Arthritis and grip choice

For a person with arthritis, am I better off with a mid size standard or a plus grip, like MCC+4?

Have you considered Jumbomax. I don't have arthritis but love these grips and could easily see how they would help.

First consideration IMO is shaft vibration. Move to graphite, steelfiber etc if you haven't done so already. I would have given up the game eight years ago if I hadn't switched to steelfiber, including in my wedges. Still using the same soft feel Miura irons and steelfiber shafts I was fit into early 2012. I even went retro to Vokey SM4 sand and lob wedges (with steelfiber installed) last year when I found some new/near new. They seem less harsh and heavy than the SM6 that are now in the closet.

For grips same consideration for vibration dampening. I've been using the GolfPride CP2 grips for several seasons with my basal arthritis. Just the standard size, though these are less tapererd than most standard. I moved from them from midsize VDR that were my choice for a couple of seasons. Before that I used midsize Winn grips. Great absorption but too squishy for me and no longevity.

I LOVE JUMboMax grips. I own seven sets of clubs and have six sets, all my drivers, and woods as well gripped. I used to get massive pain in my hands post rounds and now nothing! It finally feels like there is a proper grip on the club now

There is an adaptation period of maybe ten rounds or equivalent range sessions.

Anyone who says it will effect your ball flight is full of it and have never tried one of these grips. You can hit a duck hook just as easily as a banana slice.

Finaly, if you’re worried about about what people think when they see them the answer is they won’t I haven’t had a single person notice my grips ( I use XL) in over three years

They are expensive so I recommend buying two or three and regrouping your driver 6i and a wedge to test.

Funny and I surely don't care but nobody ever notices mine either. I can imaging how big the XL's are, mine are the medium ultralights. Like you I LOVE LOVE these grips, less hand pressure and more face control at the same time. Could easily help anyone with arthritis issues.

Switched to the Lamkin Sonar grip last year in midsize and love them. Great at dampening the vibration without feeling mushy. One other thing to consider is Pro-Soft inserts for your shafts while you have the grips off during the change. Pretty inexpensive too. They are very similar to the Sensicore inserts that were around for years. I loaded up on the Sensicores when they quit making them and they go into every steel shaft I play. I've used them for over 20 years. Really helps with hand and elbow pain. You may have to experiment with different grips and combinations till you find what works for you. Good Luck!

I have the ultra lite grips but prefer the weight of the tour grips. It is important to keep in mind that the ultra lite grips are normal grip weight but the other models are around 100grams and will effect swing weight. I prefer the feeling though. It counterbalances you’re clubs and makes it feel like you can HAMMER the ball.

I d personally stay away from that grip with arthritis. I was stand Tout Velvet and my arthritis was bothersome. Wentt to Tour Wraps in mid and not really bothersome at all.

I think something that absorbs is the key.

I don't have arthritis but do get pain in my hands from work. The last few years I played Winn midsized dri-tac to jumbo dri-tac.

Half way through last season I put on Winn Excel Jumbo. No taper and a soft grip. Keeps your hand pressure very light.

 

For the Jumbomax guys, how much of a pain in the ass are the grips in the bag? Do you need a tour bag in order to have enough room?

small and medium are ok any bigger and they do become cumbersome. If you have a 14 divider they may not necessarily fit as a lot of bags use strange shaped holes for the clubs. That being said they are a game changer. Holding a normal club feels like holding rebar now.

get a driver and a couple irons regripped to test it out. You’ll love it

I have large hands and cope with arthritis in both but still use standard TV Align on 3-PW and standard CP2 Pro grips on woods & wedges, all +2 wraps and don't choke the grip. As long as I don't grip too tight, those grips are soft to touch yet firm and large enough to allow me to feel the club head at impact and not exacerbate the condition.

To often people grip the club way too tight which exacerbates the condition. Mid-size grips, however, are the typical choice for the condition. I tested MCC plus 4 and thought the surface was too hard and rough. I am such a delicate person... NOT.

The Jumbomax have a great feel to them. I played the Midsize NDMC PLUS 4's for a while before switching, they are definitely hard but never realised it until I swapped. The Winn's were always too soft and of course would never last more than a few months at best. The Jumbomax ( especially the Ultralights ) have a soft but firm ( I know sound stupid ) feel, just right!!!

Those are the grips Bryson D. uses. During my younger years I used standard TV with 4 up and 6 down wraps but never larger. My buddy uses 10 wraps, boy do they feel odd to me. Because I wanted Align I tested MCC Plus4 Align before going with TV Align. Grey look matches my shafts better but they are too firm. I really like the feel of CP2 Pro but with graphite/steel shafts and 620 heads, the combination was too soft so I put them on my driver/3wd and two wedges.

My game is all about feel so even though I have large arthritic hands, I don't foresee midsize, but who knows.
