Is the Ryder Cup the biggest event in golf?

Titleist99

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup or any other tournament is your most cherished or must see event.,

I listened to Padraig Harrington talk about the Ryder cup and he said that that (and I'm paraphrasing) the Cup is like a religion in Europe and it means everything to the European Tour...… For me, the Pres. Cup & Ryder Cup is nothing more than glorified exhibitions and while I find them entertaining I could do without them. To me the Masters is the biggest event in golf. What is yours?

I could do without the Pres Cup, it’s not nearly the same thing as the Ryder Cup. I would say Masters is the biggest event, Ryder Cup second for me.

In terms of participation- not sure if the US Open or The Open draws more entries. In the old days, The Oldsmobile Scramble was the largest golf tournament in the world, so the number of entries might not be a good measurement.

The Open - history and played where it all started (on courses that look "right").

The Masters - historic and gorgeous course and we're all familiar with it. And it starts the real season.

RC - love the match play and the crowds. Rarely a dull moment.

US Open - tough as nails, great fields, always worth watching.

PGA - meh.

Every other tourney.

Pres Cup - non factor.

great selections of viewing choices..... guess the Player championship isn't as big as they think....LOL!

Let me ask you this: Does THE OPEN (British) venue difference make it any less appealing? for example: I like all the rotation courses but St. Andrews is more fun to watch for me....

I can't like this enough! 91 at Kiawah......war by the shore? Give me a break......it might resonate with some but it means nothing in the grand scheme of things.....18 or 15 you know how many majors are won but the Jack n Tiger.....without Google search no one knows or cares what their overall records are.....and why is it that the USA needs to play a continent? Give us the Americas ; both North and South!

Eliminate the President's Cup and have the loser of the overblown RC play whomever is left....

Ex) Euro wins rc , Americas play ROTW , that loser sits while Euro plays the winner.....wash, rinse ,repeat....

But on point, Masters, Both Opens, Players then PGA

It may be different for everybody, but the 2 events that I get hyped up the most for are The Masters and the Ryder Cup. I love the other majors, but I'll not wake up at 3am to watch The Open, and certainly not be glued to the tv for every shot like I do the Ryder Cup. Even The Masters I don't dedicate that much attention to, so for me the Ryder Cup it is.

I have tried to get into the Ryder Cup, and just cant seem to get real excited about it. I dont know if its because its match play because I cant seem to get into match play either.

Heres my personal ranking of events:

1. The Masters

2. The Open Championship

3. US Open

4. PGA Championship

5. Ryder Cup

If you look at the populations of the Euro countries that typically send players, it's probably the same or even less than the US. Not like there's many Soviet era, Eastern Bloc nations sending guys ; )

It's a great event, the Euros get crazy pumped, and you get some great situations where the guys can go off and have fun,

The Open venue doesn't make a huge difference, but I want to see a wild and windy links course. Carnoustie, Ballybunion, Muirfield, County Down, ~~Turnberry,~~ Portrush.... and of course the Old Course. Would love to see them play Royal Dornoch, or failing that, get there and play it myself.

My great-great-great (etc.) grandparents emigrated from Scotland in the early 1800s and I think there's just something in my DNA that responds.

The first links course I played here felt like home, even though it was a "fake" links....

Nope, the Masters, Open Championship and US Open are bigger.

1. Masters

2. USGA and R&A Opens

3. PGA/TPC

4. Ryder Cup

I can see why for some Europeans it makes sense for the Ryder Cup to be at the top. It's a source of tour pride and is vital for their tour funding.

For Americans, I can see why the Ryder Cup isn't at the top. Since Tom Watson led the team to its last road win in 1993, the Americans are 3-9. Rooting for the US Ryder Cup team is like rooting for the New York Jets.
