Mizuno MP-20 combo set, loft question

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Did find some discussions about the topic, but none that gave me the answer, so please help me out.

Got 3-7 HMB and 8-P MB in order, but still able to do some adjustments due to lack of HMB heads being out of stock.

At the fitting I only got to hit 7 irons of both clubs, and I really enjoyed them both. Me and my fitter decided to split the set as mentioned above and he recommended me to keep the lofts stock.

This has been swirling around in my head ever since, as the loft gap between the HMB 7 (32) and MB 8 (38) is 6 degrees.

I have been debating with myself to weaken the 7 HMB from 32 to 33 and/or strengthen the 8 MB from 38 to 37 to keep the gapping "in order". Perhaps only strengthen the MB down to a 5 degree gap so I do not get too much offset on the HMB.

Perhaps someone of you have been in the same predicament with mixing and blending and can offer your experiences.

Thanks!

It’s really comes down to what you like to look at. Do you want less offset, more bounce and more traditional lofts? If so, leave the MBs at standard loft and bend the HMBs weak to give you 4 degree gapping. If you want more distance, less bounce and don’t mind more offset, bend the MBs to match the HMB stock specs. For my game the 4 deg gapping works perfectly. Chris Voshel said himself that 4 deg gapping is the best way to go. The reason they are stronger lofted in the mid irons is for the launch monitor fitting game so people see more distance. Sure I could hit my irons farther but then I’d need to carry 5 wedges.

Great, thanks!

Traditional lofts with less offset is definitely my preference. As I am shallow, more bounce is not my friend, so this makes me consider upping the number of MB irons vs. HMB irons.

Did you hit the 7 MB well? I think it was quite forgiving and that many golfers could split the set there. That said I wouldn’t advise strengthening the lofts as they clubs are already low bounce. If it were a ping then sure, but I already thought the bounce was a bit on the low side. I’d for sure go weak to match the MBs.

Thanks!

Yes, hit it well, but I felt “safer” with the HMB. Think I’ll end up bending HMB 7 to 34, 6 to 30 and 5 to 26, while keeping the 4 at 22 and 3 at 19.

I guess worst case I’ll add more MBs to the set if the mid HMBs won’t “work” and keep the 5, 4, 3.

Good plan. Enjoy - they’re buttery!

After some back and forth I decided on:

7 - P MB

6 - 3 HMB (bent 2 weak)

Now I am crossing my fingers that Mizuno still can do the changes.

Thanks.

The adjustment of the HMBs makes them similar to the more traditional MB lofts, with 21 degree 3 iron.

I’ll change the 3 iron with my G410 hybrid on days without wind. 17 Epic Flash (5w adjusted strong) below that.
