Chamblee's defense of his career.

I don't always agree with Chamblee views, but I definitely respect his opinions and views on golf because he is very qualified to be a golf analyst and critique the PGA pros. I just find it amusing that many people say he was a hack and shouldn't be critiquing the PGA pros. He definitely argues his case with a great amateur and PGA career in this podcast.  Three-time All-American at Texas, made 370 PGA Tour starts, won the Greater Vancouver Open (beat Payne Stewart by 3 strokes), 4 times runner-up, 64 top 25s, and career earnings over $4 million. https://golf.com/news/brandel-chamblee-comical-discredit-playing-career/

I think a lot of people here wish they had Brandel’s golf career, and his TV career.

As he states he was never at the level of a Tiger or Jack, but that doesn’t disqualify him having an informed opinion. If you have a different opinion that’s fine. But to say his opinions are invalid because his playing career did not achieve a high enough level is intellectually lazy.

it's his sense of entitlement and arrogance that's diabolically "ch"ambolic

Sorry, disagree. He is controversial and pot stirring, which frequently involves taking contrary positions for the sake of it, not because it is "like it is", as he can often be wrong.

I like a Chamblee. And he is correct in his response to the criticism about his career. He played at the elite level. More than 99.99% of golfers can say.

His playing career neither disqualifies nor qualifies him to his current career. Both the worst and best of sports commentators have come from the playing ranks. Some are hopelessly misinformed and do nothing more than perpetuate myth and too often factually incorrect information - baseball has been filled with them (e.g. Schilling, Morgan). Others are amazingly good at it - see Tony Romo. I don't think it's any secret that sometimes the best pro athletes are good at what they do despite their lack of intellectual curiosity and rigor about their own sport.

I think Chamblee is a professional pot-stirrer, with occasional tendencies towards being a true gadfly. Sometimes he has the data to back up his claims, other times it seems he's just making stuff up and disguising it as good, analytical, data-based research. Not the very worst, but definitely irritating at times.

Agreed. I just take issue when people hold up that entertainment as some beacon of truth or "tellin' it like it is".

I don’t think Brandel says anything to stir the pot. He speaks his mind , that’s all. Some of the pros get bent out of shape but he does his research and can back it up. He is very analytical when going over details.

He was talented enough to win a PGA Tour event and that’s a lot of talent. Not like some of players but that still takes a boat load of talent.

Why are we talking about Brandel?

He's got a job to do, and he does it. He has certain ideas about the golf swing, which can be proved to be wrong by all of the idiosyncratic swings that make it.

Why are we talking about Brandel? Not worth the oxygen in the room.

I agree as far as playing success not setting the bar for actual insight required for commentary and analysis.

But Brandels insight into his sport compared to BBs ? It’s like comparing Einstein to Bryson DeChambeau in Physics ; )

The thing with Brandel is.

Hes only right 50% of the time

But he’s annoying 100% of the time ; )

I think Brandel has had a good career, and it is worth noticing, not everyone makes it to the show. His comments on tv, are genuine. Like how his comments get a rise out of people. Shows he is doing his job.

It seems that Chamblee knows that to make the most of the career that he has now, he has to having guys like us discussing him on boards like this.

If it is possible to create a “buzz” when it comes to golf analysis, he is doing it. In doing that, he is never going to win any popularity contests and he will always been pissing someone off but by doing that he is going to get the guys in the Saturday morning fourball saying “did you see what Brandel said about...” That does exactly what he needs it to do and that is keeping him in a job. The ridiculous comments are the things that keep him relevant and he knows that. He is a tabloid newspaper. Find an angle and then go and find the stats to help him back it up, not the other way round. To my mind, some of the takes that he comes away with are absolutely ridiculous. At times, I genuinely question whether he actually believes what he is saying. That said, if you approach what he is saying with the view that he is trying to bring the “sensationalism” then it as lot easier not to get upset, angry or annoyed at what he is saying.

All of that said, one thing that does annoy me is his insistence on using extravagant language to get his point across. He definitely uses it to make himself seem smarter than he actually is. It seems at times that he has swallowed of thesaurus but doesn’t really know what the word he is using actually means.
