Yes. He has more than just a secret(s), he has a miracle. 😇

Virt I’ve been loving all the Mac stuff being shared lately. Have you read much about his court case back in 1986? Has a lot of similarities to the current golf saga. Similar employment law issues. You being a bit of a morad guy that is. He was calling himself a virtuoso around that time so you probably have.

Are you talking about all the stuff on Kevin’s channel? Yeah, I started following Mac back around 87 and have always been interested in his stuff. Don’t know anything about his court case though. I definitely got my username from his usage…..but it’s also mostly tongue-in-cheek.

I wrote a long response detailing the court case but it seems to have disappeared. It’s so annoying how often that is happening to replies on here now. Must remember to copy and save to clipboard.

Yes the Golf in the Cosmos series.

Mac called a volunteer a bidch and said Riviera was prepared like a public course and then sued the tour for $12 million. This was after being fined and given a 6 week suspension. Arnold leaned on him in an informal players meeting in the locker room and he dropped the suit. Amazing he then won his first event not long after.

His latest one is now working with Gabe Ryder, of all people, to attract "investors" to the miracle swing.  I never saw that coming.

Insisting someone be a world class golfer is a not a realistic standard for an instructor.

There's an old saying in baseball that goes: The best hitters make the worst batting coaches.

When things come naturally to you (as they do with elite athletes) you often don't understand what you're doing enough to teach it to others.

When you've had to struggle to be good; when things don't come naturally, then you have to learn everything in detail to put it in practice, giving you a good understanding of what you are doing.

This isn't a comment on Cristo one way or another (I really don't follow him).

Agree about Sevam.  He was a good player that tried to pass on his knowledge out of passion. He bounced around mini tours and Canadian Am qualifying. A scratch golfer. Christo Garcia on the other hand was never a good player. Never played high school or college golf etc. Like most he was an average golfer. He decided to get better and document his progress. Nothing wrong with that. He got better using Hogans Five Lessons. I enjoyed watching him progress. He became a single digit handicap with a nice looking swing although it has tons of flaws, mostly early extension and hand flipping, but he hit it fine. My issue is when he attempted to co-op the concept into making money and giving lessons. He simply isn’t good enough or experienced enough. People that buy into it are just feeding the grift. That said it is a free country. I’m sure he could help beginners despite not being a certified class A teaching pro. A good player would never go to a 6 handicap who has never been better than that. It’s really that simple.

His target audience has to be older golfers, I don't think too many young golfers are still looking at Hogan for their swing model.

"5 Lessons" is still on the best selling golf book.

The paperback is the #1 selling golf book on Amazon.

The audiobook is the #4 selling golf book on Amazon.

The Kindle version is the #13 selling golf book on Amazon.

The Kindle Unlimited version is the #42 selling golf book on Amazon.

Of the top 50 golf books on Amazon, 4 of them are version of Hogan's "5 Lessons".

I'm not sure who is buying these, but I doubt it's just a bunch of old guys.

I don't think younger people buy much books anyway, let alone golf and better yet black and white golf books from the 1950's. Probably mostly middle age and older folks buying them.

You could make the same statement about golf in general.

Golf trends older. I would bet that, even on this forum, the preponderance of people are over 45.

Golf, in general, has done a terrible job of getting young people involved in the sport.

Love the call out! Man that’s a great rant by the OP. Don’t know anything about the MSE , kinda staying away just on personal observation. Does this Christo have a PGA teaching certificate? Just curious.

No he doesn’t. He would be 50/50 to pass the PAT on any given day and would likely need multiple attempts. Besides that there are written tests and you have to actually work at a golf facility. Anyone can hang out a shingle and give golf lessons just like in the Peanuts cartoons. “Free advice given” except in his case he charges money. That’s the grift.

Jimmy Ballard was never certified by the PGA, despite teaching many pros and being one of the most influential teachers of his day.

Ballard strongly disagreed with the PGA's approach to teaching, so he refused to get certified in their system (feeling it would be hypocritical for him to do so).

The PGA certification is similar to many other certifications (from the Bar to licenses for hair stylists), it's purpose is to limit the number of people in the profession, not to guarantee quality.

I don't see certifications as important as getting the job done.

Yes he was.  He gave it up after being admonished over his method which was deemed controversial. He had touring pros as students by then. It is an example that supports your point but doesn’t prove it. My statement was meant to be general. Ballard could play btw. Garcia doesn’t have good players as students and can’t play. They aren’t the same. I pointed it out because I consider the PGA certificate a super low bar and I doubt Garcia could get it. I was in Florida in the 70s and 80s playing competitive golf and took lessons from Phil Ritson. Ballard had some students in the GTJGA. He was well respected.

We all know he should not be calling it "over the top" because that's a misuse of that term. Sure, OTT of a drag inside... Now, I noticed that NOBODY in any of his videos ever mises a shot. No chunks, no spinning open and pulling it, nothing. All these 30 cappers just flush eveything, most from a tee. Excellent editing. Reminds me of showing 300 pound people using The Ab Cruncher and 3 months later they have a six pack. Show 25 shots of these "students" with 4 irons and 3 woods off the deck and some wedges and don't edit it. Lets see the % of flushed shots. That's being truthful.

Don't want to stir the hornet's nest, but I see this guy on X all the time making claims to promote his OTT swing. As I recall, he'll show a hand path trace that may move a little inside to out, but the club head often makes impact on plane or just below plan. Of course, when we ams struggle with OTT it's often from first moving from the top with the arms/upper body moving the club way outside and over the plane.

Also...

There will always be an audience for people like him. He’s put in the work. (to market himself) It doesn’t matter that he’s full of sh*t and not any good. Some people are like that, they bounce from one thing to another and pretend they have accomplished a lot. He’s not important and probably barely scratching out a living. Who cares?
