planning a golf trip to williamsburg VA

I like the Colonial Williamsburg package.  If you stay at one of their hotels (I like the Woodlands as its right next to the Visitor Center) you get a deal on their two great courses (Golden Horseshoe Gold and Green). Plus you get a discount on pro shop merchandise and a coupon book for tourist sites and free transportation on their bus system.  I'm not familiar with any specific packager for Williamsburg golf.  Kingsmill and Fords Colony both have stay and play packages too. Fords has 3 courses and KM has 2.  I've stayed at all three places and prefer the Colonial Williamsburg package.

Edit: Forgot to mention Golden Horseshoe also has an executive 9-hole course which is free to walk (cart extra) if you get their package.

Kingsmill is a good time for sure, I really like the River Course there. Another one if you're a golf architecture nut is Royal New Kent. It's a Mike Strantz and it is wildly fun.

Yes i was going to mention Royal New Kent. Also if you play it, another great option is Venteria (sp) just a few miles away.

Viniterra.  I once played 36 at Royal New Kent (second round was a fraternity golf tournament), and then my friends thought trying to get 18 in at Viniterra was a good idea late in the day.  It was so dark on 18 that we could only find my drive, we all hit an approach from my ball, and only I found the green.  Had to putt by cell phone light.  Royal New Kent is a blast.  Viniterra was long from what I remember.  We knew we were running out of daylight when we started and I'd done some drinking that day, so I couldn't really speak to it much, but it was a nice course in great condition.  As the others have said, Golden Horseshoe, Kingsmill, and Ford Colony are the must plays in Williamsburg.  Not sure about cost of housing as most of those courses I played while I was either in college or still had college friends to crash with.

Can't go wrong on Golden Horseshoe Gold. Last time I was there we played Gold & Green on the same day and got a great rate for doing that. Gold course was in great shape and a lot of fun. Green isn't a bad course but I'm sure the others in the area like Kingsmill, Royal New Kent, and Fords Colony are better. Green was also not in the shape that Gold was in. It was clear that Gold gets the lions share of the budget.

I'm assuming you're driving in?  Other posts have got the Williamsburg area pretty well covered, but if you feel like adding a round on your way in/out....

If you're coming from the west, Spring Creek or Kinloch.

If you're coming from the north, Creighton Farms or the 1757 Club.

If you're coming from the south....I don't know....turn around and head to Pinehurst haha.  I can't really think of any courses of note due south of Williamsburg?

in williamsburg now Oct 24 thru nov 15. conditions have firmed a bunch. last week soggy cart path only. day 1 golden horseshoe gold ( as good as golf gets) day 2 vinitera( impressive) day 3 royal new kent( 2nd fav in the area) day4 Golden horseshoe green ( really really good) day 5 governors land at 2 rivers (awesome, best condition but very private) day 5 golden horseshoe gold( improved drying< as good as golf gets again )and then we get to Day 6 kingsmill river(awful!!!) that in mind i was born and raised in the burg and kingsmill has always set the standard of golf in that town, that has obviously changed. no starter on any of the 3 course, an utter cluster f , nobody had any idea of where and when to go. not to mention the girls were competing in a major individual mid atlantic tourney to play on green that were rolling a solid 4 or 5. hats off to that superintendent! i know a bunch of KM members and the word is its changed hands twice in the last 5 fives years and it shows in major budget cuts. lots of work cut out for them for the upcoming LPGA april. 2 more days coming at the w country club and of course Gold course. you can see i have a clear favorite. can't recommend on places to stay because i stay with friends but i would lean on fords colony on colonial williamsburg. hope this helps. not my first golf trip rodeo, best regards

no i didn't stay at kingsmill. growing up there have a bunch fiends and family i stay with, a nice little perk. i will say i would side on the skeptical side on staying at the resort as it seemed as they extremely under staffed. just concerned on your service. word on the street, they are in management disarray. if you decide on staying there you do have access to the courses, however their are better golf options as i mentioned. if it your first trip to williamsburg, stay in CW you'll have a better experience, unless you require that resort thing. my bet is is you stayed at CW or FC someone could get you on KM if desired, neither have been hard to get on unless an event is going on. i'ii say it again save your money on KM. so many better tracks in the area. dont get me wrong the river course aways among one of my favorite stops, but for the money, my least favorite stop this go around and we played 0$. anyway, hope i could help. just trying to save some money and trouble.

I'll second all the recommendations for Ford's Colony. I've played their Blue Heron and Blackheath courses and like both of them and I've only ever heard good things about the Marshhawk one too. I also can't recommend Royal New Kent highly enough. It was in great shape when I played there last Friday despite the over 2 inches of rain they got the day before and it feels completely different to the other stuff in Williamsburg like Ford's Colony, Kingsmill, Golden Horseshoe or Williamsburg National. RNK is also only a couple miles away from Brickshire which is a fun layout and much easier which makes for a good 36 hole day.
