61. Driving distance is 230 yards. 11 HCP.  About to purchase the T200 irons. I tried them in the Blue AM2, felt a little heavy to me. So I’m thinking about ordering them in the Red AM2 shafts. I been throwing around maybe ordering them with the Tour AD75. Seems a little pricey at 100 dollar upgrade. I wish I knew more, is it worth the upgrade? Is it an upgrade over the AM2 Red? I  was told by a guy at the pro shop that the Tour AD shafts are an old shaft and don’t have the technology that the AM2 Reds have. Not sure if that is correct. If I went with the Red AM2 shafts in my irons and wedges I would progress to a lighter shaft in my hybrid, FW and driver and only have a 15 gram difference between driver and wedges. I think that might suit me better since I seem to like a D0 C9 swing weight in my driver and irons. I’m not a real strong swinger of the club. Just wanted to get your thoughts since it seems you are going thru the same aging process I am. lol. I read allot of your post and and feel that you are knowledgeable in the game.

Yep, this Father time business is a B-I-T-**.  Wish I was 61 again...but 13 more…yuck. 🙂

T350 & T200 sets have gone to good homes, and the T150 set collects dust.  I settled on having Pro 95i and 115i Tour S - SS1, had T100 bent 1' strong and adjusted lie .5 flat, which improved my ball striking.  Plus, the Tour S line has a mid to high bend which is better for my fast tempo.

Not a strong swinger, consider AM2 Red in T200 heads, great combo.  They are nice shafts and that pro is correct, they have the latest and greatest tech and AM2 in 8-P.  Older AD75 are constant weight, which is fine.  Which ever you choose, both shafts have mid-high trajectory and mid-spin.  You can't go wrong either way.  I am partial to Tensei.  Part of the increased pricing for AD iron shafts, they are made in Japan.  Anyway, good luck, got to get to my tee time.
