Usually, the Euro Team is the one that gets slated for having guys that are ranked near to the edge of the 50’s.

I'm sure he was considered. Just one of the issues is who would you play him with? You could never trust is he was going to try, quit or what. It's as much about partnering up as being a good player.

People's opinions are varied about JD. I'll relate a story from the 2004 PGA Championship; I was caddying for my club pro who had qualified and while playing a practice round JD came up from behind us and asked if he could join us. While walking up the fairway JD and "Bruce" were chatting and JD asked Bruce where he was from and questions about his family and that he had friends in the DFW area. When Bruce mentioned that his daughter had a cleft pallate, and he had to get back and get things together for a benefit tournament we were having for his daughter at our club. When JD heard that he reached into his pocket and handed Bruce a wad of bills that he had and said "consider this a start" When Bruce counted up the money after the round, he found that it was almost $5000 in cash that JD had given to him. From that day on while admitting he has issues and a great amount of talent as he still could drive it farther than most and had a great short game (at times) I found he had a good heart and down deep was truly a nice guy so say what you want based on your opinion or hearsay, but my opinion of him is based on this one gesture.....

Certainly takes of JD’s compassion and generosity abound, at the 91 PGA he gave some dough to the family of the man killed by lightning This at a time where he had little to give, and I read a few years ago that the money paid for college for the kids. He is by all accounts a kind man

That said, I wouldn’t take Mother Theresa or Father Damien in my next 4-ball.

Was being on the Ryder Cup considered a big deal in the nineties as it is today?

I think so. Maybe a bit more of a reward for a great season or two, but seemed to mean a lot to all the guys that made it, and the ones that missed it as well.

Certainly a bigger deal to some than in the 70’s. Weiskopf skipped the matches in ‘77 because he would rather hunt sheep.
