Maltby PTM Blacks - question.

Looking for opinions on the sound/feel of the Maltby PTM Blacks.  I hit the DBM's and wasn't thrilled with the sound & feel of them.

They weren't bad but just didn't do it for me.  Do the PTM B's feel and sound the same ?  Any feedback on that and their playability is appreciated.

I'd say they feel pretty similar. Both the DBM and the PTM Blacks are black versions of full forgings, so should feel pretty similar.

 

Playability, the PTM are much more game-improvement than the DMB/TE irons. They don't look like game improvement irons, but they are.

Thanks.  The PTM blacks are only available in sets and if they feel like the DBM's, they may be too firm/clicky for me.

Any input on the STi2 iron heads as an option ?

The STi2 are cast so if "firm/clicky" is a concern, then they might not work.  You could always build or have a test club built to your specs.  I really like the STi2, but then I'm not concerned about feel, I like performance 😉

I'm playing STi2 with graphite, feel/sound is just fine. Don't know how they would be with steel shafts. But like ode says, they are cast, so you won't get forged feel. They do have some sort of material in the cavity, so they do feel/sound better than I expected. And I've had all the current heads from Maltby...TS1, TS2, DBM, TE, PTM (not blacks though) and the STi2 does not feel/sound much worse than any of them - except the satin PTM...those are the softest of the lot.

Sounds like the STi2 might be quite the bargain iron head (esp. with graphite shafts).  Unfortunately, the satin PTM is no longer available for a set.  Worth a shot I suppose.

I was gonna suggest the satin PTM in my first response but figured I'd best see if they were still available....to my dismay they are not in the middle irons☹️. You might try a WTB to see what turns up.  I was gonna build a set this winter but that ain't happening anymore.

I play the PTM blacks right now.  When hit off the middle they feel exactly like I would think a forged club is supposed to feel like.  I have been missing them off the toe lately so they may be a little clickier than usual but nothing offensive.

 

I put some vibration dampeners in the shafts I used.  I feel like it cuts down the sound / feel / vibration enough to be super comfortable but not mess with the feeling when you hit a bad shot.

 

Just bought another set of heads as backup because if they are discontinuing them we won't be able to find them.  I wanted to build a satin set but that also never happened.  I like the PTM Black so much I don't know if I can go back to a satin club

Well, we know feel is individual and I find these two irons don’t feel similar. I am with the OP on the feel of the DBM — I hated it. Hard and unrewarding, and that is with a Recoil graphite shaft I had in a 5 iron head. I still have it and never take it out. 
 

The PTM to me feels excellent, I like the sole design, and it is a very playable iron. I had two demos sent to me — one chrome, one black, both with XCaliber Rapid Taper shafts — and could tell no difference. But for me the performance, sound and feel of the PTM is significantly better than the DBM. The PTM feels like any forged iron IMO and I am having a set of the Blacks built with the RT shafts, which are a unique design. Worth making your own comparison.

I play the PTM satins and they are very soft, softer than my Srixon 585/785 combo set. Bummed to hear they are discontinued.

think the RT shafts made a difference or is it the heads alone ?

I couldn’t say. Could be the DBM simply doesn’t suit me. I hit some shots that felt nice but I felt puring it was not occurring all that often. It actually could have been the Recoil — that shaft in the lighter weights doesn’t work for me. 
 

I definitely think the RT shafts help with the PTMs or any head, but I still feel like it is more than that and I just like them more. Nice through the turf. Sole is thin for the longish blade profile and I like that. They kind of remind me of the old Adams Idea Pro Forged. I hit two PTM 6 iron demos with 95 and 75g RT shafts for three weeks at the range and on the course and I honestly couldn’t hit a 6 iron any better than I hit those, with the unexpected development being the 75g was the one I found almost addictive. Not what I expected. I am usually in 110-120 steel. The RT shafts are enough of a “different” experience that I want to try them and the PTM was a pleasant surprise.
