Compass Golf putters

Recommended Posts

Picture of the Scotty was what I sent him as an overall model — for finish, milling pattern, and paint fill color. His torching left the putter a dark brown without any chromatic effect, and he said he couldn’t use green paintfill because it just looked black against the dark brown background. The bumper milling/stamping wasn’t done as ordered either.

Overall, still a cool putter. But as I said before, waaayyy off in appearance/specs, and waaayyy later than what was promised. I really hope I can work with him in the future to really nail this down because the potential is there!!IMG_9465.jpeg.c20fd343968e7f8300ade867317aad99.jpegIMG_9469.jpeg.f71943f2d380975b6bcd96efb558b8af.jpegIMG_9468.jpeg.5ab5ec297f325dbd2f0c02a7074d49cc.jpegIMG_9467.jpeg.85c4c03ed2f329ff0ccb8c48f3ceecbb.jpegIMG_9466.jpegIMG_9464.jpeg.5450a65452ed938c6c9b79db1b0631e1.jpegIMG_9374.jpeg.befa9110dd38ee8c6ba30aaf03225ab7.jpegIMG_9376.jpeg.1ef4319dc1beacd285ca3b2633d5aad5.jpeg

Not trying to defend Compass here but you'll see this a lot, people will post Scotty's asking for the finish to be recreated and people cannot for whatever reason. Plus the 009 would darken over time but more polishing and attention to the heat and could achieve that finish.

It's a nice putter but like you said not 100% what you wanted and when you get a custom you are expecting 100% what you asked for within reason. Hopefully he'll make it right.

His forte isn't communicating, that's for sure.

I think he's great if you want to buy one of his already designed options with very basic customizing. He is not Byron Morgan, and his pricing reflects that.

Not defending his poor comms, bc it's frustrating as all hell, but I think expectations from the buying end need to be tempered. You're able to get a  custom Newport style putter for 1/3 or better the price from the bigger companies and tbh some of them take forever, too. Remember, you pick 3 - quality, cheap, fast.

I think the main problem wasn't just his lack of communication though. In hindsight, it was more the unclear promises when first sending over the design. He assured me everything I asked for would be simple and said he had done it all before. And he isn't "cheap" anymore. He quoted me $725 for the putter above, yet he didn't deliver the putter he promised would be "simple to create, no problem, I'll nail it 100%!!"

I would've gladly taken 2/3 of what you mentioned above, but he wasn't fast or cheap...quality is there, but does that even matter if the product delivered is completely different from what I ordered? I think I was an exception though. I would've been fine with compromising on fast, and I obviously agreed to the price, but I only did that because he promised he could do the job. This was a lot of money, regardless of how deep your pockets are, for a putter that's not the agreed-upon milling pattern, weight, length, finish, or paintfill.

Regardless, I was just wondering if he was gone for good (or at least closed as far as we understand--I was hoping someone on here personally knows him). I want him to try again and fix the putter, but I think I just need to move on.

If you paid him via PayPal g&s, tell him youre going to open a case unless he makes it right then. If it's that far off, then you should get your money back or a new one. I have two putters from him and I had zero issues so I'm a bit surprised to hear he got it completely wrong. His stuff must be very in demand because a few years ago I got my Timeless clone for $375. My last one was $500, and that was earlier this year... maybe he gave me a discount for repeated business 🤷‍♂️

Just saw that. Tempted to jump on this, but with the recent feedback from customers in here I am hesitant

Just know what to expect when you go in and be extremely clear with him what you expectations are; send him sketches, pics of examples you like already, etc.

He is bad at emailing... Don't bother pestering him for updates. Ask up front the delivery date and then as that date is approaching I'd send one "check in". My experience has been (two putters) he'll send you one update and then a putter will just appear on your doorstep one day.

I saw he posted on Instagram and is up and running again. I just wanted to say that after a couple of months with the putter, it's BY FAR the best thing I've ever had in my bag.

I would recommend him to anybody with a few expectations:

1. Assume it's going to take waaayyy longer than he says, and be happily surprised when it comes earlier than you thought. This is probably a good motto for many things in life haha. Now is probably a great time to order, and just assume you'll have it by next April (although there's no way it would actually take that long).

2. Send one final email with everything written down/clearly laid out in a PDF with pictures before you send payment, and don't expect any changes afterward.

3. Try to ask him to recreate something similar to what he's already done (with a few small tweaks like sight lines, paint fill color, text, etc.).

I think a lot of my disappointment came because I asked him to try something different than what he's comfortable with/did in the past. He was overconfident, assuring me it would be easy, and it led to a headache for both of us.

If you are looking for the best performance for the price, I would say that Compass Golf/Mike Gay is at the top of my list. I don't think he's the best custom putter maker out there because he's not quite there when it comes to creating something that's truly custom (like a new head shape), but for a phenomenal performing putter you don't need to look anywhere else. Despite the rough experience I had, the putter flat-out rocks. It bugs me almost every time I look at it knowing that it's not what I asked for, but the feel/data doesn't lie, and I'm putting better than I ever have.

He seems like a good dude who just got caught up with some "life stuff" this past summer, and I just happened to order at a bad time. Please don't read anything I wrote previously and assume he's trying to cheat people or anything like that. He offered to redo my putter once things got up and going again, so I might reach back out to him and throw in a hefty tip since his putter won me some extra money over the past few weeks.

I sort of disagree with this…my first putter with him was a single bend shaft with angled welded connection he didn’t really do before and I switch the night before he started and he nailed it

The putter was great

the second time was when I had all the issues

but again if I was in the market I’d try him again

Yeah, I am a single data point and would tell everyone to take any advice from me with a grain of salt haha.  I'm glad he's handled "off-menu" requests well in the past. That's sort of why I said that bit at the end of my post about me probably just buying from him at the wrong time. Hopefully, we can keep the thread alive and see some more of his work in the coming months!!

I got lucky and got one from a member that fit everything I wanted. I had some stamping done and I love mine. I get the itch and get new putters but since I’ve gotten this putter I haven’t looked at another. Fit and feel is perfect for me and his work is top notch.

It was a post on his story that expired within 24 hours. Reach out to him! He will get back to you through email (maybe Instagram DM too).

Thanks.  I don’t use IG at all.

I did reach out to him and we were conversing and paid for one of his stock builds.  Had a question about the flange line to him and he hasn’t replied back in 2 weeks.  Given his history, I’m not concerned, I was just curious.  Glad he is building again.  Impressed with his work and wanted to start with a stock build, looking at a custom in the future.

Gotcha. I'm a little bit confused how you saw his last post on IG was back in June if you don't use IG at all...but I guess that's neither here nor there haha

My comment referred to my novice use of IG and I didn't realize a post could be made and then disappear.  I obviously joined IG to message him and that is how I saw his prior posts.  I still haven't heard back from him through email or an additional message on IG I sent last week.  I'll give him one more chance before I file a claim on Paypal, it is very concerning his website is gone.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to at this point.  So disappointing.  Honestly don't get it, from all our back and forth he seemed to be completely legit.  He said he had some stock Atwoods already made, not sure what happened?!?  Reading through the thread again, I see he can go weeks without communicating and he never quoted me a timeframe.  This was one of my questions to him that has gone unanswered.
