shaft fitting x100

Hey guys, need a little help from the fitting experts. Trying to decide on an iron shaft for my new clubs, I’ve been in winter all season and haven’t swung much but I got on a gc2 simulator recently and was hitting x100 in a 7 iron iblade head, prov1x.

Spin seemed pretty good, was around 7,000 and my swing speed was averaging 90mph with 7 iron. My question is, do you guys think I should go straight in with x100 or SS? The x100 straight in 7 iron felt fine and good numbers just not sure about the longer clubs especially because they are going to be ping blueprint blades. Thanks!

You may find the spin actually drop if you soft step. For some playing a shaft that is too stiff can increase dynamic loft. Either soft stepped or straight in should work fine though. X100 is one of the easier X to load if you compared to C Taper 130x, PX 6.5 etc

Hard and soft stepping x1 is something that should only be done to tweak the feel of the shafts. It's not something that's going to have any significant direct effect on the launch and spin. If there are any changes, they will come from how the change in feel effects the swing, not from the amount of forward bend in the shaft at impact. And that's not a very effective way to try and manage the results.

So basically if you are getting good consistent results and are confident that the feels is good straight in then stick to using them straight in. If you're concerned that they might be a hair on the soft side, then you might consider trying one hard stepped. Or if you're concerned that they might be a bit on the stiff/boardy side of the feel, you might consider soft stepping.

But don't try to use soft/hard stepping as a way to try and tweak the ball flight. That is a very poor way to pick a shaft.

yea, I'm mainly concerned with the longer irons being blades and x100 in them and them feeling too boardy. I'm just a little more cautious on my shaft choice for blades vs cavity back. I'll do some more testing tonight, one shaft that I always hit well is the c taper but doesn't have a good reputation for joint health

I think it makes sense to go straight in and get some on-course feedback before soft-stepping. You'll always have the option

I know you liked the feel and numbers of the X100, but did you try a bunch of other options for fit and feel?

My experience, I played the DG X100 for the past 10 years, but was never fitted for them. I just liked the way they felt and launched over the PX 6.5....., but that was just from eyeballing what I thought was good. By the numbers, the PX 6.5 is better for me. I swing my 7 iron between 95-96 mph, I have a very even tempo and fairly easy transition. I was never on a launch monitor with my irons till recently and found that I was around 7,800 rpm with my 7 iron with a moderately low flight on my Mizuno MP-67s

I went on the Mizuno shaft optimizer and X100 wasn’t even top 8 or so if I remember correctly..... I was more focused on the top 3 honestly. The optimizer recommended the PX 6.5 then C-Taper, followed by the PX 6.5LZ ...... I’m getting older, I’m 43 with back problems and arthritis,(I mention this because you mentioned the C-Taper and not being easy on the joints) I had this very discussion with the Club fitter, So he had me try a Modus 120TX and 120x ...... I loved them, and couldn’t tell the difference between the 120x or Tx honestly. when paired with the MP-20 HMB and my 7 iron spin was just over 7,000, which was great, but I was sold, and I picked the shaft on feel alone, although the numbers didn’t hurt! (I’m sure that it would be over 8,000 in my Mp67’s due to the loft being a full club weaker, but the shaft to head combo worked in the HMB)

If it’s a feel thing for you, then why Soft Step? You said you liked the feel, why change that? It may change the feel that you initially liked.

Have you explored other options with that particular Ping head?

IF the numbers don’t make a difference because they are nominal and you are loving the feel, then stick with it would be my choice if it were mine to make, but if you are looking for something most efficient, and you feel like you can adjust, then I would find the right fit for Dispersion, trajectory, launch, and spin. You may find that the best feeling, may not be most optimum, or you may find that the numbers are good enough, not the best, but not far off, and the feel trumps the nominal number differences.

The PX was optimum for me, I didn’t care for the feel as much as the Modus, or what I had with the DG X100. I liked the C-Taper less than the PX 6.5. The PX 6.5LZ wasn’t bad, but not too much different than my DG X100’s ..... I was sold on the Modus after 1 swing. I liked the feel much more than any shaft I’ve ever hit. I didn’t care much about the numbers, I just tried to hit shots to see how the shaft would perform. I hit low trajectory shots to see if I could keep the ball down, and sweeping cuts, because that’s not natural for me, I play a small draw. Once I saw that these could be done, I was sold.

Happy hunting, enjoy the process!

I decided on c taper for now, I’ve been playing $ taper for a few years and wanted something with stronger flight so I think this will work pretty well. For some reason I always hit c taper very well in fitting heads. I’ve played kbs shafts for the past decade almost, kbs tour for a long time, then $ taper for past 3 years.

I’ve been testing iron shafts whenever I’m trying to find something to switch to and this is what I’ve noticed.

x100: stable shaft that feels heavy. Good feel at impact. Lower boring flight.

modus: I never really got into these for some reason so I don’t have much input.

project x: tip section feels very stable, this is why people say it feels harsh. I think it just feels very stable and accurate. Flight goes up and flattens.

C taper: similar to project x but I get a better feel from the tip section, kbs signature. I hit some long shots with these. Flight is similar to project x, goes up and flattens.

i saw some c tapers in a new set of mp20 mmc at my local store the other day and I’m not sure if they improved the finish a bit but I thought they had a better finish. Had a silver brushed finish that wasn’t quite as matte, the brushed silver was more noticeable. Hopefully my set looks this way too.
