grips getting stuck during install

Tanner25

Recommended Posts

My grips keep getting stuck during installation. I have used acetone and golfworks solvent. I use a harbor freight table vice. Not the most solid. But, it should work. I bought the Golfworks tape from Dick's. I am concerned that is was sitting on the shelf for years. Is it possible my problem is due to old tape? Any other suggestions? Thx Tanner

def dont use acetone. wear gloves (helps with grip)put the clubhead in a 5 gallon bucket, plug hole of grip, shake up spirits to coat inside of grip, pour a little out of grip onto tape, rub it around with gloved hand to coat, slide the grip on super easy

Using air is preferable most of the time. However, I have seen issues installing SuperStroke putter grips with air. You have to be very careful not to blow the grip apart and it is sometimes hard to keep the grip from moving around over time (death for putting). I have gone back to tape/solvent on my putter, but everything else is air.

Acetone should never be used for grip installation. Use low odor paint thinner or mineral spirits. And don't use those "Green" varieties either.

There has been previous threads around the golfworks solvent and tape and this exact problem. I just changed the grips on my son's clubs and had issues with the clubs where I used the newer tape.

Yes, I have tangled with a few grips that the compressor doesn't get along with, mostly putter grips. Winn ProX come to mind.

Use a little solvent to help the putter grip slide on, while using the air compressor for installation.

I had used water which will also help.

For those grips that's of soft tips and hard to start with the air compressor, dip the opening in the solvent to help slid on the grip.

You don't need to invest in an air compressor to properly install grips. Just use the proper solvent (mineral spirits is perfect) and LOTS of it. You can't use too much solvent. I use a quality Zep spray bottle from Home Depot filled with mineral spirits. I spray the taped shaft to get it nice and wet, then put the nozzle in the grip and spray 8-10 times. I put my finger over the mouth of the grip and shake the grip around to thoroughly wet the inside of the grip. Then, I take my finger off the hole in the end of the grip and let the solvent run onto the tape again. Then the grips slide right on with no problem whatsoever. You do need to install grips in one continuous motion for best results. Don't stop in the middle of pushing them on. Get them lined up the way you want before installing and slide them on, making sure to get the shaft all the way to the grip cap. You can make fine adjustments to the grips after they are seated on the shaft properly. It couldn't be any easier.

I usually use a shot of Simple Green down the grip, shake the extra out and slide it on.

As noted above, air is great. I've used it for years.

That being said, if you continue to use solvent and tape there are a few keys. Make sure you use a alot of solvent. Put a paint roller tray below the grip to catch excess to reuse. Lots of people don't use enough solvent. Here is a video that shows that tour vans use alot of it!

You don’t need much of a compressor for this. Harbor Freight has them for $39.

Cheap plastic window box planters also make awesome solvent catch pans. I've been using one from Dollar General for many years.

I do have thick shafts (Cleveland HB3 irons) and do put solvent on the tape and within the grip. Maybe, leave solvent in the grip while installing it?

Lamkin Crossline Plus and Lamkin 360's. Shaft is Action UltraLite 65 g, R flex.

Lighter fluid or mineral spirits...put in the grip. Cap both ends with your finger. Swish it around pour and slide. Sounds like the inside of the grip isn’t all getting wet. Never use acetone.

I think the butt diameter of that shaft is 0.600". The Crossline 360s also have an inner diameter of 0.600". I could not find a Crossline Plus on the Lamkin site, but regular Crosslines are 0.580". So the sizing mismatch might have been a contributing factor or not depending on grip. You can put 0.580" grips on 0.600" shaft, but it requires more effort to push the grip on and the grip will feel firmer. More than likely, as others have indicated, liberal use of mineral spirits or solvent (non-acetone) should help. One check you can make is to feel the double-sticky tape after application of the solvent. It should feel very slick/slimy as the solvent partially breaks down the adhesive. If you aren't feeling that then either the adhesive has dried out too much/gone bad or the solvent is poor. Hope this has been helpful and good luck.

Simple green ?

Is that used with the double sided grip tape or with air installation ?

I had never used simple green. Tend to use something that will evaporate within 15 mnutes.

The multi layer grip like Winn ( with a thin rubber underlisting ) or the multi-compound grips (eg. GP New Decade ), and the synthetic material ( Super Grip ) all need a little help with the initial step of putting the opening onto the end of the grip.

I had known a guy whom had always changed his own golf grips, had trouble with the Super grip type of softer material ( put the lips over the shaft and oever stretching it ).

Whenever I've had this problem it's usually one of two things:

1. I didn't shake the grip enough to make sure that all of the inside had solvent on it.

2. I didn't properly wet the all of the tape surface.

I use the SG same way most use solvent, I don't use double sided tape ever. I wrap a layer of plain jane masking tape around the shaft, shoot a little SG in the grip and blow them on with air. Been doing this years, never had a grip come loose or twist after the install.

Interesting. I'd thought the Simple Green would have left a little residue.

I'll give it a try next time.

I always use double sided tape and solvent. An air compressor is nice to have handy as a standby in case the grip gets stuck half way but I never install a grip without double sided tape.

Bramptons solvent is my favorite because it doesn't stink and works well. Mineral spirits works fine as well, but as mentioned not the "green" type.

Can Bramptons solvent be found retail or just on-line?

I put a tee in the little hole of the grip, allows pressure to build up when grip is halfway on and grip slides on easier. Also use lots of non-green mineral spirits as others have mentioned.
