Best Putter for SBST stroke??

MichMan123

Recommended Posts

hello All

I struggle to properly release a putter and hit and pray.  I took a few lessons and My stroke is just too striaght.  Not enough arc in it.

Would a Center Shafted Putter help with a Striaght Back and through stroke?

Mid Mallet?  Blade?

I had a really good run with the triple track 2 ball but acutally hate the look and feel.

A lot of people struggle with the visuals of a center shafted putter, but if you don't it may be worth looking at. But the options for a center shafted putter are pretty limited.

Without seeing your stroke it is hard to say, but if your stroke is SBST then something from Odyssey with the double bend shaft may work well for you. As for the style of putter, once again that will be down to preference. But if you also struggle with speed control then a mid mallet or full mallet may be worth looking at. Maybe start with looking at an Odyssey #7 design with the double bend shaft, or even a PING Tyne with the DB shaft.

GO, GET, FIT!!!

What will work for you won't work for others, you may need a ton of toe hang to keep that face square at impact or just a touch of toe hang.

Well if you are SBST, a center shaft should work well, or more easily found_ a face balanced putter.  I am close to SBST and I've had good luck with these putters:

  • Ping C67- This is an old (2007) design but it a center shaft with no offset and no insert.
  • Bettinardi BB39- A mid mallet design from 2018 or maybe 2019. It's face balanced and made of black carbon steel without an insert.
  • Scotty Cameron Kombi S- This is a face balanced mallet in stainless steel without an insert.
  • Odyssey Double Wide- This is a wide, face balanced blade with an insert. I think it dates from 2015 or 2016.

All of those putters are used but you can find similar new designs from the various manufacturers.

I hope this is helpful.

If there is one thing I've learned about putters, your stroke style will not always work with putters that are supposedly designed for it. There are plenty of tour players who have SBST strokes that use toe balanced putters, and gated players who use face balanced.

I have an old Spalding TPM 3 that I mess around with from time to time. My stroke is not nearly as gated as that putter is made for, and it works very well.

Players would do well to forget about matching stroke to putter, try a bunch, and go with what works.

I agree with this 100%.

I recently finally went in for a putter fitting and determined I have a SBST stoke with just a touch of arc. They suggested a mallet style putter with up to 30 degree toe hang. I’ve since picked up a few putters that have been amazing for my putting. I had always had a preference for blades but apparently they have way to much toe hang for me. So I’m after putters that are face balance or just a touch of toe hang. Anyways, these have worked well for me and you may wanna check them out:

Scotty Cameron Flowback 5

- I really like this one because alignment is crazy easy and it’s more of a mid-sized mallet. I really don’t get along with giant mallets, I just don’t like the aesthetics.

Bettinardi SS28 Slotback

- I really like this one because it looks a lot like a blade but easier to align due to the Slotback and pretty forgiving. It’s not a mallet but really suits my SBST stroke. There’s just a touch of toe hang. Very soft feel off the face.

Bettinardi Queen B8
- Everything I said about the SS28 but the feel off the face has a little more of a click. Absolutely beautiful putter and very confidence inspiring for me. The blade is a little wider front to back making alignment even easier.

Taylormade FCG w/single bend neck

- I just grabbed this to kill time putting at Roger Dunn while waiting for one of my clubs to finish getting work done to it. I never liked the other TM Spiders because they were too big, but in person I really like the look of the FCG. Most importantly it’s crazy easy to align and my speed control was fantastic with it. Feels very soft off the face but has a little click to it which I like.  I really don’t need another putter but I’m having a hard time not buying this because I putted SO well with it.

I think anyone with a SBST stroke who may not like traditional mallets should give any of these a shot.

Hope this helps!

I have a more SBST stroke and have always had my best luck with face balanced and/or high MOI mallets. Sabertooth, Futura X, etc. Was fitted this summer for a LAB DF and decided not to buy one. Tried a bunch of off the rack options at different shops and couldn’t find anything.

Ended up buying an Axis1 Rose and immediately put into play. Putting has the strength of my game ever since. Love everything about it. Even those 3’ - 4’ breaking knee knockers with money on the line I manage to make them because the putter is so stable even when I’m shaky.

I'm not sure that's a thing. It's either SBST or it's not.

Not all blades are created the same. Right now I have a Seemore M7 that is a face balanced "blade style". Blade style putters come with all sorts of toe hang and the Axis 1 someone mentioned is a toe UP blade.

I (mostly) agree with @Konklifer but I wouldn't totally forget about matching putter to stroke. I would certainly experiment with different types and toe hangs.

Phil was a marvelous putter for a long time with a straight down toe hang putter and a SBST stroke but in general I don't think it's wise to go too far off from your natural(?) stroke - unless you're trying to change your stroke.

I have my putters with various toe hangs or face balanced. Depending on how I need to "shock" the brain at the time, I'll switch.

Have fared best with just slight toe hangs for a little more flow, or face balanced if I can't stop leaving them out to the right. Then, if I come over the top, and need to slow the toe down a bit, go back to the more slight arc style.

Face balanced blade and mallet? You bet. I like options.

Some face balanced mallets feel more stable than others but a sleeper that has caught my attention for stable feel is the Mizuno M craft 3. Odyssey/Toulon has similar design options to choose from but I was pleasantly surprised how solid the Mizuno felt in a practice studio setting.

I was in a similar boat this season. Just couldn’t find any consistency with the flatstick. Was always a blade guy, I can’t seem to control speed very well with a mallet. For my SBST stroke the Ping Sigma 2 center shafted Kushin C is working flawlessly. So flawlessly in fact I’m having a center shafted face balanced putter built by Mann because I can’t putt with an OTR putter.
