What swing advice would you give someone new to the game?

This week, I played with my son who hasn't played in 7 years, at that time he was a beginner too. After seeing him swing straight back and up, I said, no the golf swing is on an arc, swing inside to inside and let the club head swing. If we continued, I'd say, you c0ck your wrists and turn your chest on the backswing. Yesterday, at Golf Galaxy's demo range, I saw a kid attempt to swing, he went at it like a hockey stick. I said, no, your feet stay planted at you let the club swing. What is obvious to a WRXer may not be obvious to a beginner. What swing advice would you give someone new to the game?

I'd have to see their swing, ask them if they wanted my advice, and then hope to the high heavens I could articulate my thoughts in a way that didn't send them on a dark and fruitless path,

 

On second thought, I'd probably just tell them to take a lesson. However, I would have no problem discussing how they address the ball, where they are aimed and what are their intentions.

Pick a few good trusted golfers and "1" instructor and listen to what they say. Most of all though, listen and practice what your instructor advises, and practice some more. Do not get caught up questioning those you've chosen to listen to which is common on DB's.

I would start with helping the golfer understand things that will help him/her control the low point of their swing first and foremost...

For children I would show the a 10-finger grip and let them swing away. I would show them a 'balanced finish' position and use what Earl Woods taught Tiger...swing as hard as you want as long as you come to a balanced finish.

 

With adults, I would show a 10 finger grip and then get more into how to pivot the body and not try to actually 'hit the ball.' Children can't really get the concept of not pulling the arms down right away. Adults can, from my experience.

Even with that threshold I won't give it and know a bunch of folks who do that couldn't explain to anyone else how they should swing a golf club!

LOL, Tanner should know I mean that with love (at least I hope so).
