I agree in that Fair Oaks is not on the same tier as previously discussed clubs but their tracks are fun and every time I have been there they have been in good shape, just busy compared to the previously mentioned courses.

Another option would be to look into the new Driftwood Golf and Ranch Club. Must own property there but it will be an elite level type club. While not as secluded as it once was, it will feel secluded enough and still be 30 minutes to DT Austin, 1.25 hrs to DT San Antonio and 20-30 minutes to San Marcos. Also Salt Lick will be your neighbor.

Is Driftwood complete yet?  I was thinking they were just breaking ground but those pics would say otherwise.

I read somewhere that Driftwood was sodding the course now. But have not confirmed myself

of course, it would not be a forum thread if we did not digress...my biggest problem with Fair Oaks is that it has a tiny range with limited flight range balls.  Of course, if you are not a psychopath about golf like I am, that probably won't matter. 🙂

I definitely am not a pyschopath about golf, but limited flight range balls is a bit of a downer

Late to the thread.
Out of your list, Summit Rock is my favorite.  It’s great and probably my favorite Jack course in the state.
Cordillera is very good too. Another Jack track.
Boot Ranch would be my pick for awesome every day course and general vibe.  The big putting green is ridiculous.
Escondido is probably the best conditioned course in TX day in and out, and is a very good Fazio.

Thinking about moving out to HIll Country and interested in joining a private club. I am from out of state, and figure its a great place to meet people. I am actually going to stay at Cordillera for a couple of days, and then stay in Horseshoe Bay for a couple. Any thoughts on the quality of courses, how they are run etc. from anyone who has played at any of these courses or who are members? This is my first trip out there, so I am going to attempt to see as much as possible. Thank you in advance.

I haven't seen anybody mention Barton Creek but you should check it out.  They have four courses, two Fazio, a Palmer, and a Crenshaw.  I think the initiation is $130,000.

Just returned from my trip, thank you for all of the input in this forum and for some guys for reaching out to me in messages.  My thoughts on the places I visited, and keep in mind, I also factored in living at these places in addition to the quality of the golf.

1) Cordillera- Golf course was fantastic, tranquil,  I absolutely loved the course and the community.  I can definitely see myself here.  If there are any members of the course here, I would like to talk to you about your experiences there, building, the Master Golf membership etc.

2) HSB, if I were to go here, definitely would have to be a member at Summit.  The courses do look great and pricing is reasonable.  I would probably have to build a house on the Summit, the real estate in some of the other courses look a bit tired.

3) Escondido- Gorgeous Course, looked to be impeccably maintained.  The bad news is that the monthly dues are quite expensive compared to the other places I looked at.  I couldn't justify that.

4) Comanche Trace- The course looked damn nice, but the living situation was not right.  Place was not gated, when you entered there was some very cheap housing, followed by some tract homes and then you got to the custom builds.  Strange to have that mix of housing.

5) Barton at Lakeside- only got to see a bit of the course, facilities are dated, but it sounds like some major updating is on the horizon.  Dues and initiation fee for that course only seemed reasonably priced (much below the above).  With its proximity to Lakecliff, it seemed to make financial sense to be a member at both, which would leave you a significantly less initial payment as compared to the other clubs and a monthly amount in the same ballpark.

6) Boot Ranch-unfortunately they were booked for tours, but the price of real state there has gotten very prohibitive (that's an understatement).

How far out in the Hill Country are you interested in?   And why?  If your goal is to join a CC that has Hill Country terrain, you could also look at some clubs closer to Austin.  For example, ACC is in town and has wonderful hills.  Also, Barton Creek is in town with four hill country courses.  Both are $130,000 or more so that might be an issue.

I did not realize you could join Barton Creek Lakeside as a stand alone.  What did they tell you initiation/dues would be?  I love the lakeside course.

So an update, I am supposed to close on a property in Cordillera on Wednesday (and yes, I have already paid for the golf membership)....

Lakeside was very reasonable, can't remember how much, but I think 35k at most to join and maybe 600/mo?  I remember thinking I could join lakecliff (i think that is the course a couple of miles down the road) as well and pay considerably less in initial fee and probably around the same in monthly fees as I would with the entire Barton Creek package.

One drive through the Austin area (even the really nice parts) reminded me too much of the bay area with traffic and population.  I wanted something a bit more remote.

That’s a good comparison. Austin is the landlocked, hot San Francisco. 🤮

Is there any way to play Summit Rock while staying at the HSB resort? We're booked to play Apple Rock and Ram Rock, and would gladly substitute Summit for Apple if there's a way. Thanks.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a junior executive type membership in the austin area? I am 27 and would obviously love to play at a course like Spanish Oaks or Austin Golf Club, but don't know if those types of clubs would offer that tier of membership. I spoke with River Place County Club and they were running a junior executive membership at $7500 with $400/month dues. This sounds like a fantastic deal but I would be willing to pay more to level up. Any recs?
