Shaft question / advice needed

Hi all

hope this is the right forum and I apologize for the long ramble. I’ll start by saying I’m assuming this is a shaft issue.

background: been playing mp59 with tt dgs300 for years. 6 iron swing speed around 86mph and 190-195 carry. Loved playing this setup but decided to look for a little help on mishits/thin shots, especially with the longer irons. Got fit at club champion...didn’t love the experience. The fitter seemed to be pushing regular flex shaft and lighter weight, even a graphite shaft that produced shots all over the place. I’ve been a mizuno fan and was pretty much going to get the mp20 line.

I decided on mp20 hmb (had good results with 6 iron) with modus 105s. Had the lofts adjusted to standard mp20 blades (same as the mp59s) which were 2 degrees weak...not on all but most.

Im in a snowy winter climate but have spent a few sessions on an indoor trackman. Not good! I’ve lost a ton of distance...my pw was 150yrds...now 125?!? Same loft of 46degrees. I’m also getting a ton of spin...with the high irons...11k at times with the pw. I thought these new irons would be easier to hit and fly straighter, everything leaks right and I’ve lost distance across the entire set. I’ve always been able to play a slight draw if I wanted...these things just go right. A big miss is way right. How can this be? I also feel like I’m over swinging the clubs to get my regular distance...getting my swing speed up to 90mph but no distance increase?!?

At this point, I’m just debating on first switching shafts back to dgs300 and having the lofts adjusted back to the standard hmb specs?? Also going to get on a mizuno shaft Optimizer I guess. Just a bit disappointed as I was expecting pretty much the complete opposite results...of swinging easier, gained distance, less fatigue and increased accuracy with the hmb’s ?

any advice or similar experience would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

I don't know enough about the Modus3 to answer this from a shaft standpoint, but part of the leaking right question can be answered in the weaker lofts. When you bend your irons for loft they do not stay perfectly straight, you slightly open or close the face because the hosel really doesn't move so you are mostly just twisting the toe side of the club for desired effect. So by bending them weaker you are incorporating a bit of side spin that you are not used to having. I've had this same issue with some wedges I bent 2* weak in the past. I'll never bend a club for loft again. Besides this consequence you also change the bounce angle of the club that the sole was designed for and you have slightly dropped the CG. Adding loft and dropping CG will both add backspin. This is essentially the entire premise of Titleist's new T100S irons. They are effectively the same irons as the T100 but 2* stronger without the ill side effects of unwanted sidespin and change in bounce angle. Effectively what TItleist is telling customers here is don't bend clubs 2*, we'll sell you a different set that will work correctly.

I would re check your numbers. Not sure 86mph with a 6 iron gets you that distance?

Are you are basing numbers off an indoor monitor? Or on course?

My 7 iron is 90-92 and I get about 174-175. My six is about 185-190 if I step on it.

I may be off and not trying to argue. Just make sure numbers are accurate before you start blaming and changing equipment. Could be costly.

Agree with the above. 86 MPH is good for about 165 yds, at sea level. If playing at altitude, we could be speaking different numbers. A 125 PW would be pretty close to that number too.

Yep 86 mph 6 iron does not equal 190... sorry, unless your playing super strong lofted irons ?. But i think it was a mistake to bend those hmbs weak. Those cgs are low and meant to launch high. Not to mention it added bounce. Im pretty sure your problem isnt shafts. Need to get some more data on your speeds and then go from there and determine what your real distances should be.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Forgot to mention I do live at altitude...trackman was set at 5000 ft...I typically play above that. When in FL recently, I had 188 to the flag and pulled 4 iron and got the gir. Here’s some data from session.

sounds like first move would be adjust lofts back to the hmb standard. Keep the comments coming y’all

Your first screenshot looks way too blurry, on my phone anyway, to read.

If you really want to find the problem so you dont run into it again, we need to isolate each parameter and try them off.

Get a roll of lead tape, and add the difference of shaft weight to those new shafts. Just set a mark at the middle of the shaft and distribute the lead tape "head to grip direction" on the underside of the shaft, with the middle of the lead tape at the middle of the shaft. Shaft WEIGHT is the most important, and this way we isolate weight vs profile. Next step, bend lofts back to standard....when both is tried and yiu have new numbers in front of you, you will now where to go next. DG shafts is the heavy end, but some players cant go down on shaft weight without some adjustment to total weight like using a heavy grip or insert weight. Its feedback of shaft weight who tells us the angle the shaft got at the top so we know when to turn the club, and too light often leads to "over the top" swing and bad consistency.

Total weight is also a large part of the clubs MOI or actual resistance (tempo and feel), but it also make a difference for swing path and where we make impact, so try added weight on those shafts to see if lower weight was the real issue.

Don't let any fitter tell you what shaft to get if it overrides the feel you’re looking for. You went from a 130 gram shaft to a 105 gram shaft. That’s a crazy difference. Last time I got fit, they kept trying to put me in a 115 gram shafts. I didn’t like the way they affected my timing. Light weight shafts make my backswing way too quick. I lose track of the club, and it messes up my transition timing. I made the executive decision and stuck with the S300. I would have been open to others, but I wanted a shaft that Mizuno offers for free. Every other shaft in a stiff flex is 120 grams or lower. I was close to going with the Modus 120 based on the launch monitor and mat. They let me take it to the range. The launch window was higher than I like to see, and everything was sliding right. I know my game better than some guy who has seen me hit 10 shots off of a mat. I don’t play launch angle, dispersion, or spin. I play golf.

Thanks everyone, this is the feedback I was looking for. Definitely going to adjust lofts back to hmb standards and try the 105s again. Pretty upset at myself for making such a drastic weight change with the shaft...should have at least dropped from s300 down to the 120s (116grams) but being in the mid 40’s and swing slowing down some, thought this was the way to go. Not giving up on them yet...but really thinking of going back to dgs300. Not really concerned with the distances...I can adjust and no ego with carry distance...especially with all the different lofts these days...but can’t have the current constant ball flight out to the right. Thanks again all

AMTs may worth a try as well, depending on how you feel about the full weight in the shorter irons.

  • 3 weeks later...

Small update. Lofts back to std and got on the shaft optimizer without talking about my issues. Best option was modus 105x. 15-20 shots with the 105x waaayyyy better feel for me and 15 yard gain with pretty tight dispersion. Great combo of flex profile and lighter weight. Going to be unloading 105s shafts soon with only 3 indoor sessions on em soon.

very surprised if the different feel between the 105s and 105x.
