Titleist U-500 vs. U-510

Recommended Posts

For the Titleist guys out there. Tough to find, even to try, so bit of a guess. Trying to decide between these two. Thinking of swapping out my current U-65, (although, I have no idea why). Seems to be quite a variance between the u500 and u510. Wish they had something right in between these two. I'm leaning towards the 510, but it does seem a little clunky. Conversely, the 500 looks difficult to hit.

I swapped out my t100 4 iron for a U500. I find the U500 a lot easier to hit. Launches pretty good too. Looks great

I just got the u510 2i with a PX Evenflow White 90g 6.5....should be here Thursday, but I ordered after hitting a u510 4i that I found in the used bin at a local shop. It's big and chunky, and exactly what I'm looking for to replace the hybrid in my bag. The u500 is slimmer, but by no means did it look/feel hard to hit in my opinion.

I don't know what your handicap is. I'm about a 13, but pretty long, and I was hitting the u510 4i about 220-230 on the sim. If you have the U-65, the U-500 is definitely not more difficult looking to hit. It's just a more sleek 510 with a slimmer sole, but it's not like the T-MB when compared to the 510.

I don't think there's a market for anything between these 2 models, and once in-hand, I think you'd likely agree. There's really not enough "room" between the two.

If you're concerned about something looking too chunky, the 500 is probably your stick. If that doesn't matter and you want hot/fast face and easy to get off the ground, the 510 is for you. I just joined a country club here near the house and there's probably 8-9 par 4s where driver isn't the play, and I don't feel comfortable with fairway wood from the tee, so I plan to hit this u510 2iron at least 8 times a round, and potentially more. Primarily a tee club for me, but I have no doubt it'll get off the turf with ease.

Hope that helps. Will check back in once my actual iron arrives and I get some range/course time with it. Big key for me is that I need it to be anti-hook. I was hitting high fades in the sim. Hoping reality matches expectations.

I have a U510 2 iron - It was bought (90%) specifically for opening Par 4's. Due to time and my back I generally do not warm up when I play, so this is a club that I can start my round with and not kill it on my first swing.

Club is hot and forgiving.

@Duffner's Waggle posting about a utility iron instead of a fairway wood? Man, what a long, strange trip it’s been this year??

Personally, have a strong dislike for offset (hence the 962b irons in my bag) yet could play either model w/o much issue- just found that u500 performs more consistently for my delivery and is a bit easier to vary trajectories. Peak height was quite a bit higher with the u510 off deck, your results may vary.

I have the U510 1 iron, which I bought after hitting the U500 3 iron and U510 3 iron (they didn't have a 1 available for demo). It's a bit different to the U500's and much more clunky, but it's not so bad if I think of it as a hybrid replacement rather than an iron replacement. I don't like the stock HZRDS Smoke shaft - something like two thirds of my shots miss right, and I don't think it's just me causing that. I might get an EvenFlow White to match the driver shaft.

There is a bit of a gap between the U510 1 iron and T100 3 iron in the bag, but it's a gap I haven't yet found the need to fill. If I did, I'd ditch a wedge and get a U500 3 iron.

I think it comes down to what you use your U65 for most often. If it is a club off the tee, I would go U510. It is my no means the prettiest but as a launcher off the tee, it ticks all the boxes. If it is something that you are looking to use of the fairway more, I would fo U500. It’s not as forgiving as it’s chunkier brother but for me, with the narrower sole, it is better through the turf.

Thanks guys, all of these replies have helped. As for choosing, I'm now leaning towards the u500. Some might feel that the U-65 is a little busy looking, but when you frame the ball, it looks great. Very versatile, as I use it at appropriate par 3's, and off the turf. My home course really has no par 4/5's that require an iron off the tee. Can free wheel it with driver, so not looking for a club for that reason. Only other holdup will be the price. The U series is pretty dear.

@launcher  since you have Wilson Staff as your Icon.. why not try the Wilson Staff Model Utility? I put WS blades into the bag earlier this season, and while I can game the 3 iron and 4 iron in the set, I picked up a WS Utility 2/18° in a swap with a buddy. Typically I don't get on well with any driving iron type clubs with stock graphites in them, if I match the shaft with my irons steel shaft setups they tend to work well for me. On a whim I pulled the Tensei Blue 80HYx from my Cobra F9 2-3 hybrid (from fitting cart) and put it into the WS Utility 2/18° and it is excellent. I have since added the WS Utility 3/21° and reshafted that one as well.. bag is set now..   In regards to the U500/U510.. I had a U510 for about a week and did not get on with it (again, stock graphite shaft in it) and I never changed the shaft in it since the Wilson just worked better.

Good luck in the search..

I tested both of them before buying 718 T-MB 17* 2 iron.  I suspect Titleist used 718-T-MB to come up with their designs.  The u500 and u510 are designed for different types of golfers.  Choosing which club depends on your skill.  The former is for better amateurs that regularly find the sweet-spot.  The latter is for golfers that need more forgiveness, and miss the sweet-spot more often, hence larger head, wider sole, longer heal to toe length and lower COG.  Even lofts, lengths and offset are purposely different.

Shafts can change the outcome somewhat and both have forgiveness, only u500 less than u510.  Accordingly, if someone is often getting a clunk from u500 it probably means he's missing the sweet-spot, and he'd benefit from u510.   Chose wisely, as one can add strokes while the other not as many or none at all.
