Tiger hitting it 320 in the 1990s was almost like someone hitting 380 now. He was hitting sand wedges into par 5s at the Masters in 1997 and averaged 320 off the tee with that old equipment.

I’m not really sure the two are comparable. Bryson missed the cut today, so while everyone can retweet the video of him driving the ball 425 On Thursday, there won’t be anything available from him tomorrow or Sunday.

Tiger wasn’t doing anything crazy back then. He was just that good. Bryson is absolutely smashing the ball right now, But until the rest of his game shows up to consistently match it, the long drives aren’t going to win him anything.

At the end of the day, it’s just something for the talking heads to discuss. And honestly, even if he hits his approach to 20 feet, it’s still fun to watch.

Tiger hit it 320 with a driver smaller than Bryson’s 3 wood. Bryson would not be swinging like he does with a driver that small because the misses would be too penalizing.

Driver tech has largely taken the skill out of driving at the top level. It’s generally the easiest shot to hit now for pros. There was a time when it was one of the more nerve racking shots.

They changed Augusta partly because of this, Tiger was averaging 323 yards a drive in 1997. The most amazing part of this is that 323 would've led the 2019 field by 8 yards.

If it’s easier to hit a ball today for pros, then that naturally makes it tougher to win today as so many players are bunched closer together with less opportunity to seperate.

If you go back and watch footage, you’ll see Tiger was hitting 320 aided on many hard & fast course conditions / setups, plus he was one of few that went after it back then, the golfing-belief was very much fairways & greens compared to today.

Also not sure Spieth would agree that Driver Tech makes it easier to hit a ball today. DJ’s been spraying it, Brooks, McDowell, Matsuyama & Tiger to name just a few. Even JT missed key fairways last week in his play-off despite using his 3 wood. He put a poor swing on those 3 woods and got a poor result as a consequence. A poor swing still gets poor result today.

Add in todays players increased aggressiveness off the tee as distance is now a known key advantage, players have naturally increased the risks of hitting wayward by chasing this greater distance. It’s all same same but different. 

The talent of players today would naturally adjust to any tech of any era, if not better.
