Bandon as Single

Interested in making a trip out to bandon probably shoulder season February to April or November?  How far in advance should I be looking to book as a single who is pretty flexible on actual dates?

EDIT: I'M BOOKED!

Here is my itinerary lets here your thoughts / recommendations.  Still some of the non core gaps that need filled in.

Saturday: Fly into Portland landing 9:30 PM, rent car, sleep somewhere near airport

Sunday: Explore Portland maybe play a round.  Stay somewhere in Portland TBD.  Open to recommendations for golf / food / places to stay

Monday: Drive to Bandon maybe play a round somewhere between Portland and Bandon.  Stay the night in town (waitlist for resort) probably the Inn at Old Town.  Again open to recommendations for this day.  Think I could get away with using the range at Bandon this day?

Tuesday:  Pacific / Bandon, stay on site

Wednesday: Sheep Ranch / Pacific, stay on site

Thursday: Old Mac / Trails , stay on site

Friday: Sheep Ranch, depart and drive back towards Portland.  Sleep somewhere.

Saturday: Return flight from Portland

Fellow single here also! I'm making my first trip to Bandon in about 3 weeks and am counting down the days.

I know it's tough to judge with covid any everything, but I booked my trip back in June; was shooting for early September but the first availability (on lodging) was in the middle of the month, so I booked! Mind you I am going in "peak season", so there may be better availability with the months you mentioned. I grabbed a Golf Single at the Lodge and put my name on a waiting list for the Inn.

Like the poster above, nothing wrong with calling now and getting something booked then rescheduling/cancelling later, if needed. I've called them about 10 times since I made my booking and the ladies in Reservations couldn't be any nicer or more helpful in getting me squared away.

Good luck!

I played a round in June there and our forecaddie said he is able to play when there is a 30 minute gap in tee times and that he is able to play pretty much any day he wants on at least one of the courses. If you don't care about staying on the property, you could always get a hotel and start calling the course 21 days ahead asking to get on. I realize this isn't a game everyone is willing to take though.

Bandon's issue is not enough lodging availability. With 5 courses plus the preserve, getting a tee time isn't difficult.  I was able to book 6 nights stay in September.  I got lucky to be able to get that since I called only a couple months ago.

Nice score there! Enjoy the rounds in golfers heaven!

How about on Sunday drive south of Portland and play a round on your way to a town on the coast.  I know Langdon just south of Portland works logistically.  Morning round there, then I'd drive to Florence and stay the night there, play Florence Golf Links Monday morning, then another hour and a half to Bandon.  Monday afternoon can easily be occupied with the range/shorty's at the resort.

That sounds like a good option. Also considering flying in Friday with my girlfriend. She would stay till Sunday or Monday. Any good wineries in the area?

Best thing to do when in Portland is to go (and stay) in Carlton.  It is a small town with 20+ tasting rooms in 1.5 square miles.

If you really want to impress the girlfriend, go stay here: https://www.bellacollinabnb.com/ and have them set you up with a wine tasting tour.  The folks there will set you up with some awesome mix of wineries and a private driver.

Otherwise, there are plenty of awesome wineries....note, Oregon is about Pinot Noirs - but there are plenty of other wines being made.  I have a wine that is made in Newberg.   Speaking of Newberg, that is a great place to stay and make as a base to hit tasting rooms as well.    If you go, Rosmarino Osteria is phenomenal.  There is great chocolate store there. Painted Lady is one of the best restaurants, but super pricey.

puttn's got some good suggestions above.  You can't swing a cat in that part of the Willamette Valley without hitting a good winery or tasting room.

I like the Sokol Blosser and Stoller wineries for the view, vibe and wines.  Both just off of 99W south of Dundee.  They are both really nice places to spend an afternoon.  Grab a couple bottles to take to Bandon.

I'm a Domaine Drouhin and Domaine Serene guy!   Really like Cristom, Grochau, Keeler is a great place, Beaux Freres, Purple Cow, Joe Dobbes (biased as that is where my wine is made).

The range is wide open and unregulated. Just go to an open station and fire away. Also play around on Shorties, the mini course right next to the range.

If the wife is NOT with you I would drive down to Florence on Sun morning and play Florence Golf Links. It’s a fun course that will get you on a sand based course that isn’t a pure links course. From there I would either stay in Florence or drive the hour and a half to Bandon for the night.

Monday I would look at Bandon Crossing, a cool muni and you are supporting the local community, plus there is a good chance you can/will play with and meet some caddies. In the afternoon I would head to the range at Bandon for a good hour and a half/ 2 hours, I believe Shorty’s is closed Mondays then play the Preserve followed by some drinks at the Punchbowl.

I like to stay in town at the Bandon Inn, the walking path out the back puts you out at the Arcade (a caddy owned/caddy bar) plus you are within walking distance of all the downtown restaurants. Personally I’m a big fan of the Broken Anchor (I believe) and the Bandon Brewing Company

Bandon has already been good for my fitness. I live in the Houston area, normally I workout inside in the summer and run a lot outside in the fall / winter to beat the heat.  Covid has led to me avoiding the gym but I've started running again, got to be ready for 7 rounds in 4 days walking in potential bandon conditions.

I'm in Houston too! Had a trip scheduled to Bandon on Tuesday but pushed it back to the end of the month.

Yeah I've been reading your thread. Can't wait for a trip report. I think you made the right call pushing it back.

Such a tough decision...but after speaking with a couple people in Reservations, I am confident it was the right one.

When is your trip? Your schedule looks great! Make sure to get a round in on the Preserve...my wife doesn't golf, but I got her a putter so she can have some fun on PunchBowl.

Dude, you have no idea how much fun you're about to have. Best decision of my life to take this trip (went in June 20'). I had almost the exact itinerary you have (including traveling to Portland / staying in town of Bandon), so offering up a few suggestions:

1. I know you are probably trying to keep your budget from exploding, but if your girlfriend doesn't come along, f*** exploring / playing in Portland. Do it on another trip. Stay in Eugene the night of arrival and then take one of the most glorious drives you'll ever take to Bandon that next morning.

2. I stayed at the Inn one night. Clean / cheap accommodations, but as seems like you're doing, keep an eye out for openings at the Resort. You'll see why when you get there, but there is something about the place that relaxes you / makes life easy. It is soooo worth any extra money spent.

3. Activities you can do without teeing it up at one of the six courses (although you'll feel the tug to do so as soon as you get there) include: 18 at Bandon Crossings, Preserve, Shorties, Range (the main or the tucked away one at Sheep Ranch), just walking around the place.

4. Don't fret too much about your tee time itinerary. As a single it is super easy to get on any of the courses and rearrange your schedule as needed. I had almost the exact same schedule as you to start, but ended up playing Bandon Trails 3x and Pacific / Bandon 2x.

5. A few additional tips:

-Take time to really appreciate that first day there. I got so excited that it took me 9 holes just to settle down and relax lol.

-Your legs to start that third day of 36 no matter how fit you are will be barking something terrible. Just power through! Most enjoyable pain ever.

-Start practicing your shallow angle, low spin punch shots and bunt drives now and get those two shots on a dead string.

-If you take that day on the range, spend a disproportionate amount on the above shots, bunker play, and lag putting

Above all, have fun man!
