I’ll start.

We also have a smaller field, so that’s a consideration.”The U.S. Open field was reduced from 156 to 144 when the move to September was announced, to accommodate the reduced daylight.Traditionally, the top 60 players in the official world golf ranking are exempt into the Open, but don’t expect something as simple as raising that number to the top 75 or 100, Bodenhamer cautioned. “We’re going to be much more nuanced than that,” he said. “We’re going to be looking at what a U.S. Open field has looked like.”Phil Mickelson currently stands 61st in the world ranking, and if he doesn’t climb would need a special exemption into the major in which he has finished second a record six times, including at Winged Foot in 2006. Mickelson said earlier this year that he would decline any special invitation from the USGA, though that was when he expected to have ample opportunities to play his way into the field. Bodenhamer said those special invitations will still be part of the criteria for ’20: “We do have a process we go through to look at potential special exemptions we would extend, and we anticipate doing that again this year.”

I think we should look forward to and appreciate any championship level golf this year, let alone worry about the ordinary state of things in such abnormal times. Certain folks are in/nearing the twilight of their careers, imagine if Phil would win. A year without majors of any kind would really put an asterisk on some things. One year removed from another crack at it could be the difference between a grand slam career and not.

Sensible and understandable idea from the USGA.

 

I as much as anyone want the world to get back to normal but it is not going to be a case of right, it’s X Date lets get back to it. It has to be an incremental process and trying to host qualifiers with people flying in from anywhere and everywhere makes the whole process complicated with the potential for more risk than there needs to be. I am sad for those that won’t get a crack at qualifying but it seems like the USGA are at least going to try and cater for the different groups who would usually make it in there. Regardless, it is still going to a great field on a great course playing for one of the oldest and most historic championships we have.

Which further points out the folly of the handwringing over this not being an "open" tournament this year. The only guys that ever qualify are former Tour pros who've lost status or pros from foreign tours. The idea some guy who's a "+2" club champion is going to qualify and actually do anything is folly.

Even a guy like Matt Parziale, who qualified as the Mid-Am champ and was a mildly interesting story likely wouldn't have qualified if he wasn't exempt by beating other mediocre competition (as far as Tour standards are concerned). Yes, he even made the cut, but without being Mid-Am champ, he probably doesn't make it and never had a chance to win.

This could be the strongest field ever for a US Open. Almost as good as the PGA Championship.

The last player to go through local and sectional qualifying to win the US Open was Orville Moody in 1969. It was his only PGA Tour win.

 

The last year without qualifying was 1924.

I started this thread immediately after seeing the story of the USGA press release. Without seeing the other one, which was nearly simultaneous.

It's fine to have the USO this year without qualifying. It will save a bunch of IG and local wannabe touring pros money that have ZERO chance at qualifying. Adjust to the times and put the winners name on the Trophy.

I don’t want to mischaracterize you, so I’ll put this as a question: if the qualifiers are just so much wasted time/money/attention, then why not just do away with an “open” as our national championship? Permanently...?

Well, uh, yeah. As per my thread title, it wouldn’t be an “open” anymore. So there’s that. That little tradition.

Edit: some may want to claim that “open” status is mantained, by exempting a group of amateurs along with the top tour professionals. Of course, that gets back to the claim(s) made here (not my claims) that change would be good ‘cuz qualifiers don’t have much chance of winning. It also doesn’t much distinguish a revamped “United States Non-Open” from the Masters, which also invites a handful of ams, or the various and sundry tour events where select and are given sponsors’ exemptions.

The US and British Opens are famed as processes , involving local and sectional qualifiers. Without US Open qualifying, “Golf’s Longest Day” does not exist.
