A tournament can be a good test of golf if contested on a difficult setup/challenging layout, but so can a casual round with your buddies.

When I think of tournament golf to me it require a different focus and mind set, Saving every shot possible and posting a score.

Trying to beat a certain number of players....

Which tournament is a better test of golf to you, The Open or The U.S. Open?

I’ve never played either of them, so I can’t say. Scores tend to be lower in the British I believe on average, but I think weather conditions make it tougher at times.

Well, to me that's a whole other test with the weather etc.... everybody plays the same course and a champion is claimed.....

I don’t see the comparison between tournament golf and test of golf.

Tournament golf speaks to an organized event played by a set of rules.

A test of golf pertains to the course and or course design elements. It’s like saying “ I’m getting the term car and tire confused “. Mind you I’m not at all saying it’s a dumb question. I don’t believe there’s any such thing if it’s a genuine question. I’m just saying i don’t understand the comparison.

Because there is no comparison! Wasn't meant to be compared. Two totally different terms....C'mon Man!

Gotcha. Re read it. I see now.

I guess I almost said it anyway.

Test of golf would be the combo of course design your playing , plus equipment . Certain equipment combos being a better test ( in my opinion ).

Tournament golf is simply an organized event or specified length , venue and rules. On my opinion the best form of the game , the form I enjoy the most.

So, when playing tournament golf would you say that it is more of a "golf setup" that will result in the best player coming out on top and the venue is secondary. I mean you can play a 6500 or 7500 course and it wouldn't make a difference as long as every one plays the same course.....

I associate the term "test of golf" with difficulty and who handle the conditions the best.

I'm assuming everyone is playing the same equipment.

Not really.

Different venues will net different types of winners.

A course like Augusta national will always favor the player who can putt those greens. As well as the guy who can place his approaches so that the putts are easiest.

Flip it around to say Bethpage. You’ve got to be on your Driving game to compete there. Long and in the fairway. Keep pounding fairways long and greens and outlast the others.

As far as everyone playing the same equipment. I guess we can say that for a controlled arguments sake. But in the real world that’s not the case either.

I guess I don’t fully see what you’re driving at.

Yes everyone plays the same course. So the best suited player theoretically wins each week. But that player isn’t always the top player. As in some courses handicap length. And some require shortgame skills that some don’t have. So to me the course venue is as much a part as how they set it up.
