New Irons?

Moving up from r7's
I currently have a set of stiff steel taylormade r7's 3-pw

I don't have an official handicap but I would set it somewhere around 13 and steadily decreasing, I have golf lessons every single weekend and [when weather permits] most days of the week (during summer I'm at the golf course almost every single day)

I really want to move up to something a little more blade like, workable etc. After seeing all those address pictures of blades, the offset and thicker topline of the r7's are becoming quite ugly to me and I would feel better with a thinner smaller clubhead to look down at. I want to keep it relatively forgiving, but as I said, I practice a lot and am willing to work up to something that I can't hit very well yet.

My 8 iron is probably just under 150 for carry and I'm sure by summertime it'll be a solid 150 with a decent swing.

So far I'm thinking of:
Mizuno mp-57
Ping i10
Srixon i-506
Cobra carbon cb

I want to keep the price at or below those irons.. mizuno mp-57's are probably pushing it. but I wouldn't mind going used etc.

also, I'm open to combo sets.

any other suggestions as well as input on those irons?

Ok, since you just said you don't want those while I was typing my response, her's a new list:

Try the Nike Pro Combo OS. They're forged and stil very forgiving. Don't get turned off by the Oversized part, they're still not very big.

Also, the Srixon i701's are forged and forgiving.

If you buy new, one of the best deals out there right now are the Bridgestone J33 CBs. Great set of irons that I would add to your list to try out.

not trying to be rude but i don't think you read my post at all

1. handicap is not the tell all of all aspects of your game. a person with a 10 could be a terrible iron player, but make up for it with a stellar short game and decent skill off the tee. on the other hand, a 18 could be an excellent ball striker but not be able to putt/chip to save his life

2. let me quote myself "I have golf lessons every single weekend and [when weather permits] most days of the week (during summer I'm at the golf course almost every single day)" I practice a fair bit and have lessons every weekend.

3. i'm not bashing the r7's. i like them a lot, however i feel like i'm ready for something more demanding and wanted something more aesthetically pleasing. i'm sure tiger woods could shoot par with some random no name junior set (given he got the chance to play them a couple times, maybe not even)

so full list to consider:
Mizuno mp-57
Ping i10
Srixon i-506
Cobra carbon cb
taylormade r7 tps
nike pro combos (os maybe)
srixon i-701 / tour
macgregor m685
bridgestone j33's

more individual experiences/thoughts/opinions on each set???

Haha... that's not stupid at all. (Well, maybe it is, but whatever....) I was coming from a set of X-18s, and I almost didn't want to get the X-20 Tours I wound up getting, just because I thought they looked too similar.

pro combos seem to have 2 votes
r7 tps 1
i-701's 3
j33's 1
i-10's 1
x-20 tours 1
and m685 1

i-701's seem to be getting the most love so far. i've never tried any srixon stuff but i'll definitely be looking into these. how are the forgiveness of the regular and the tour version vs. my r7's?

I tried the R7 TP's while looking for a replacement for my I5's and I like them very much but did not get nearly as much distance as the I5's. (this may have been due to the Penley Stealth 80 graphite shafts though). I thought they might be longer than the I5's but they were not. Bought them off ebay as I do most clubs so a demo w/ those shafts was not an option.

Anyways, the I-701's w/ Aldila NV85 shafts are easily as long as the I5's. All 3 of the sets I just mentioned are pretty forgiving. The 701's I think are more forgiving especially when it comes to distance on offcenter hits. Based on my experience the sole of the 701's are better out of the rough than both but the Ping's are no slouch in this category either. The main reason I went away from the I5's was for more feel, which I the 701's have (plus I'm a ho). So I can't really compare to the regular R7's but compared to the TP's the 701's are more forgiving but with good feel and excellent workability. IMO

I'm in a similar boat to you. I have a set of R7 irons and have been thinking about getting a new set of irons, something with a bit less offset and thinner topline, more of a 'players' club. Since the middle of this season, I took my time and tried out a bunch of different sets and narrowed it down to a few sets, mainly the CCi forged and MP-60's. I was hoping to buy used in order to save a bunch of money. I figured I'd get a set sometime this next year, but came across CCi forged for a great deal and jumped on them this past week.. I'm not saying you'll like these, but hitting these just felt really good for me. Just my opinion.

