TXG Bracket results: How fast is the Mavrik!?

I really want to see Matt test the Mavrik against his G410 LST. I feel like his swing was off the day the Cobra beat the Ping (not that it's not also a good club) and the Ping probably would've won 8 or 9 out of 10 matchups and the Cobra just caught the 1 or 2 in that session. But the Mavrik seems to be a hell of a club, especially with his average ball speed over 180 in the finals.

I have standard Mav, coming from G410+. The G410 is about as good as I could get performance wise. Just wanted to try something new. The Mav really surprised me in that it is not a high moi design but it is super consistent and forgiving. Love the shape, and the gloss fade to carbon look. I can’t say for sure if it is any better performance than the ping but it is certainly right there with it. And the sound/feel is very solid and rich, and I just really enjoy hitting it. I sold the ping head but kept the shaft in case ping decides to release something new in a few months. That said, I thought the Mavrik line was going to be just a re-skin of the Rogue, but I was surprised hitting it in the store how much I enjoyed it and had a really good honeymoon round with it outdoors before the shutdown.

As far as other heads go. It was a toss up between Mavrik and SIM Max. I did not like the look of any of the Cobra’s. I do think, in my opinion the Mizuno is the best looking at address. Can’t really go wrong this year, though.

It's quick but it's all about fit. I did not get faster ball speeds with it over my TS3 and it spun quite a bit. LST and TS3 were way better for me but it's a good driver. Don't just assume that your ball speed will go up. Fitting is key and improving your swing will gain you more than any driver change.

Why does everyone want this test to have been done in a way that the driver they like or play was the winner?

This was a test for Matt to put a new driver in the bag for 2020.

He is not putting the Mavrik in the bag because the LST, SIM and Cobra were better.

This was not a test to go tell you what to buy.

I thought he said at the end of the video that he would be putting the Mavrik in the bag once they fine tune the fit.

That is what I am saying, it won the test for him. In the Mavrik vs SIM thread an d mentioned here, everyone claiming a bogus test, or Matt was more accurate with x driver, or he had the wrong shaft in the SIM

The mavrik line is very good. I didn't test the max at all and only hit a few balls with the standard because, like most higher moi heads, I spin it too much. I tested the mavrik sz a bunch when I tested sim and sim max. Mav sz had about 1mph better ballspeed, consistently.

I ended up in regular sim because the numbers were really close to mav sz and i believe in movable weight tech for draw/fade tuning. Mav sz also had 3 balls miss hard left out of about 12-15 where sim and sim max had none. I'm a fader so a hard left miss (or left miss in general) is not good if the miss is somewhat frequent.

I didn't want the test to be done so sim would win. But the test method doesn't match up with the intent of the test.

The test was "which driver is longest and most consistent for optimized strikes". They cherry picked the best strikes for matt to be fit into a driver.

We all fall in love with ballspeed, carry, and total distance. But he was fit I to these drivers for the bracket. You going to tell me that if you tested a driver, found the shaft/head combo that was optimal, and you hit more than half the drives poorly or way offline and you're going to choose that driver? I hit mav sz faster, longer carry, and farther overall than sim and sim max. But 1/4 or 1/5 of the drives I hit were off the map left. I chose to walk away from that driver.

It's not that I wanted sim to win the bracket, I couldn't care less which driver won. But txg is saying matt is going to step on the tee with a driver that is poor more than half the time. Both SIM drivers produced the best combination of distance and accuracy when not cherry picked. No shot from sim max was thrown out...not a single one. It took 14 drives to get the 10 keepers for sim. The final was even worse for mavrik...cobra - 16 drives to get 10 keepers. Mavrik - 26 drives to get 10 keepers. Hope matt scrambles well because he'll be out of play half the time with what we saw in the bracket.

Where did they post how many shots it took to get 10 good ones ? I watched the video and didn’t see anything there.

The driver isn't necessarily poor.... You saw the video where he missed fairway.... How can you blame the driver when he hits the ball 20mm toe side with a face 20deg shut to path?? Misses are a mixture of head design, shaft dynamics and player performance... And they are all interlinked.

Reserve judgements until after they fine tune his fit. Txg is forced to test the way they test because A) time and B) they aren't data scientists or statisticians. If you go get fit almost anywhere... The fitter will toss out your really bad strikes. It's just how it's done.

If you're dying to see more robust data, then go to the 2020 M.g.s. Results.

Everyone is different. While I think they juiced the Mav for the finals and watching him hit it I think it would be rather unplayable in real life conditions it was fit for Matt. Not everyone will get the same results.

Here are mine, not a lot different. Slightly high ball speeds with the sim, and slightly less curve.

I think it’s worth mentioning again. Standard Mavrik is NOT a high MOI design. It’s a non traditional ‘forgiving’ driver that may just work for a lot of people. Also, if the upright lie angle bothers you like Ian said it bothered him, you can get one of the Callaway adapters that have a flat setting.

Everyone wants validation. That is nothing new, but saying people are wanna be staffers or fanboys is a bit of a troll. There is not a single golfer that is not a bit tied to a brand. We are lying to ourselves and others if we do not admit that. Also, is there anyone here that would not want to be a staffer of some kind? Lets be honest here.

This test is more fun than anything else Cause guys want quick fixes, like is it that much harder to go get a fitting and find the perfect driver vs buying and trying several in a season?

I know if I "fit myself" I wouldn't be as consistent as I am now with my driver.

Can't say. They may have neglected to mention it until the lead into the final. Or, they didn't measure before and because of the inconsistency, decided to try and remedy it.

From watching lots of TXG videos, I would say that Matt swings drivers with a heavier head a bit better, so it was a fitting adjustment and a better fit. I think the extreme is standard a few grams heavier than the mav so that also makes them a bit more equal fit. Also, heavier head will almost universally yield higher ball speeds if the contact is good. So, I cannot say for sure but I would speculate that they saw that the Mav had more potential if they added weight to the head and wanted to put on a bit of a show. The even say "we don't care" to pre-answer the questions as to why they did it.

As @getitdaily said, you can see that they needed more swings for qualified shots with the mav. So will there is greater distance it looks like it took either more swing to adjust to. They mention in the video that the allowed for that. So that could explain the higher shot count. Or there were more swings to get the same number of qualified shots.
Only they know for sure. In the end it is a fun video. I like they they used a fairway to hit down.

I'd like to see them back on the range, take 10 straight shots (after say 5 warm ups?) and show us the numbers the driver produces offline and on mishits. That's how I actually play golf, I don't get to throw out the worst drives. I also understand they are showing us what the drivers are capable of (even though they fit MAV to be low low spin and SIM to spin more).

I would wager a guess that this also isn't Matty's game swing. I would think he backs off it a touch while playing to dial in and avoid the big misses. Which again is why if hes going to game this club, there going to re-fit him to it to make it a gameable club. This was just an all out shootout, let er rip, delete the bad ones and see who comes out on top. They say right from the beginning and over and over, this is for fun, its a shootout, its Matty's results, its not prescribing the best club for anyone else. And of course they knew from the outset there was gonna be people griping about this or that, just watch it and enjoy. Then go get fit yourself and play whats best for YOU. The usual.
