Slow swingers (Reg flex) - looking for a high launching shaft

Hello gents.

kind of have a dilemma as I have a really strong grip that I like to play but it can lead to me delofting at impact and or a hooky shot. Hence lower trajectory than I’d like to maximize distance

Ive worked on my angle of attack but still lower than I’d like

I would love to use 12* drivers like the Ping G410, Speedzone Xtreme, EXS 220. In neutral I hit them really straight but too low. If I raise the loft the hard draws come out.

anyone Try a shaft that really provided a noticeable higher launch ?

swing speed for reference is high 80’s low 90’s usually a good drive for me is 200-205 carry and 230 total in good dry conditions

Its not a higher launching shaft you need, but improved ball speed and launch conditions by moving impact on the face, and take care of your face angle issue.

Lets start with the face angle issue, its to closed vs path, thats why the hook comes, and if you play a club where loft is adjustable on the hosel, be aware of that what you adjust there, is only the face angle, (you close it when you want more loft), but to finish that job, you have to rotate the club face back to square, if not, you only closed the face, you did not gain loft. That means you have the potential here to both gain launch from more loft, AND take care of the hook at once, because its a face angle to closed at impact that causes it.

Next is launch itself, its NOT the same all over the face, but can vary about 4* from the bottom to the top of the useful area of the face, and since VCOG is always above the centerline, the hottest part of the face is the upper 1/3 of it (but dont go too high). Your distance tells me you loose some distance vs your club speed, and launch angle alone WANT improve it like you might think it does.

Lets for the sake of example say your 205 yard carry drives was 12* on launch with 3250 spin, that gives 205.4 yards carry

Now look at 14* launch and the same 3250 spin value.....208,3 or a gain of whopping 2.9 yards from a new "high launch shaft"....unless we can improve it further on both ball speed (stabilized in the high end), and a spin value more beneficial for a higher launch angle.

From 90 mph club speed, optimized ball speed should be 135 mph (we can squeeze out a few more mph only), so look at this chart as a reference, and for the sake of example say a shaft MIGHT improve your launch angle by up to 2*...look at the same spin values, choose any you like, and compare the difference if launch is changes with 2*......thats not where distance comes from, its from a combination of max ball speed, good launch and a spin value good for the ball speed and launch angle we got.

When you are done with that, you will know if a new shaft is whats needed and why, and thats might be weight and over all flex, it dont have to be profile, thats mostly a feel matter, only some load and a late release will make a difference to launch from a low to a high launch shaft, and for the same reason be depending on what swing you put on the club, so for launch, LOFT is where we should adjust if weight, feel and dispersion from the shaft is good.

The 2 shafts in the light weight division (sub 60 gram) that have active tips , and for me create a noticeable increase in dynamic launch are the UST Attas 3 and the Helium.... the girl friend has an Exotics XJ1 with the Fuji Air Speeder reg flex that I hit moon balls with , even at a lower loft setting than I play my Cobra F8 and F9.

The Exotics EXS 12° with a stock Fuji Air Speeder should get your launch up into the window you are looking for.....that is assuming the weight is compatible with your tempo....

I’ve tried the helium In the Cobra drivers and didn’t get on well with it at all. No higher and the draw was even worse.

havent Tried the Air Speeder Yet but my local shop has it for the Tour Edge drivers and I currently have an EXS220 12* with Ventus 4t Reg. So I might ask to borrow that shaft once the Covid restrictions lift. Can’t hurt to try it. Although that shaft is like a 9-10 on torque.

Find a Attas 4u even in Stiff these launch high with a pronounced kick at impact. Most say they play way soft to flex...... But it's just the overall characteristics of this shaft

Very familiar with Attas 4U , the firm butt , stiff mid , active tip profile works well with my swing....was my favorite shaft until I found the Fuji Jewel line of ultra premium shafts. For me the Attas 3 produced a higher launch.... I probably have a few more 4Us than what is pictured hiding in my closets....and about half this many Attas 3s....

 

For the record.... Me and the UST Helium did not get along either....

Good stuff here. Lots for me to digest for sure.

in the meantime I picked up a high launch Apollo Shadow FL To mess around with.

for the price it’s a cheap experiment. I can at least rule out if a different shaft makes any difference or not.

Start with Howard's stuff first, if that doesn't work, you'll want to try something stiffer in the butt section and softer in the middle to lower part of the shafts. Accra TZ6 is one of my particular faves for this and has a variety of available weights from 45-75 so you can really dial in your specific feel preferences.
