Consequences of an Outside takeaway?

macedan

Recommended Posts

It's common to hear threads about inside takeaways and pulling the club inside right off the bat, but what exactly are the pitfalls of an outside takeaway? Looking at my swing down the line it is apparent my first moves off the ball to the right (RH player) and gets into the air rather quickly. I often hear the consequences of an inside takeaway include getting stuck and rerouting over the top, however, even with an opposite takeaway I also struggle with getting steep on the downswing and flipping.

The club swings on an arc away from the target on the back swing and toward the target on the forward swing. Provided you are aligned correctly, parallel left of your target, swinging on an arc necessarily results in the club swinging to the inside on the back swing and from the inside on the forward swing. All of this is good,

To your question, what happens if your take the club back to the outside? If you take the club back to the outside you will either return the club to the ball, from the outside, which is bad, or you will have to re-route the club at some point to get it swinging freely toward the target at impact. Re-routing can be done but it takes a bit of practice to do it consistently.

Tough to explain my positioning without posting a swing video, however for current reference, slightly before lead arm is parallel my club head is in line with my lead shoulder.

Swing video for reference. First half is an 8 iron approach into a par 3 and the latter is a full 54* wedge approach.

Edit: if someone knows how to post the video straight to here rather than just my link I would be very thankful

Simplistically speaking the left arm is one side of a compass that you would use to draw a circle. If you move the left arm out and away from you you'll destroy the circle. If you don't reroute it back you'll miss the ball or you'll hit it with a glancing blow.

Also, why would you want you and the club going back in two different directions?

I don't, I've just been stuck in this sequence for awhile now where I can't find a comfortable move away from the ball to begin my swing. I fought a massive cupped lead wrist and across the line in the past and as of the past few months this move away is the only thing that currently feels somewhat repeatable for me. I'd like to find something repeatable that allows me to transition to better positions through my swing but I'm lost as to how to achieve that.

The right knee and hip are moving too much artificially. The rest is likely a reaction.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Are you referring to the entirety of the motion, or during one piece? I've been working on a deeper pivot. Early in the year I was standing practically fully upright, very little bend at the hip and shoulders pointed way outside the ball at the top of my swing. One of my first lessons I had taken I was advised not to let my torso/head drop with my left knee during my takeaway. So I developed a really flat pivot and thus far I think this has been my attempt to establish some depth again.

Thank you so much! I tried something similar when I first went to post it, but all I could see was the same hyperlink minus the s.

I am all for depth in the right hip. I’m big on it.

Two points.

1. You’re just putting your right hip there. It’s not a result of pivoting/rotation.

2. It’s happening too early as a result.

Interesting. I developed a nasty shank period before using my "manufactured/artificial" hip depth (lol) with the feel of turning my left hip down on the takeaway. I believe I have trouble establishing both depth and pivoting/rotation in an equal manner, as in when I work on rotation, I get eastern Colorado flat and when I think I feel depth I get my current.

The outside hand path is likely part of the issue.