I've been through so many sets lately, I think you should hear me out:
1st - Mizuno MP-33's - great set, but you aren't going to like them because they aren't very forgiving
2nd - Taylormade CB TP 2005's - excellent set, in my top 5 sets of all time, they can be found used in good shape for under 400
3rd - R7 TP's - really not all that impressed, semi workable, not that great of feel compared to the 2005 TP's
4th - TM MB TP's(07) - excellent, very soft, but you have to be a really good ball striker, they expose flaws quickly
5th - Titleist 670 forged - probably out of the question, very hard to hit I felt
AND
6th - My personal favorite and current gamers - Titleist 695 CB's - These things are awesome, very forgiving, workable, feel pretty solid, more clicky than the TM forged, but just perform very well. If I were you I would look into getting a set of them slightly used.

I have done the same thing that you are talking about although I kept the game improvement irons R7's to have for a bad streak or just something different to switch to. I am a 13 handicap as well but I strike irons really well so I had no trouble switching to more of a players iron. The thing that I really like is the way they line up especially with your 8 iron through pitch. I went with the Titleist 755's and really like them because they are still very forgiving and easy to hit since they are a slight cavity back. Another nice thing about these types of irons is that poor swings or off center hits do not go that far where with the R7's if you put a nasty swing on a 7 iron it could still go 160 yards long but 30 yards to the left or right.

I do not think a lot of people play these but Nickent 3DX pro irons. I chose them over x-20 tours, r7tps, and mp-57s. They may not be forged but my god are these soft when you hit it dead center. Surprisingly for player's cavity backs they are VERY forgiving and you can work the ball. Best of all can be had for 300-400 new, 200-250 used. Great irons.

As you may know I have the non-tour 701's w/ Aldila NV85 shafts. I really like these clubs but something just didn't feel right though, I wasn't always sure what kind of swing I was going to but on ball every time. I thought it was probably just my swing because the 701's were still producing good shots except for the occasional bad swing (or so I thought). I really wanted to try them w/ Black Gold stiff shafts. What a huge difference! I reshafted my 6 iron w/ a BG stiff +1" w/ Tour Velvet midsize grip. It's like a completely different club. With the BG shaft the dispersion rate was ridiculous. And the feel was so much more solid w/ a lower more boring trajectory. Now, I added 1" to the 6 iron but the control and dispersion was better than the 7 iron w/ the NV shaft. My swing speed is not that high at 85-90 w/ a 6 iron. It was just silly how much better the 6 iron was than the NV 5 iron. At 1/2" longer I would expect the distance to be about the same which it was but the 6 was slightly longer and way more accurate. I tried several times to convince myself graphite shafts would improve my game but for me they did not. Now I'm going to shaft the rest w/ BG's and not look back. If you're thinking of these clubs I highly recommend giving the Black Golds a try.

thanks for all the advice so far. I'm actually leaning towards s-58's. i talked to my golf teacher and he said that those are nice and wouldn't be out of my range and also he could hook me up with them for a bit cheaper. I'm obviously going to try as many of these other clubs as i can before i make my decision though. Any idea on about how much i can expect to get for my r7's? i bought them around july of this year and they are probably around an 8.5 conservative condition wise. (steel shafts)

No probs. Sorry missed the lessons bit, but I wasn't just being glib about getting a handicap- in that if you are actually out there competing, even if its just a club day or a bet for a few bucks/ balls/ beers with friends, its often a lot tougher than just hitting practice balls. Thats what I meant about finding out what level your at. No mulligans, or gimmes, count them all and sign the card.

I know a few will claim they play this way or know someone like this, but for fear of getting flamed, I don't know one 10 that cant hit an iron- even to get to a 10 you generally must be able to hit most shots pretty well and consistency or concentration is often the issue. For that matter I dont know too many 18s that are let down solely by their putting or chipping- sure I have seen the odd one that can blast the ball a mile (often not onto the same golf course) and not have much else of a game; or the older player on an 18 who was a better player because of a lack of distance. At the end of the day the handicap is the measure of how we play this game competitively ,at least at an amateur/ everyday level.

Check out the threads on here about the number of sets of i10s already on the market, but you don't see too many G10s for sale. Its all about people wanting Players clubs, but then find them too tuff to hit, but there are scratch or low single digits on here gaming G10s. There are even plenty with Raptors, Fusions and the odd BB on here shooting low.

Just trying to help out and offer a counter view.

If you are considering the MP 57 and think they are at the top of your price range, look at the MP 60s. The difference in the cavity (and therefore forgiveness) is really slight, maybe 1/8" more cavity. If you are looking for more blade like performance, then whatever slight foregiveness you pick up with the 57s isn't necessary for you. And you can find them cheaper on ebay...
