Making Your Own Weighted Club?

Has anyone out there ever made their own (hittable) weighted club similar to a Momentus power hitter? I'm interested in trying it out, and I am a tinkerer, so I thought while it's colder outside, I could make myself a training aid for less than the $160 price tag for the real thing.

I just wanted to know what to take in to consideration when purchasing the appropriate component parts and how to weight it down to make it heavy enough.

 

All i know is that I'd have to shaft it up with steel, but I dont know what flex would be appropriate.

 

I want to make a driver if possible. And i want the head to weigh between 310 and 350 grams, and the shaft to weigh about 200 grams. If I cant make a driver, I'll settle for an iron.

 

So I guess I need to know where to put the weight, and how to get it in there, and any other considerations.

I'm thinking about trying this myself. I have an old, cheap driver head that I would use.

Here is my plan -

First, drill the hosel out into the head, add lead and then fill with foam to keep the lead in place.
Second, add steel shaft filled with something to increase weight, (sand?), pack in place, grip and voila!

I don't know how well it will work, but it's worth a try. In the meantime, I swing a piece of rebar with a grip on it.

I'm 51 and have had a few back and muscle troubles, so I shy away from weighted clubs. On a recent trip to the local golf galaxy I wanted to try Leadbetter's swingsetter, I have a friend that has had success with it. Being fairly knowledgeable about clubs I try to stay away from the bs that is usually offered in heaping amounts at the local shops. Its a rainy day and business is slow and I hear the salesman telling another customer "you can pick 10mph clubhead speed with this thing", to me that was such a bold statement I just discounted it as usual bs. After the customer left I asked if he had a swingsetter opened for demo, he replied "sure, but I don't like it, here's what I like" pointing to the power driver. I picked up the swingsetter and I had to agree with him, it was hype and didn't work very well, and I could see no benefit to my over the top move. The tempo part was really hard to get to work properly. So to pacify the guy I picked up the power driver, wow, you really do have to keep the thing on plane, it does stretch your muscles to a good position, after about 5 swings I handed it back and said "thanks, I'll put it on my xmas list", and proceeded to checkout some of the clubmaking stuff they had. He goes and fires up the launch monitor, grabs a demo driver out of their barrel of demos, hands it to me and says "now, swing this", reluctantly I took the driver and setup, SWOOSH, I swang the thing so fast it almost scared me, the monitor showed a slight draw, after three more swings all the same, straight to slight draw. I was dumbfounded it worked so well.
So I proceeded to check the internet swapshops and found a 275g for $90, I haven't had to time to work with it much, beware you can hurt yourself, but anyway here's how it specs out.
Total weight= 526 grams (thats the 275 model), and if the heads is 275, plus the shaft is supposed to be 200 and with a 50g grip, thats it. It measures 45 inches in length. Most driver heads run 200, so adding less than 3 ounces should be no trouble at the head, an XXX steel shaft will need about another 3 ounces, tip as much as you can to still get the head on and get your length. You might be able to just slide one shaft inside another to reinforce the original shaft, you will not want anything to be able to move around.

Check out this shaft it is hittable and weighs 560 grams. This would probably be the easiest way to do it if you have an old head laying around.

I did end up purchasing the heavy shaft mentioned in the above post, but I also purchased the cheapest driver head from golfsmith as well, only $8. My only concern is that it is made from cast aluminum. Will I break this head with the heavy shaft attached to it?

I'd like to make one that's an iron.

Do you guys think filling a shaft with small lead shot and foam would work, it of course would be a cheap club?

Yesterday i cut the grip off a old 6 iron and using a sturdy pair of scissors, I cut some lead sheeting into lots of little bits.
I then stuffed them down the shaft, added a little padding in the but and regripped.

Its worked really well. The weight feels just right for how I would imagine a weighted should be.

Its not really good for hitting balls though. I spent some time on the range swinging this club several times then hitting some ball with my normal clubs. It really helped with my swing plane i feel, which is what I made it for. Hopefully with time it might also increase my distance.

If you fill a steel shaft with lead, you really shouldn't be hitting balls with it. That is not really safe and the shaft could snap. It would be great for dry swinging, though.

Taking an old driver that I had laying around, I filled the shaft with sand and thew a little lead tape on the head. It works for me.

To change the weight of my putter a local pro suggested I fill the shaft with sand. It really gives me

a more solid hit and better distance control. Is this legal for tournament play?
