Threads like this (and this forum generally) make me think there is much more of a drinking culture whilst playing in America. Drinking after playing is certainly a thing in the UK, but whilst playing, not so much in my experience.

What is the culture around playing/throwing darts and drinking in the UK?  Because golf, to my mind, is just a more active form of playing darts.  With obviously much more bodily motion.

Personally, I agree with the studies that have shown that most people play darts (and drive! believe it or not) on 0.5 drinks.  Maybe 1.  Enough to remove inhibitions from letting your body do what it knows how to do, if you'd only get out of the way.

Then there are the studies that show, if you learned how to play darts when inebriated, you'd play better drunk than sober...  Obviously this isn't true when performing at a high level (Cf. Doc Ellis throwing a no-hitter tripping on acid), but it does give me at least, room for thought.

Golf is a lot simpler than we (myself included) make it out to be.

True and it would be much simpler if we adhered to the basic (only) rules

Play the ball as it lies

            a) if lost or unplayable, drop with penalty/line of sight

Pay the course as you find it

We make it way to complicated which invites personal interpretations.

1. LIV is the best thing to hit golf in a long long time.

2. Most people including coaches make the golf swing way more complicated than it should be.

3. Loud music on the course sucks.

4. The rule book for golf should be simple and 2 pages at most.

I find it interesting because these two in a way contradict each other as music is heard on most holes at a LIV Golf event.

My home course the traps are rougher than a night in the county jail but IMHO playable. None of the Mens Leagues will play from them and they are a free drop in the shootout. I play out of them in my rounds both vintage and modern. I was playing the other morning and one of the old farts that lives on the course was riding by going to their league play. I had hit it in the trap off the tee on our 13th hole. The nosy old fart asked me if I was playing from there? I told him yep because I hit it there. He informed me that the Mens Groups did not play from there. I basically told him I did not give two hoots if the mens groups farted or blew a tin whistle I hit it there and was playing it from there. I further added their "handicaps" were a scam because of that and they rolling the ball in the rough etc.

Even though there is a chance I may like it, I don't want to hear music on the course.  So if someone brings it up, I tell them I have Andrea Bocelli, and that I love opera music while playing.  I can be fairly certain that those who want to listen to music on the course don't want to hear opera, so when they object I just say well since we can't seem to agree, best we just keep the music off.  Or if you want to put in earbuds, have at it.

I always ask if they can play Beethoven's 7th Symphony, final movement.

You don’t have to be smart, brave, honest, or in any other way virtuous or above the common herd to play good golf, even really good golf.

You can shoot in the 70’s (at least) with a fundamentally unsound, loft adding swing.

You apparently can teach golf for money with a fundamentally unsound, loft adding swing.

Golf learning is hindered by turf protecting by teachers, possibly unconscious or at least unrecognized as such by said teachers, who would lose status and money if everybody could do it.

I was off 28 and have been since i started in 2016; had a club + putter fitting 8 weeks ago, I'm now off 16.

Please don’t take offense to this but at that level…it’s not the clubs helping you.  It’s simply getting better at playing .  28 is not always breaking 100.  16 is not always breaking 90.

Shooting scores like this indicate swing issues…and course mgt issues…not club issues.  And again…please don’t take offense to that.  We’ve all been there myself included.

glad your improving…keep up the great work!

1 is live and I think it’s serving it’s purpose to get the tour to freshen up it’s stale product.

2 is golf instructors make the swing too complicated. This is very true.

there is no contradiction between 1 and 2

I don't think it's too complicated.

If you played for 6 years at 28 before getting fit, what did you do to try to get better?

Played and practiced a lot, watched pretty much every video on youtube, tried course management, attitude/expectation adjustment, tried improving short game to compensate for poor long game, etc. Only getting fit brought down the cap.
