Two tour players left PXG Last week, Who's next?

Rocco had a cup of coffee w/PXG as well. IF the story regarding the Tour rep is accurate I guess it just shows how important some of these behind the scenes relationships players have with guys like that are to them.

One of my company's does software development. Over thirty+ years I've seen many Reps at vendors get moved around internally. Biggest reasons is the rep becomes so ingrained with certain customers he/she starts behaving like the tail wagging the dog. As CEO, I can't allow that to happen for internal reasons and the very result you described. Fortunately, we've never had to deal with that problem. Any employer that brings on an employee as you described, is aware of the writing on the wall and smart Execs plan accordingly. Hope it works out for your friend though. Have a good day.

I see that side to an extent. But. He wasn’t giving out product out of the back door. He was simply running it as if it were his. As in service. On time everytime. Knew his inventory , on hands and product knowledge. It’s so rare these days to talk to someone with a Brain , that I would only deal with him. It was literally faster to leave him a message , wait 2 hours for a call back and then receive the order than to try to walk one of the other reps through a sale , ( yes. Me walk them through a sale ) and then wait for it to either arrive late , or not arrive correct , or both. He was that good.

I jive with a person like that really easily , as im the same way. I can answer a question with my work 99.9% right off the top of my head. And if I can’t , I’ll have the answer inside the day and will remember it for next time. Most people nowadays can’t even get an answer correctly , much less give it to you from their own mind. It’s amazing how little we can do anymore.

sorry. Just wanted to clarify. Rant over.

A good rep will eventually threaten the CEO and the hierarchy. It's just the way it is. Sales is a tough business. But in the end, it's the only business.

I understand your point, no problem. I was like that out of school, in a consulting role and always went above and beyond for customers. They loved me. I handled their needs as if it was my company. The problem was the President & Owner saw my developing influence over our largest customer base when I was 24. I saw it too and started dictating but knew I didn't want to remain in that role long-term; that he didn't know. He was concerned I'd go to a competitor with customers. His solution was to offer me a partnership agreement thinking that would be more than sufficient to nail me down, ensure no loss of customers or revenue.

So I bought in became VP & partner at 25yrs old and was given charge of opening multiple offices and building revenue. Worked out great for me/us about five years when I realized the importance of expanding to cover diverse verticals across north America and eventual investment in emerging IT, etc. At thirty I said buy me out and walked. Took me 1-2yrs to build a solid business plan that would attract investors, then founded another company. Within a year we were all over North America party because a surprising number of my old customers followed me. My work ethic is still the same today. The rest is history. Though I am semi-retired, I am still CEO and the company operate in multiple cities around N.A. I founded and built two other companies (software development & marine distribution) as well and eventually sold them off.

Anyhow, the greater point is regardless of the employees actual intent, the more perceived control any customer contact employee has over said customers and revenue stream eventually a responsible manager will grow concerned about that employees customer influence. The other natural consequence is that employee is likey to start dictating this or that to management to protect his customers. When management sees that behavior that's when people get seriously concerned and may make decisions that surprise that employee. The most common is chop up the territory or region, move the employee, or even promote him/her. In other words, protect against the tail (employee) trying to wag the dog (company.) Have a good day.

Yep. I’m not arguing with you. I get what you’re saying. But .

it is a bit counter intuitive to ask your sales staff to treat their customers a bit worse , so they remain loyal. lol. Basically saying “ treat my customers worse please. So you can’t poach them when you leave “. Funny thing was. This guy didn’t steal a single customer. I did it all. Lol. I even tried to get him to open his own shop if I could get 20 accounts to sign on for 2 years before he broke ground. And I could have. He didn’t want the stress. He really was just that content at doing a bang up job for somebody and being home every night on time. He’d have stayed at the first company except the new territory would cause him to have to travel 3 days a week. That was the Hangup.

I guess I’m just old school. Ive never bought from a company. Always from the person. When that person leaves. I’ll follow if I can. Or hunt until I find another persoN to buy from.

Joel Kribel is a NorCal kid from Castlewood CC (same as Paula Creamer and other pros to be). He went to Stanford with Tiger. He won the Western Amateur over Tiger in what was a rare televised college tourney at the time. TW turned Pro shortly after that if I remember right. He was a "can't miss" star to be and I think he was a 4 time NCAA All American who never lived up to what was promised when he became Pro. He did play some on the PGA Tour and other tours but never won on a top level tour. But he was still an excellent Collegiate golfer. I think he played on a Walker Cup team also.

You’d think that. But quirky guys like Billy speak a language that not many understand. And I can tell you from experience it’s tiresome having to explain yourself for every request. When you find the rep who gets it. This all goes away. It then becomes a easy conversation. Instead of a struggle. So no. Not just anyone can carry preferences to the oem. If it were true these reps and club builders wouldn’t have the cult following they do. All of Taylormade couldn’t build tiger a set of irons in 6-8 months. It still took one man from Texas to do that job. And still does now.

Counter-intuitive from a Rep or buyers perspective and ideology. Not until those people are in the Presidents seat having to deal with all the associated issues that a Rep or buyer and other staff don't see or care about, does it get real. You also included "treat customers worse." Why? I never said that and wouldn't, no CEO would want that. Being old school or old has no bearing, cause I am as old school as it gets. To stay in business for as long as my company has it's all about the products and service and P&L.

Who someone buys from should be the one that has the best pricing, customer service and delivers as promised, pretty simple. It's not a marriage but more like being a sugar daddy to a girl-friend. LOL. I am not a sales manager, but the CEO that employees a VP Sales and VP of Procurement, plus Regional account managers to be my face and voice in the field as are the buyers and anyone else that has customer contact. They reinforce and reflect our company's culture in the market place.

Anyhow, we're off topic. Nice chat and play good golf this wk-end.

"Who someone buys from should be the one that has the best pricing, customer service and delivers as promised, pretty simple."

This is the case for some products/services but some can be so complex that the buyer doesn't have the knowledge or expertise in house to really make an internal assessment. So, they are looking to the vendor to craft a solution specific to their needs, assure that customer success is a mantra, and demonstrate the ROI. And all the vendors will do just that, but it very often comes down to the best/most trusted saleperson who gets the deal.

No worries. I think we are mostly agreeing / saying the same. Maybe with the one caveat that you’d like to see salespeople rotates often enough to not have anyone get used to only one person ? And I guess I see that IF.... you assemble a real all star sales staff. Otherwise , you’ll lose just as much business from unhappy customers as you ever could from poaching when 1 sales person leaves.

so yes I’m a perfect world I get that. But I’ve only encountered a completely competent sales team once or twice in my life. It’s usually 1-2 Allstars carrying the load and then a bunch of warm bodies to take up space and be given direction.

Jmho but that company is in serious decline. Remember last year they had to give away a driver to sell irons? I rarely see anyone use their equipment at clubs. And all the major brands are now offering premium and again jmho better products of their own too. I have no reason to hate on PXG I'm just seriously wondering about that company's stability. Yes I know the owner is a billionaire but still he won't lose money consistently without at some point pulling the plug.
