Thoughts about Jumbomax grips

Recommended Posts

I played in a tournament with a guy who had them on all his clubs and swore by them. Said he hit them straighter and it helps his sore hands and wrists. I have to say I was impressed by his ball striking. I obtained an S/M Jumbomax grip and put it on a spare driver. I hit it yesterday and I have to say that it was really hard to turn it over. No hooks at all. I Hit it solid but certainly no better than my Epic gamer. Probably not quite as long.

However, my big miss is a big hook. Especially with my longer irons. The idea of eliminating the left side has a lot of appeal to me. I hesitate to take the grips off my p790s to try these out. I have a back up set of Titleist irons with graphite shafts that I never hit quite as well as the p790. I could put the grips on those first but I don't have any way to remove them besides cutting them off. I'd like to try these grips out on some irons but don't know whether to try them on the Titleist irons first or bite the bullet and put them on the p790s and see what happens. Thoughts and suggestions?

I recently installed the Jumbomax lite grips on my irons and after 2 rounds am impressed. My miss is an overdraw and have been hitting much straighter shots and find it easier to play a cut but can still hit a tight draw if I need to. The only downside is I lose a few yards of carry but I was expecting that and am fine with it given the improved consistency.

I've been playing these now for almost a year probably. Playing the Jumbomax Ultralights in XL, one of the best golf moves I have ever done. So much more accurate to me and it just seems like I have way more control of the club face. These along with swapping to the DeChambeau swing have dropped my hcp from a 12 to almost a 6 now. I have actually had 4 members at my club swap to them after letting them try mine.

I ordered a set of Jumbomax Ultralites and installed them on my p790 irons this morning. I have a Jumbomax Tour Series that I installed on my back-up G400 Max. I hit the driver spectacularly and hit the dead center of 13 of 14 fairways. Not quite as long as my Callaway Epic but really solid feeling. The irons were not quite as solid. I hit a lot of apparently solid irons that went very straight but were a bit short. I seem to hit these irons about 10 yards shorter with the Ultralite grips than standard grips. Is that was others are seeing? The Ultralite doesn't feel quite as good as the Tour series. I'm going to put the rest of the Ultralites on my fairway woods and my primary driver tonight and try again tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if the Callaway with the Ultralite feels as good as the G400 Max with the tour series grip.

I am just the opposite, I started out with the Tour series and swapped to the Ultralights. I picked up about 5 - 7 yards through the whole bag as soon as I swapped to the Jumbomax.

Is your ball flight / shape still the same??

I have one of their putter grips on my odyssey vline armlock and it is a game changer. The stock grip that odyssey puts on their armlock putters is horrendous, I have no clue what they were thinking. The jumbomax is 10x better. I just ordered a couple of the ultralights to try on my driver and irons. Big fan of their putter grip.

I spent a couple of hours today hitting balls with the new grips. First, these grips are the real thing. I really like the way I hit the ball with them. The ball goes very straight, there are less mishits and I feel I control the club better at the top of the swing with these grips. Today, I seemed to hit the ball about 5 yards shorter than with standard grips but MUCH less hooking or draw. The Ultralites do change the sound of impact for some reason compared to the Tour series. It is a little higher pitched and tinny to me. This was also true for chipping and pitches. Has anyone else noticed this?

Ping G400 max has Tour series grip on it and my Callaway has an Ultralite. My Callaway is my primary driver. They both have the same shaft and are set at 9 degrees. Based on Trackman I already know that the Callaway is a couple of MPH faster than the Ping so it was not surprising I am longer with the Callaway, however, I seem to hit more absolutely flush drives with the Ping that felt absolutely perfect. I wonder if the sound is the difference. It may also be that the counter-balancing of the heavier Tour series grip is the reason I seem to hit it more totally flush. I also noticed that my elbows, wrists and fingers hurt less than they usually do.

I may buy another Tour Series grip and put it on the Callaway. If it changes the sound and gives me the feel of the Ping, then I may consider switching to the Tour series for rest of the clubs. The only other issue is whether the grips will fit in my Hoofer bag without getting stuck or being destroyed when I pull them out. I know I'll catch some when my friends see these, but if it helps me get into their wallets I don't mind.

