claiming every pro is doing his ott miracle informercial swing is so cringey. yea obviously they're not dumping it under, but he's making it sound so revolutionary and putting a brand on an obvious move that every decent modern teacher has been coaching for a good while now is disingenuous. but given his 2000's style informercial feel to his videos, he might have been stuck in the past for a while. and actually while his swing is more neutral, his face control is going to be poor. he's still flippy and lacks any rotation. so it's like all he did was shift his dumped under swing left. so it's not really what good modern teachers are coaching, it's worse because it's not a proper shallow. the only benefit is good shots will appear straighter because you don't have to hit a hook to get it on target, but the dispersion will be the same.

Yes cheesy infomercial is exactly what it is. He probably knows he is ruining a heap of people that won’t understand that it is a cheap play on words. You need to have a reasonable quality transition and release sequence before any notion of coming over the top of your backswing will be of benefit.

IDK how I haven't clicked on this thread before but holy cow....it's fantastic lol.   l love the posted Christo blurbs...18 handicap shooting 76.....MSE hitting it 332....hahahahahahahahhaa

I was a group behind him at Santa Anita Golf Course two weeks ago, I watched him warm up on the range and lasered him off the first tee.  He was 269 down, middle right on a hard, dry fairway.  Second shot was 105 in and he one hopped the green over left.  Unfortunately the group in between us sagged off so I didn't see much more of him.  If he's hitting it 332 he's doing it down the fast lane of the Foothill Freeway.

I don't know that its all that sinister as much as it is the typical guy who spends a lot of his time hitting range balls and trying different feels. Like any range rat, he stumbles onto a new epiphany, and then becomes convinced he has figured out something no one else has, or has found the one feel that Hogan kept to himself. Its always especially delicious when it seems to be counterintuitive to conventional thinking. What Christo does that is different is he takes those new epiphanies and turns them into products. Nothing necessarily wrong with that--the product will help some people and make some others worse....as all golf instruction does.

I think there’s something wrong with it. He is no better than the top 10 or 20 golfers at any club anywhere in the world. But the nature of modern golf is many more people don’t join a club and see what the relevant standards are. He is duping them into thinking he is discovering these high level esoteric secrets when really he is just another 5 handicapper experimenting with their golf game, but taking money for it.

I’ve lost count of how many times he has said he has found Hogan’s secret. The recent one of coming over the top being the final piece is almost negligent. You need to have a solid understanding of how to sequence the downswing before that can be relevant and of use. People that have been told they come over the top in lessons have been given the green light by who they might see as the all knowing internet guru. Just because he shows a few videos of the greats here and there.

Edit: “I tried to make a correct move, but I didn’t have the talent or patience to implement the changes, so instead I’ve made my crappy OTT/EE/flippy swing a secret weapon. Please leave cash at the door with your sanity and any chance of becoming a halfway decent golfer, you suckers.”

I remember when when he first started and came up with random names for "moves" like "shangri la" (which is a hotel chain) and probably other BS like "downward dog" (I made that up 😅).

I wonder why people will pay for a lesson with him than find a local PGA professional.

This thread is a great accompaniment to my morning coffee today. I used to watch MSE’s videos years ago but drifted away and recently came across his OTT swing vids on YouTube and wow….I must say I can’t believe he went down the “internet guru” type of route.

I noticed he started putting out a new video every Sunday after pga/lpga events and no matter who won he had their swing up claiming they were using an OTT move. He was just drawing different colored lines hoping uninformed golfers will buy this charade.

One of those videos was of a recent LPGA winner who so clearly had an in to out path I had to comment how he was lying and trying to squeeze every weeks winner into his “OTT swing method”. He replied and told me he was going to post a video proving me wrong and how all those swings were OTT. It’s been at least a month and a half now and I still don’t see that video.

He's actually got a pretty good swing. But he has created a number of different brands. The latest brand is the OT Miracle, in which he means hand path, not shaft. I'm sure a lot of his students have OT hand path and early shaft steepening. Its fairly tricky to take a recreational golfer, who slices the ball, and insist that they continue to go OT but then simultaneously wrangle their shaft and face angle into a spot that reduces the slice. I'd much rather have my slicers just dump the shaft under and twist their arms early so they can have a chance at hitting a draw for the first time in their life.

In his personal swing/quest, he will probably end up slipping into a gauge-y pull fade, especially with his "already too steep" angle of attack. There will be a new adjustment/revelation to address this tendency...but I don't have to go on this journey because I've already been down all these rabbit holes.

In some sense, watching someone's journey through the different levels of understanding swing dynamics is tiring in the same way as listening to a starry-eyed college student tell you that there is a new type of socialism that will work this time around. Likewise, I needn't go on that journey with them.

What are your thoughts on “taking a lesson from” now equating to “studied under”? The latter generally refers to some type of internship, traineeship, working as assistant to etc.

I agree with what you say as to what this will do to people. In my opinion you  need to learn what it feels like to hit proper draws and even overdraws before going back more to the middle of the spectrum. Preaching this to the masses is disingenuous at best.

Yeah, it sounds cooler to say "studied under" and fits the fusion he is trying to create with the martial arts motif. Doesn't really bother me.

By feeling the handle move out on transition...while shallowing the shaft....he is actually talking about external rotation of the right arm, whereby you could have that arm and hand movement, but keep your shoulders more closed and then hit a draw with the correct path and attack. But if he continues to assist that movement with the right shoulder moving out too much, he will just trap across it. Initially...especially with a short iron....it feels like great "compression" because the handle will be more forward and thus de-loft the clubface more. But, his dilema now is that he's trying to figure out how to "cover" the ball and get better "compression" while not hitting too much of a pull or pull cut. Those things are going to come as a package deal until he realizes the part of the equation he left out. That could end up being the next revelation.

But, he should do the most basic thing. If you are going for the Hogan theme...it should be clear by watching the footage why he can have that type of hand path and still deliver neutral path angles, with fairly shallow angles of attack. If you're honest, you have to make your body do some very dramatically different things to get to the promised land. That is a sad truth for all of us.

MSE will never, and I mean "NEVER EVER" scratch what Hogan discovered. He still thinks the Hogan dynamic has anything to do with firing his hands and shoulders a certain way. He probably saw the shallow then steep shaft of Hogan coming into the hitting area and thought "yeah that's it, even the man himself does it". After all these years he still has no shame.

And still none of his so called "students" are here to put in any good word for him. AMAZING!!
