One of the amazing perks of the PGATOUR....

One of the amazing perks of the PGATOur is the ......Life time exempt. Currently there are a few players with that status...Vijay Singh, Davis Love, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and eventually Dustin Johnson. Should that perk be abolished,  expanded or left as it is? The only criteria is (20 wins and 15 years of service).

Just so you know I think that this group should be able to play where they want and when they want....they've earned it. Presently they can't play any tournament they want.....

Yup. This is not a gift. This perk is earned over a long period of time.

I don’t think the exemption is for 3 of the Majors.

There are 5 active players with 20 wins including DJ.

Then Rory has 18. Then, far as I see, Justin Thomas with 13 seems the only guy really on the radar right now playing well enough and young enough to most likely get there.

I think the exemption is well earned at 20 wins.

Its getting harder and harder to do

Going from memory, but I think it doesn’t apply to the majors, Players, Playoffs, WGCs, and Tournament of Champions. Not sure about the invitationals like Memorial.

Ernie is stuck on 19. Admittedly unlikely, but out of the blue 50+ winners have happened before.

I like the fact that the tour highlight wins. The fact that it's a small amount of players, makes it even more special.....

Great idea and great reward for performance and play over an extended period of time. I don’t see any reason for guys to be cut off from using it. I don’t see or can imagine that anyone would abuse it in the way that some of the old timers did with the Masters invites back in the day (although I don’t blame them for doing that).

I can see Tiger Woods making his farewell tour after retiring from competitive golf at the ripe age of 65, just like Jack Nicklaus did. Waving from the bridges at Augusta National and St. Andrews...... because Woods will be playing as long as he can walk but those two  will have earned it, I'm good with their last glory.

It’s fairly far down the priority category list so anyone getting into the field based on lifetime membership is taking an already vacant spot.  Making 150 cuts used to give a player some sort of status as well, veteran player or something like that. Not sure it still exists, and again was way down the priority list underneath the 125+, any KF grads, etc. I know some of the categories were eliminated when Q School got the axe, but I am glad 20 wins still gives a player a lifetime exemption.

Last time I checked, sports were entertainment.  And entertainment is driven by stars.   Anyone who wins 20 tournaments on the tour is a box office draw....yes, they may not have much of a chance to win, but then again neither do most of the players ranked outside the top 100.

Why wouldn't you want them playing, if you were a tournament director?  Would you rather have Talor Gooch and Tom Hoge?

Can anyone elaborate on this pension? Just curious...

I have a couple contacts who can tell me exactly , both considered “ journeymen “ who I can tell you aren’t hurting, which is where I heard the rumblings of how great it was for all players.  Even the ones you assume aren’t making much money.  Cursory search shows more than 600 golfers currently with more than $1mil in their pga tour account.  Pretty sure they Match 100% up to a ceiling amount , which means guys who don’t make as much can double up for every dollar they can afford to put in automatically becomes $2.     The tour put around $47 million in itself last year.

here’s a decent explanation -

Wow, I had no idea.  What a sweet set up. Sounds like the NFL could learn a thing or two from the PGA Tour.

He'll retire a lot sooner than age 65, could easily be within the next few years.

I’m sure it was a lot more than $47m last year. “Last year” in the article you linked was 2006. The article is from 2007!
It is a sweet deal but also is deferred compensation. They sacrifice bigger purses today to get more in retirement. And the money is great but to put it in perspective the average NBA salary is $7.7m per year. Very few tour players have made that in a season.

Jason Bohn talked about it briefly on the NLU Podcast recently.  Can't remember exactly what he said off the top of my head but his pension value would be equivalent to what he's made on the course or more.

Pretty interesting discussion about it on the NLU podcast a few weeks back

Got me there. I totally missed that date.  I’m sure it’s $100 mil or more now.    I guess my point is that it’s a setup that seems to make sure all are taken care of. Not purely performance based like NFL pay.  As in you won’t see a guy play 10 years and then have to sell insurance .
