Replacing long irons in my Mizuno's with????

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I pretty much play 2 sets throughout the year. MP-37's 75% of the time, and my MP-60's 25 of the time when the weather is cold and I am not playing often.

I was thinking of getting a 3 and 4 iron and maybe 5 iron replacement. This way I can just play my 37's all year around as I don't have trouble hitting 6-PW blades when my swing is off. Hybrids are out of the question. So I am torn between getting MP Fli-Hi's, MX25's, or MX19 3 and 4 iron. Here is the thing, I only need the help on miss hits, I do not need getting the ball up in the air. However, I am sure most of the irons I mentioned have a lower CG anyway. What do you guys think.

I am just not crazy about the look at address of most hybrids. It took me a while to get my 2 iron out of the bag in place of my 5 wood. I tried going from 2 iron to a hybrid but it did not feel right to me.

You have the MP Fli-Hi's in your selection so I'm assuming those hybrids are atleast under consideration. I like the looks of the Fli-HI's because they look like an iron at address but hit like a hybrid. I have the 2 iron (18*) and it is my go to club anywhere from 215 to 240 depending on the conditions. I would take the time to take those for a test drive at the very least.

I would not categorize the MP Fli-Hi irons as a hybrid, and Mizuno does not either. They are definitely an iron, I wonder where they fit in the forgiveness catogory with MX900 or MX25's...

I'd actually look to the 32's. They are a bit more forgiving on slight mishits and get the ball up a little easier. Not having the face perfectly square won't result in quite as must fade/draw either. Perhaps Mizuno's best all around club.

I have to sets of Mizunos which are in rotation depending on how I feel, MP37's and MP60's. What i would like to do is get some long iron replacements (Not Hybrids) for my 3,4 and maybe 5 iron. Regardless on how I feel I rarely miss hit my 6-PW on my MP-37's, so what I am thinking of doing is getting rid of the MP-60's and getting something more forgiving for the long irons in my MP-37's. When the weather is cold and my swing rhythm is off the MP-60 long irons are not cutting it. So I do not think the MP32's would help being that I would not consider them a forgiving iron.

I would definitely try the MP Fli Hi long irons replacements you mentioned. My Mp Fli Hi 4 iron has a firm place in my bag now! Fantastic clubs for those that need more fogiveness but dont like the look of hybrids.

How does your MP Fli Hi 4 iron feel compared to your MP-60 5 iron? Is the trajectory similar in the Fli hi 4 to the Mp-60 4 iron? Thanks

Actually, hybrid is exactly how Mizuno describes the MP Fli HI and they are designed specificly to replace the 2, 3, & 4 irons without having the traditional hybrid look. Here is there product video calling them the MP Fli-HI hybrid irons.

It does not feel quite as solid. It feels a little hollow, probably because it is! But it does hit on a similar 4 iron trajectory and is very forgiving. I actually thought the chunky look would take a lot of getting used to, but it was fine from the first hit. Also a great option off the tee.

Seems a logical fit. Certainly an MX-25 long iron would look "chunky" in comparison. At least the Fli-Hi has the MP-60 look about it.

Gotta disagree, I've been playing 37's for a bit over a year and have started hitting the 32's a bit. The long irons are certainly more forgiving. I was having a rough day with my 2i through 4i all day, and I finally pulled my buddy's MP32 3-iron and pured it to the green - twice. Went back to my 3iron, go nowhere. I'd at least look at them.

Yes the Mp-32's are more forgiving than the MP-37's. However, I need to replace both MP-60 and Mp37 long irons, as I do not feel any of those are forgiving enough in the long irons on my off days. So I need something more forgiving than the MP60's 3-5 iron is what I should really say.

Anyway I just pulled the trigger on an MP Fli Hi with DGS300. Hopefully this works out, I will post a review after I hit it.

Hard to keep the same look through the set if you're not sure about the MP57s....
And yes they ARE more forgiving enough in the long irons than the 60s...(what I play for a combo set now) to be in my bag, but still retain a "similar" look to the MP60s which I happen to like.
For what it's worth, I used to combo my MP60s with the MX23 4/5 irons which played very nicely.....but the offset difference and sole difference started bugging me....so I switched to the MP57 4/5 iron and am much happier.

I know 7-10% more forgiveness doesn't seem like much, but the same could be said about the MP32 and the MP60...there is a reason the MP60s are in my bag instead.

If it matters, I currently play just off scratch (0.6 index).

I really was not considering the 57's as a long iron replacement but who knows, I will give them a try and see how they work out. You mentioned offset being a concern in the transition from MX to your mp-60, which the 57's has fixed. I would like to know if anyone knows the offset for the MP Fli Hi irons, as I do not think they are listed on the site.

Right now I'm playing TM R7 TP's with a TM Rescue club in the bag, but I hit the MX-900 3-4-5 irons better than any long iron I've ever hit and better than a wide range of hybrids. The kicker for me is the look at address. The hybrid screams "wood" at me and my brain says "sweep". That doesn't work with the hybrids I've tried. I need to remember to hit them like irons even though they don't look like irons. The MX-900's still look enough like irons that my brain doesn't know it plays like a hybrid.

IMHO, hit a bunch of them, you might be surprised which one fits your swing groove. I fell into a TM Rescue club that I can hit on my worst day. It just works for me. Good luck!
