3 Hybrid without the long shaft and excess distance

I've just a bought a Mizuno JPX FliHi 4 hybrid. I love it because it's the same length as the Mizuno 4 iron it replaces and hits it the same distance, but easier and with much more control.

Mizuno don't seem to do a similar 3 iron replacement. Is there anything out there I should look at?

you could buy it, and butt trim the shaft and add head weight and voila

I've gone on to buy shafts and then tip accordingly (slightly higher head weight, slight increase in tipping), but not necessarily necessary.

I doubt you'll find anything anymore that's stock the same length as the equiv iron. Just like drivers, hybrids keep getting longer and longer. All my hybrids I cut down 1" to 1.5" - and they are still longer than the irons they "replace".

I've tried butt tipping hybrids in the past without much success. I may have to get a club builder to do it. Quite interested in G410/CLK/Rogue hybrids.

When you shortened the club, did you do anything to the head weight to compensate for the shorter playing length?

I calculated the swingweight without dismantling the club and added lead tape to the head. However, it didn't work. Taking an inch off the shaft meant that far too much lead tape was required. I don't have access to any other way of changing the swingweight. I know I need another way of adding swingweight which is why I'd be happier going to an expert.

How do you define "Too much lead tape"? There's always a way to find room for more. It may not look great but it's usually only needed for testing and finding the right head weight. A more permanent solution is always possible once you get the weight dialed in. Tip weights are probably the easiest although some hybrid heads can be hot melted.

FYI, that's not how you need to adjust head weight. Not with calculations or even a swing weight scale. The only truly effective way to do it is by feel. Go to the range and add it incrementally to the head, usually about 2 gm at a time.

But that's only going to work if the shaft weight is already close to a good fit. The stock shaft weights in hybrids seem to be getting lighter and lighter these days.

Now if you don't like the idea of having to make the effort, I can certainly understand it. And there is nothing wrong with that as it certainly can take a bit of effort to make it work. But that's different than saying the approach wont work.

With my Epic hybrid I was able to buy a heavier weight to help offset a 1" shortening. On the Rogue 3H, no removable weight but there is a nice channel in the center that you can put a few pieces of high density 1/2: tape in where it won't easily be scraped away. I also trimmed 1" from that shaft.

 

OTTOMH there is a port on the Rogue to allow someone to hot melt it but the tape method should still be used to get it to a point you feel good about.

 

All advice already covered by Stuart, just chiming in on the Rogue since I have tinkered with that one :)
