Headphones in a match?

This has been answered admirably by others but my answer would be....if they are trying to skirt a music ban by making a phone call and ASKING to be put on hold to hear Barry Manilow type music they deserve to be penalized.

So, you don’t want a complete ban, but one based in part on the player’s intention.  Which is what we have, and that which I defend.

To me, aka imo, what I stated is similar to the premise earlier(or was it a separate thread?) about inadvertent music listening that referenced music heard in a backyard adjacent to the course. If you are playing your own music it is a penalty but if there is music overheard it is not. Although I am certain you will think of another example sawgrass! ?

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the skill set which a player must have to play competitive golf.

“For playing while listening to detrimental music (I love that group) I award you a 1 stroke subtraction.”

Challenge accepted.

I turn on my “transistor radio,” (anyone remember those stunning technological marvels?) in order to hear a weather report, but the station that first comes on has a Roy Orbison song playing. I guess I inadvertently heard my own music.  Alas, the 2021 rules provide me with no direction, so I walk off the course humming Pretty Woman.

Nah, you said it yourself. Inadvertent.  As long as he changed stations immediately. And who tunes a radio to hear the weather these days? Use the app on your phone for chryin’ ’ out loud!

This whole conversation is like the old pornography definition question. I don’t know how to define it but sure know it when I see it. Maybe we in the US should just build ourselves a time machine and go back to where our UK and Euro brethren play golf. They do not seem to have this issue.

Another way could be learning some social skills and manners and not to listen to any music during a round of golf. After all, golf is supposed to be a social sport.

or, you could let people be and play the way they want.  If they want to disappear and de-stress for 4 hours, who are you to say how they have to do that?

But, maybe not during a competition.  During a casual round folks can do what they want as long as it doesn't impact others.

All I am saying is that around here it is considered rude to isolate from the group. Maybe that is the reason why nobody listens to music when playing with other people.

I believe Sawgrass has the relevant interpretation in regards to audio/video. There are massive tv boards at PGA events. In some cases, a player on a par 3 tee can watch the TV broadcast of the group ahead of him on the green. He can watch the break of putts, see wind speed and direction etc. He didn’t put the TV board there, but he can certainly use it and benefit from it. It’s ambient. It’s not anything like a spectator behind a green walking up to the player and saying his putt breaks right for everyone he’s watched all day.

And yes, there are people here in the US that play music out loud during competitions. The ruling bodies have knuckled under and the player no longer even has to bother to ask if he can play music. It’s legal, unless a committee prohibits it. Even when it used to be illegal, if I reported it, I never found a committee that enforced the previous rule. They basically shrugged their collective shoulders and said, “What can you do?”

3 years ago in my club championship I had a guy ask me if I minded if he played some music. I said, I do mind, but it’s also illegal. As of the 2019 rules, they don’t even have to ask anymore. They can just play music, and then the onus is on me to ask them to turn it off.

At least now I can ask them to wear headphones.

I believe from the discussion throughout you could ask any player to stop playing their music because you are benefitting from the sound - it is improving your tempo. Music issue solved.

The whole point of headphones for many is so you don't have to interact with others. Particularly those who like to tell you what to do and how to act.

I have no objection to anyone wearing headphones, unless they are distracted and not aware of where they are, when it's time to hit, etc.

Then that is something affecting others and I'm not shy to say so.

I respect your opinion, but in the end, that’s all it is, and opinion.  It’s not “how” we all have to play.  There are guys I’ve been paired with that wouldn’t shut up. I mean how many times can I listen to “oh....prom date” On lip outs before I want to put headphones on?  Lol

but back to the original OP, I’ve never heard of a penalty being called on anyone for music, so I think this is all hypothetical.

OMG. So a player IS allowed to wear headphones as long as he’s doing it “for the right reasons”. That is, because he likes music. If he’s doing it to block distractions, including hearing someone yell FoRE, or if he’s listening because it calms him, relaxes him, or helps him with his tempo, then it’s illegal.

The USGA/RNA really botched that rule

hello , im a teen thats starting to play tournament in golf however i often get anxiety with other people and cant calm down during my tournament. I suddenly dont know how to do my shots because of how anxious i get and due to this when the tournament ends I’ll cry . I dont want to disappoint my mom or anyone that has been supporting me and ive been super stressed about everything. I dont know how to calm down so i wanted to ask a question if i can maybe wear an wireless earbuds one in one out or idk to help me calm down my nerves . .this has been my second tournament where i cried about how my anxiousness gets the best of me during my tournament when i know i can do it .

Your question is can I listen during a round to audio via earbuds to calm myself down?

The USGA has ruled that would breach Rule 4.3 as it is comparable to "eliminating distractions" - see rule 4.3a(4). First offence general penalty, subsequent breach DQ.

I am sure this does not help you immediately but I can assure you that once you stop worrying what others think about you and your game you will feel much more relaxed. Go out there to enjoy YOURSELF instead of trying to please others.

Just take this advice: nobody plays well in tournaments. Being anxious about it, and emotional about poor play afterward, isn’t going to help anything.

It’s time to rid yourself of self-defeating behaviors. OWN that you are nervous and anxious. EXPECT that you won’t play well. If you address your anxiousness beforehand, you’ll have less stress. Your nerves and stress come from the feeling that you won’t live up to expectations. Your own and others.

So flip the script. This isn’t heart surgery. It’s not life and death. It’s golf. We all suck at it. Lower your expectations. If you expect to fail, you won’t be surprised when you do. When you succeed, it’ll be even sweeter.

If you expect to succeed, you’ll almost always come up short and be constantly disappointed. Look at the handicap system. You’re only going to shoot net par or better about 1/5 times. If you expect to shoot net par each time out, 4/5 times you’re going to fall short of those expectations. When you expect to succeed, you don’t enjoy success because it was expected, and you don’t meet that expectation a LOT of the time. There is only downside.

On the other hand, once you realize that we all suck at golf, and your parents are going to love you no matter what you shoot, and you expect to fail, each time you succeed it’s amazing. You’ve overcome your expectations. There is only upside.

In short, I doubt music is the way to go. Addressing your fears head-on is the correct path. Read some mental game books by Dr. Bob Rotella, and expect to fail, and you’ll be well on your way to playing stress-free golf in tournaments.

“Listening because it keeps you calm” would in my opinion fall under the forbidden category.

Rules aside, the calming effect could backfire. One really old PGA pro described how taking quaaludes (depressants) knocked him off the tour in the 1970s. Terrible side affect: the pills made him too calm.

If he got a bogie during a round, it didn't bother him. And, he started skipping pre-round warm-ups because it was too much trouble. And, he started missing cuts left and right.
