There will always be an audience for people like him. He’s put in the work. (to market himself) It doesn’t matter that he’s full of sh*t and not any good. Some people are like that, they bounce from one thing to another and pretend they have accomplished a lot. He’s not important and probably barely scratching out a living. Who cares?

He has lots of followers so some people care and are fooled.

That’s very true but despite all that I think if someone new to the game who is serious about learning will be drawn to all types of instruction and books etc. as much as I don’t think Cristo can 1) play 2) have any good juniors or pros that he teaches and 3) occasionally shoots in the 80s - meaning he is a non professional 3-5 handicap “guy” with a background in media - I would still think if someone attended his clinics or followed his “method” which has changed over time, I do think they could actually benefit. So at the end of the day I don’t care about him. Let him run his little cottage industry. He loves golf so he’s fine by me. But I’d love to play him heads up for money. lol.

Don't want to stir the hornet's nest, but I see this guy on X all the time making claims to promote his OTT swing. As I recall, he'll show a hand path trace that may move a little inside to out, but the club head often makes impact on plane or just below plan. Of course, when we ams struggle with OTT it's often from first moving from the top with the arms/upper body moving the club way outside and over the plane.

Also...

He started popping up in my feeds too and that's the exact issue I have with his "philosophy", similar to some of the "Upper Core" swing ideas.

Most amateurs have a pretty defined set of common problems, problems that often have terms. These guys use those same terms to describe something else and you end up with what is effectively predatory clickbait "instruction". This hack's insistence on continuing to use "OTT" as a part of his branding despite not having a swing that does that is damaging to the casual viewer who *actually* suffers from OTT related issues.

It's a shame because when he first started out a decade or so ago he made some lovely "I'm on a journey" content. It seemed like a genuine path to try and improve, and he did do so. His background in production made his videos really watchable, and his easy manner was likeable.

Unfortunately, at some point he got lost up his own orifice and moved from being a willing subject into some kind of huckster pseudo-guru. The mad thing is that he had enough traction to have continued to make good content as that willing student, and he would have been adding to the golf world. This iteration of his "journey" just adds to the endless stream of bull that's ruining handicap golfers chances of improving.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of the full arc there so thanks for sharing that. Unfortunately the reason I am seeing him pop up now is likely the reason the whole huckster pseudo-guru thing works; it gets more views and clicks and therefore gets boosted algorithmically. Drawing in potential marks with bait + enraging the nerds that recognize your BS both lead to the boost, because a comment is engagement and i'm definitely in the latter category. 😅

Definitely this! I'm glad that I don't have any social media at all these days. It's the Wild West out there. :classic_laugh:

Exactly! One instructor who is well versed in biomechanics has lightly challenged him more than once and gotten no real answers. He even claimed Tiger was OTT and someone pointed out that the swing posted from Tiger was a stinger from a bad angle. I also posted a swing from Tiger where I drew some lines on the swing showing no OTT moves. Dude doesn’t care. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Yeah that is definitely where the grift crosses the line....when they start recasting everything they see to fit their little narrative.

Super agree. I watched his content early on when he was finding his swing and trying to replicate Hogan. It was really great stuff, and super admirable how he turned his swing around.

Then he started this whole swing guru, buy my lessons thing and it's gone further and further downhill.

I agree with this working well with the algorithms. It’s the modern world. Outside of golf it is known as rage farming. Posting to get a reaction because the platforms see comments as being worth equal whether positive or negative. Whether the content is of any quality or not. The platforms only care about the end user staying on the platform so ads can be put in front of them. I wouldn’t be surprised if the stats show that more than 50% of the time people spend commenting is on disagreeing with the main post. Agreeing doesn’t take much time to communicate.
