Even irons hit short and right of the pin (below the ridge) were releasing into the back bunker. Not being able to hold a green with a short iron shot from a tee peg is a problem. With the water short, there was no option other than to land it on the green and watch it bounce over.

I never saw much of the later in the day coverage but saw a good chunk of the morning play via PGA Tour Live on Sky and I am all for the setup. Was it playing tough? Yes. Was it playing too tough? Definitely not.

 

I get that these guys are going to get longer and longer and longer and good on Bryson for putting the work in to become a beast but seeing him hit it 423 off the first was just absurd. If the course played the way that it did last week, he could have bludgeoned it (if he could sort his wedges out anyway) but as it was +1 was about what he deserved on a tough track where often enough it seemed that he was too close to be able to put any proper spin on the ball and keep it close to the hole.

 

I genuinely don’t understand why more setups don’t copy what they did yesterday.

The back to back weeks at Muirfield Village with two completely different course set-ups speaks highly of what the PGA Tour can do to limit distance and scoring. Not sure if it was designed this way to silence the "roll it back" crowd, but they have certainly sent a message that the PGA Tour is in complete control. Distance isn't going away unless the PGA Tour says so.

I like that the tour (or whoever) is showing how course conditioning can impact play/scoring. I would love to see more variety in course setups over the course of the tour schedule. There has to be a range of setups - from bomb and gouge friendly to U.S. Open tough and variations in between. How about long rough and soft greens, for instance? I think it would be cool to see greater variety like this. It would offer a more complete test of golf and we would get a more diverse competitive field.

You nailed it!.....The PGATOUR sells distance, just watch any commercial on their telecast and the tours partner in crime telecast The Golf Channel. The tour cringe when they hear the word "Rollback". Amazing how the degree of difficulty goes up when they grow the grass and cut off the water....put in a couple of well placed trees and who knows what might happen.....LOL!

That hole isn't fair. Bad design, Jack said on the telecast he was going to redesign the green so it would hold. 8 irons were traveling 210 yards total.....silly. Jack knows he effed up on the design of that green.

Are people seriously complaining about the course set up? Some of you have gotten SOFT. This is a fair test of golf, Finau shot -6 today, it rewarded good play. God forbid you get punished for missing the fairway or green. The US Open should 100% consult Jack on how to set up courses. Wouldn't hurt if the asked him to pick the venues as well.... USGA is LOST

As others have said, it's not like that par 3 didn't have a bailout area. Was it slightly unfair, yea, but it wasn't anything egregious. People also seem to be missing that it appeared to be basically straight down wind of a 20-25mph steady wind. Not to mention, people are using ONE hole to try to make the case about the set-up. One hole that was admittedly, slightly messed up.

Best way to combat "bomb and gouge" IMO....as long as not US Open stupid as far as being crusty, make the rough actually penal and you have the great equalizer.

That is a great point. And anyone who doesn't understand that they can roll back equipment and length will still be a big part of the game, is missing the fact that length is relative among the players, and also relative to course set up and course length.

Yes. And mow the fairways wider and dry them out too so the drives run out and potentially into the rough, but the rough then stops the ball farther off the intended line. Also get the fairway running into the traps. No need for rough collars around them. Fairway bunkers should be connected to the fairway and they should collect shots.

...or the pros have forgotten how to hit a knock down shot with the wind behind. Hammering an 8-iron high into the sky with the wind behind is a recipe for disaster. They need to play more links golf to understand how to play in the wind, hole is fine it’s the shots that are wrong.

I doubt the PGA Tour needs an education about course set up. In fact, I bet they know more about distance than the USGA.

Good point. I posted elsewhere that many believe it's a human right to just aim at the pin all day. Sometimes the best course management is aiming away from the pin.
