Is the Ryder Cup the biggest event in golf?

I´ve been lucky enough to follow Stenson and Mickelson battle at The Open in Royal Troon and follow action at Carnoustie last year.

 

These great events were not even close to the Ryder Cup in Paris. None of the sporting events I´ve ever witnessed have been close to the Ryder Cup experience. To hear thousands of people chanting "Roooryy" as he was preparing to his opening shot on the last day was simply amazing.

 

After seeing it up close it is easy to believe when players say that the RC pressure and experience is overwhelming. Ryder Cup would top my list easily in golf and would be very high in sports in general.

Loudest or Drunkest ; )

 

If that's the case then here is the biggest event in golf

The Masters all day, everyday - especially Sunday afternoon in the Georgia pines.

I think the RC is for bragging rights and all other tournaments are for keeps. It's great to watch but, a completely different animal than other tournaments. Nothing wrong with that and maybe why it's revered so much?

I think the Ryder has the potential to be the most exciting mattering on match ups and how back and forth it gets. Mix in the bravado in your face antics and it becomes the most fun and then the team aspect makes it the best when there is a perfect storm..... many of us like the patriotic crap talkin between countries not just players

I think this is why it’s so great - it is about playing your best to beat the other side. It’s not about money - these guys are used to playing for money. A poster above wants it to be for $100k/player. No thanks, these guys play for money every week, even if it is their own dough, they are used to playing for cash. Taking them out of their element is what makes it so compelling. The Euros are obviously better at playing golf for the golf, the US side excels when playing for money. The Ryder Cup takes the money away and replaces it with pure competition- give me that over just about anything else please.

 

Adding a money factor of any type puts the US into their comfort zone.

I imagine that making a Ryder Cup Team roster increases a player's endorsement income by a significant amount. That said, I appreciate the sentiment of your post and agree that the Ryder Cup should not pay players an appearance fee.
