Surlyn/2 piece vs urethane/multi piece.....launch & descent angle vs spin?

I want to preface this with the fact that I believe that urethane and multi layer balls are vastly superior as far as performance goes for the majority of people.

 

For me, I’ve been playing the Pro V1X this year and have loved the short game and control it’s provided. But it also is a ball that launches low for me and hasn’t been much of a help in holding greens (it has SOME, and seems to be the best tour ball at that).

 

Note that with a broken down body I only carry driver 190-200 yards and carry a 7 iron 125-130 yards, so I’m unique here. Is it possible that the increase in initial launch angle and high launch (I know, lower spin) in general of the 2 piece type balls like Softfli, Supersoft, Tour Soft, et al might help me out more compared to the V1X? I think I can adjust to the short game with added height now that I’ve gone from a 58* to a 60* wedge exclusively, but might the short irons and the rest actually hold better because of my lack of speed and impact conditions?

I play the Supersoft and SoftFeel quite a bit.  I like them as I like the feel (even if slower) and I think they fly higher off the irons (which suits my eye better).

 

Do they stop on the green any faster given the higher apex and steeper decent angle?  I'm not sure.  My gut reaction is that the short irons do NOT stop as fast with the surlyn (as roll out a little bit vs. the ProV I can hold within a foot or two a lot of the time).  In contrast, some of the mid/lower loft irons can stop just as quickly due to the increased height.  The problem with analyzing this is that it is very hard to control the strike, exactly where on the green the ball hit (flat, slight upslope/downslope), wind, etc.

 

Personally, on full irons shots I feel like the difference either way is pretty small.  A lot of these balls spin within 1000 rpms or so on full swing iron shots, which is roughly the difference in one club (usually not a huge difference in how much release we'd expect all else equal).  Can the trajectory make up for this?  Like I said above I'm not entirely sure / very hard to say.

 

Best thing you can do is try a few rounds with a ball like this.  Some people believe there's a material difference in runout while others are probably closer to what I have above.  I may also guess that for lower speeds/shot trajectory, the increased spin of the ProV1 may help more (only going to get so much more height on shots).

To me there is only one question that needs answered, are your scores better with one ball versus another?

For my game, I seem to do better with the lower cost balls. The only benefit to the tour balls is the feel and if I have short sided myself. But, as often as not,  the extra spin on short shots leaves me short.  As I have no problem stopping a Titleist TruSoft with a full iron the extra spin off the tee is a negative.
