Thanks, brew4eagle and all replies! I put the tee in the little hole, with lots of solvent and it slid right on! Also, when I pulled out the tee, it popped!

Yeah, I should've mentioned that. It'll spray solvent on you when it 'pops'

Np. It's worth it! Thanks, again!

I use air for all my putter grips, but I don't trust it for full swings. Maybe I'm using the wrong tape underneath as mine always slip just a little bit. I can twist the grip and it slips especially on driver shafts. Maybe the butt diameter is thinner or something. Solvent and DS tape is just tried and true. And still easy to remove. Just messier.

I use Golfworks double sided tape and mineral spirits from Home Depot. The only issue I had was when I bought the pre-cut strips of Golfworks tape. I have 6 wraps of masking tape and the solvent would get between the masking tape and the double sided tape causing them to bunch as I was sliding the grip on. I fixed that by using better quality masking tape and getting a full roll of the golfworks tape.

You have to be very careful not to blow the grip apart and it is sometimes hard to keep the grip from moving around over time (death for putting). I have gone back to tape/solvent on my putter, but everything else is air.

Is this an issue specific to the ones with stitching on the back or every one?

I also greatly prefer using air, but I still use mineral spirits to dip the opening of the grip and the air nozzle.

I can't say for sure. I nearly blew apart one of their classic grips so started being extra careful after that. Also started adding multiple layers of masking tape under the grip to keep things from moving, but it wasn't completely successful. The extra tape made sliding the grip on more difficult. Finally punted and went back to DS tape and solvent for my putter grips.

The tape should be an issue, heck you can put a grip on using the old tape that is on there. Typically with Acetone, you have to use a lot of it. The best thing to do is have a reservoir to catch the excess and really make sure the tape is covered. What I do is run my hands on the grip tape after I pour acetone on it to make sure every square inch of it is covered then I place the grip on there. Your description sounds like you are not fully coating the tape. Hope that helps.

These threads pop up every few months, and it seems like golfworks solvent is always involved. If you pause or hesitate with golfworks solvent it can spell trouble. I switched to Bramptons solvent and Intertape two sided tape, and grips have never went on easier. It does take longer to dry than golfworks brand though. I always allow it to sit overnight.

Anyone else surprised at the use of acetone as a grip solvent!

Me and my pal started doing our own last year, we use the golfworks ds tape, and just water for lube, then a bicycle pump with the needle for inflating balls. Get the grip started, slip the needle in, couple of pumps and they just slide right on no problem at all. Leave em overnight and never had an issue. Putter grips just the water and air no tape.

Actually taught my son and his friend how to install new grips yesterday- after putting the golf tee in the hole of grip, shake it up really good and pour excess solvent over the tape to cover it completely. The grips should slide on fairly quickly and easily.

I haven't had issues with my Super Stroke grips splitting. I'd say if you run into an issue, or youre concerned about it, maybe use less air pressure. The only issue I have had with my superstrokes is with the counter core. the end hole is too big for my normal inflation needle. I ended up fashioning something with massive quantities of tape wrapped around the needle and then threaded into the countercore hole. It wasnt idea because air still escaped and made it harder to get the grip on. Still experimenting with this...

I’ve been doing clubs, grips, etc for 25yrs, had many, many correspondences with several well known and not so well known master club builders and have never heard of it. Given the corrosiveness of acetone I would never have even thought of using it as a grip solvent. I have been using naphtha for most of this time

Agree, it's a bad idea to use acetone. It could mess up some grip materials, will remove grip paintfill (if you care), and could dissolve tape residue/adhesive rather then activating it. Mineral spirits is what should be used. Acetone must have been a lost in translation deal.

Golfworks tape and Bramptons solvent for me. I had issues with the Golfworks solvent, as many others have had as well, but Bramptons solvent is excellent.

For me, the air compressor method is fine if I'm testing clubs and want to swap grips back and forth, but I tried it on my gamers and had one slip and that was the end of that. Never again.

I agree. Once i went air compressor there is no going back. There are some grips that need tape and solvent (more for putters) but everything else air compressor. Especially great when I need to change out old grips or when i use an adjustable club and change settings and want to realign the grip.

I had the same experience recently re gripping a couple of wedges. Been doing my own re gripping for years and for the first time the grips sort of got stuck halfway on. Same grips I always use, same buildup, so nothing new. I suspect it may be my grip solvent, its the Brampton HF-100, but I've been working on the same bottle for well over 5 years. Anyone know if grip solvent has a limited shelf life?

About one out of every 20 or so grips I've ever installed has stuck, or tried its best to get stuck, halfway on the shaft. I am pretty sure it only happens when I get insufficiently generous with the solvent, in my case naphtha lighter fluid. As long as the inside of the grip is soaked and the tape is dripping wet with solvent, I don't think I have any problems at all.

I used grip solvent and mineral spirits for a few years until i saw an interview with Mr. Palmer on the golf channel and he explained that he used double sided tape and lighter fluid. I switched to Ronson lighter fluid like he used and have not had a grip stick once... not even Winn grips/putter grips. Definitely do the tee in the hole trick... makes a huge difference. The only time I do not do that is if I want to play the club in a few hours. Using the lighter fluid, it dries QUICK!!!!

Been using this for years. It's how I was taught.

I have tried blue painters tape or masking tape and air also. I have had some grips twist on me. I don't trust it anymore.

For a few years when building up instead of buying midsize I would use blue tape and still put on using lighter fluid. If they didn’t feel right or I wanted to swap they were simple enough to blow off.