Just curious, what size grips did you go with? I have the XL's, and they are to pull out of the bag from time to time and I have a Staff Bag.

Yes, when I put some ultralites on, it made my irons very harsh feeling. The shock was so bad I had to take them off.

I LOVED the way they felt In the hands, and how I hit the ball with them, but the feel on the shot on the ultralites for me was just too much shock for me.

I haven't experienced the 'SHOCK" issue your describing with the Ultralights other than when I blade it or hit it thin but that's with any grip.

As far as playing in the humidity I live in Houston, Tx and you can cut it here with a knife. I also do not play with a glove, no issues with slippage at all.

Well, to be fair they WERE on a set of i500's which have their own sound/feel anyway. But they just made those clubs feel like you bottom grooved it on every shot.

They are a VERY dense foam on the inside. Are the non-ultralights the same type of dense foam?

I've now played several rounds with the Jumbomax grips. I put the Tour series grips on a set of T200 irons with Aerofiber shafts and I like them so much better than the p790 with the Ultralites. They sound and feel much better. Distance is improved. I contacted Jumbomax to see if they have had anyone else complain about the feel of the Ultralite grips and they said no. Feel isn't the strong suit of the p790 irons anyway and others have complained that they feel harsh, thin and clicky even without the large grips. I suspect the Ultraliites made it noticeable for my p790's. I could switch the grips on the p790 irons to the Tours series, but I am so pleased with how the T200's are doing that I feel no need at this time. My elbows continue to like the graphite shafts with the big grips.

This sounds very interesting! I have pretty big hands and even with midsize grips, my fingers are pressing quite sharply into the pad of my thumb (sorry, not a native speaker). I feel like I’m clawing my clubs instead of holding them. I’ve gone from standard size (hook city and joint pain after a round) to midsize Lamkin UTx (better but now feel small again) to Golf Pride Tour Velvet Midsize +4 and LOVE them. But still, they could be bigger. Which JumboMax size do you suggest trying?

Well if I was you I would go with the XL's. I have tried all of them except the extra small and like the XL's so much better than the rest of them. Of course I do hold the club in the palm of my hands and not the fingers. I cam from NDMC Plus 4 grips with 3 wraps of tape underneath them.

I have jumobax xs grips on all my irons and woods and I love them but everytime I use them I get bad forearm pain.  I switched to my backup set for a couple months with no pain then played last weekend and the pain came back.  anyone else have this experience?

I have never experienced any negative results since swapping to Jumbomax 2+ years ago.

Is it possible you're subconsciously holding them a little tighter?

I'm thinking more and more that this might be the case.  I'm finding nothing but ways that it helps with pain.  I'm going to try to focus on keeping the grip lighter next round and see because I love these grips.

My wrist hurt a bit during the first 10 balls I hit at the range with a Jumbomax grip. I gripped it a bit lighter after that and the pain went away. Note, overall, i am not trying to have a super light grip, just needed to not death grip it like I tend to do with standard grips.

Wide diameter grips tend to promote light grip pressure, which for golf swings is a very good thing.

Also, it will not eliminate hooks. I use XL and my miss is still a... Hook.

Can confirm both sentences on my end of things.  So comfortable that it is just stupid.  I have mediums on all clubs except 60, 56, 51, which are large.  I'll probably switch all to large when I restock.

I just put a JMax Ultralite size medium on my driver. It's considerably larger than my Winn Dri-Tac oversize, so if you're coming out of a standard grip you might not want to go with a medium, definitely not a large or XL. The first thing I noticed was how much less grip pressure I needed for the club to feel secure during the swing. That leads to less tension in the arms as well. The second thing I noticed was I hit it straighter. I could still work the ball, but the amount of fade or draw is reduced. That leads to the third effect: I hit it longer. The carry distance isn't much longer, but with the reduced side spin the run out is  a good five yards or more longer, as when it hits it rolls straighter, so it doesn't lose as much distance going sideways. The rest of my set is straighter than the driver, so I'm not going to re-grip them right now, but when they need it come spring I'll probably do them with the JMax Ultralite as well, probably in size small, as even that is 1/4" larger than regular grips and 1/8" larger than my Winn.
