Anyone else think this video is flat out dangerous??

So I found this video on Youtube from James Robinson, who I guess is a teaching pro? Not entirely sure, know his channel is pretty good size. But this video I find myself just shaking my head at. Changing grips without the correct tools and with no regard for basic safety. I really hope no one watches this and tries what he did as it's a ER trip in the making.

Title should have been "How to cut off a finger---and maybe replace a grip too!"

That was dumb, buy a regripping station and a J-blade or just don't do this stuff. He's lucky he didn't start taking chunks out of the shaft and I cannot believe he was able to push that grip on just pushing on the club on the floor. I would feel like i'm about to bend the club or something.

There's a special brand of annoying and usually stupid work for us that do club repair correcting bizarre errors for people that try to do this stuff without the proper tools. There's nothing weirder or more bizarre than that work, couple quick ones that were my favorites. This guy had midsize TV's on his clubs but they seemed HUGE and I couldn't figure out why until I pulled them off and the guy used duct tape as a layering tape. It made them enormous, probably above jumbo sized. Second favorite was telling a guy I couldn't fix, pull or reshaft his clubs after he built them with super glue... Brutal.

I know. If you want to do this half a-- stuff on your own time in your own home, whatever. But to put out a video and advertise this as an expert instructional video is just dumb!!

There's about 20 videos online of popular YouTubers "showing us" how to regrip a club. I'd say 100% of them are awful. MrShortGame used a turkey pan to catch the solvent while at his dining table.

There was nothing in this video that was dangerous. Awkward, yes. Dangerous, no. This is the exact scenario that someone in an apartment might find themselves in (only tool you've got is a knife and a mad lady if you make a mess). If he had practiced it a bit before taping, it might have gone smoother. And I'm sure it was hard to work around a small space with a camera running.

As for the gripping without a vice... There are tons of people that do it without any vice. Check this video out where this Japanese Clubmaker does all of his gripping without. Go to 12:17.

I regripped a lot of clubs in my tiny old apartment before I had a garage with the proper equipment....but I also never made an "instructional" video and put it on YouTube.

Cutting with a straight edge blade on an uneven surface with his fingers millimeters from it. You don't think that's a bad idea in general? I am assuming he has done this before so that even though it looks awkward as hell he still has some practice at it. Now show that to some novice with no experience at it and have them give it a try. What percentage are going to cut themselves? I would guess 1 in 5. Again if you want to do this on your own time then feel free. But don't put out an instructional video tempting others to do the same thing.

You are being overly dramatic. There was minimal risk doing what he was doing (blade fully in control and only about 1/4" of blade exposed and just nipping the edge of the grip). There is more risk in people cutting carrots with a knife.

To be fair, I’ve worked in a golf shop before and have cut myself a few times using the proper equipment. Accidents happen. I’ve also had to make do in apartments with regripping and reshafts. It’s much easier with the proper materials, but still doable if you’re careful.

Have to somewhat agree with Socrates, while not "ideal", not overly "dangerous" if you go slow and have any little bit of common sense when it comes to using a razor knife. Probably the more "dangerous" thing that jumped out to me right away was the storage of the poisonous mineral spirits in a water bottle meant for human consumption with no warning labels of any kind on it.

IMO: Bad instructional video for sure, but the method doesn't seem dangerous.

I use a cut proof glove now while cutting grips off. I've sliced myself pretty good with the hook blade. Of course, I was cutting grips off while watching a football game, so wasn't completely engaged.

How else do you do it when using the 3/4" tape? That's the only way I've ever seen it done using the "narrower" tape. I personally prefer the "wider" tape (believe it's close to 1 3/4"?) and go straight up the shaft starting from slightly above where the grip will end, but I have had to do the spiral wrap when all I've had on hand is the 3/4" tape.

Totally agree here. He was cutting away from and extremities and his body, nothing that bad. And yes, a vice is not necessary if you have some semi-capable hands and the least bit of arm strength. Was this a good "how-to", no, but the bare bones of what you'd need to do this job on the fly, with no real gripping equipment at your disposal. I mean, let's face it, pulling grips and re-installing is pretty simple work if you're not a dandy man...

I would not let this idiot re grip handle bars on a bicycle. His instruction is down right dangerous in so many ways. I am an amateur who regrips myself and I have the necessary tools. And I do it safely. I have grown really attached to 8 fingers and 2 thumbs.

Well at the end of the day, you can certainly regrip a club with a utility knife. Maybe he is taking an unsafe route to that destination, I would have set the club on the bench myself for the cutting, but he seemed to be doing pretty well. So no, I don't think the video is flat-out dangerous.

Agree about the storing poisonous liquids in normal water bottles without any sort of labelling. A big no-no in the home, especially if there are small children around.

There is a lot of space between his methods and a gripping station........I have probably gripped a thousand clubs and never even thought about getting a gripping station.

I grip the same way. I live in an apartment so a set up like I had when I lived in a house is not feasible. Paying attention and handling the blade with care is all you need.

Why didn’t he wet the inside of the grip with solvent? Yeah, I would’ve cut the old grip off with the club laying flat on the table. I don’t have a vice or re-grip station either & I basically do what he does but in my backyard & wearing disposable gloves.
