Anyone know if the new Titliest AVX ball and the EXP-01 ball are one in the same?

No. The new AVX has the same number of dimples (352) as the original per the current USGA conforming ball list. The EXP-01 has 346 dimples. At this point nobody knows what if anything is going to become of the EXP-01 ball.

So the way I'm reading this, the previous version is Low Driver & Medium Wedge spin. The new version is Low Driver & Low Wedge Spin? Or, are there two different AVX offerings for this year?

Hold up. The listing for the ball, which I believe is the new one with "gray wedges" has "L L". The 2nd "L" is "Low wedge spin".

"SPIN RATING The spin rating describes the spin performance of the ball (H-high; M-medium; or L-low) when struck using a driver and a short iron. Example: "L-M" describes a ball with a low spin rate when hit with a driver and a medium spin when struck with a short iron."

This rating contradicts your "extra green side spin". It appears to be "less" greenside.

Why are options for golfers bad? Titleist has 3 tour offering to fit different golfers and 3 other offerings at lower price points for golfers who either think they can’t play a tour level ball, don’t want to pay for tour level ball or some other reason.

Why do car manufactures need multiple car models?

It's quoted above (and also included below). The official USGA Conforming Ball List says the new AVX is a lower spinning ball than the one it replaces off wedges (That's what the 2nd L in "L-L" is, the 1st L being off driver). If this isn't true, then Titleist shuld get their listing fixed in the USGA Conforming Ball List. Marketing is one thing. USGA is another.

On how the testing is done: https://www.usga.org/equipment-standards/research-and-test-center-primer.html

In testing for the USGA Conforming Ball List, the USGA, during their testing, found the new AVX tested such, that it fits in the "low" spin category compared the the "medium" spin of the outgoing ball.

Not sure how more simply I can explain that. The old ball spun more than the new ball, and the new ball spins less than the old ball - according to the USGA and THEIR testing. (Starting to sound like a Monty Python skit)

Titleist says: " INCREASED SPIN + CONTROL The new, thinner urethane cover system gives you more precise control on scoring shots into the green.".

That's marketing. It doesn't say that these shots are from the same distance that the USGA uses. Scoring shots can be 7i-9i. You're simply interprteting as such. I interpret it different.

You don’t have to try to explain any more simply or whether you think what titleist says is marketing or how they tested compared to usga. It doesn’t matter to me, I was just addressing initially the subject of the thread about whether exp-01 and then that there weren’t 2 new versions of the new avx ball which there isn’t.

Titieist redesigned the avx and appears to have addressed the one knock on the avx which was the green side spin. The results for each person will vary here. From the press releases and articles/reviews I’ve read they have kept the same concept of being lower spin and lower flight than the prov1 and Prov1x while improving geeenside spin.

The "spin rating" on the list is not based on any USGA testing, it is simply whatever the OEM lists on the submission form (link below):https://www.usga.org/content/dam/usga/pdf/2019/equipment-standards/RTR4B01-submission-form-ball-3.1.0.pdf

The actual impact testing that the USGA performs is only for the driver to ensure that the submission falls within the maximum initial ball velocity and maximum distance regulations. My recommendation is to just ignore those spin ratings altogether (subjective qualitative descriptors are pretty much useless).

Here are some better references from the USGA:https://www.usga.org/content/dam/usga/pdf/Equipment/2020%20USGA%20Golf%20Ball%20Submission%20Guidelines.pdfhttps://www.usga.org/content/dam/usga/pdf/Equipment/TPX3008-weight-and-size-test-procedures.pdfhttps://www.usga.org/content/dam/usga/pdf/2019/equipment-standards/TPX3007%20Initial%20Velocity%20Test%20Protocol.pdfhttps://www.usga.org/content/dam/usga/pdf/2019/equipment-standards/TPX3006%20Overall%20Distance%20and%20Symmetry%20Test%20Protocol.pdf

From my link:https://www.usga.org/equipment-standards/research-and-test-center-primer.html

Golf Ball Testing

A golf ball manufacturer submits two dozen balls of each model to the USGA for conformance testing. The technical staff conducts the testing of more than 20,000 golf balls per year for conformance using a combination of simple measurements and state-of-the-art testing devices.

Ball performance is tested according to the Overall Distance and Symmetry standards. Up until a few years ago this was accomplished by hitting samples of each type of ball outside onto our test range. As one can imagine, testing outdoors can be tricky as changing temperatures, winds and turf conditions make it difficult to evaluate all balls under the exact same circumstances.Today we still hit each brand of ball with the mechanical golfer, but instead of hitting the balls outside onto the range, we hit them into a net and measure their launch conditions off the clubhead (velocity, direction, and spin). We then use our Indoor Test Range (ITR) to precisely determine how each ball flies. The Indoor Test Range is a 70-foot long "tunnel" through which the balls are launched using a golf ball launcher that is similar to a pitching machine. The ITR allows the USGA to accurately measure the aerodynamics of a golf ball in flight. This information is used in a sophisticated computer program to accurately calculate driving distance of an actual drive. This "virtual" distance data is highly repeatable and not subject to weather variations.

It's not so much "need" as the company chasing profits by feeding the fickle nature of golfers. Watch Titleist since the introduction of four T-series iron sets.

I been playing ProV and ProV1 for years. Not sure I agree with them adding greater spin to AVX. Even though AVX design is different from ProV adding spin IMO will make it too similar to ProV, dividing the market. If the conjecture is true, what then is the goal with AVX? Yesterday, I played 18 holes using a new AVX. Distance was the same as ProV and it spun notically well on smooth 10.5 greens.

Good to see this conversation has been mostly about the new AVX, so this makes 3 threads now discussing the brand new Titleist AVX. No wonder people don't search for topics and just start a new discussion because there's already too many to choose from.

I personally fit into the previous AVX incredibly well, but found the greenside spin to be significantly lacking compared to the ProV1/ProV1x. I'd love to see some hard data on the new ball, and am shocked nobody here (or on youtube or the major review sites we all frequent) has done this considering the ball has hit shelves.

I don't expect the new ball to spin the same around the green as a ProV1/V1x, but if I could get another 400-1000rpm on it compared to what I saw on the first gen, I'm sold. I had no issues holding greens even with long irons, as I am am a high spin player with my irons. I also found it to be longer than the V1 and V1x off the driver, due to it being lower launching and spinning off the driver. I hit driver a tad high and spin it too much, and the launch/spin characteristics of the AVX made it longer despite the lower ball speeds. Overall, I loved the AVX because it was easier to hit long and straight, but the ball just didn't give me the short game spin I really score with, so I went back to the V1/V1x and the BStone BX.

So anyone out there have hard data on the 2020 vs. 2018 AVX yet? Id love to see it.
