What Ventus is closest to AD-DI?

Recommended Posts

Hey all - just getting back into playing a fair bit and stepping up from my trusty ol Titleist 910, 8.5* shafted with Tour AD-DI 7X.

Making the move to a SIM in 9* and was going to load up a Ventus Blue 6X tipped .5".

In the absence of a local shop to get on a monitor to really test before I order, that seemed like a good combo to hopefully lower my ball flight a smidge.

Any thoughts on what the closest Ventus would be for replacement? I'll plan on refitting my DI with a TM sleeve later to have that as an option too, just such a solid shaft still all these years later!

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

I used to play the DI-7x.  Now Ventus Black 7x.  I've tested the entire Ventus line and would say that the closest shaft to the DI-7x is the Ventus Blue.  Graphite Design touts the entire DI line as high launch low spin, but it's closer to mid launch low spin which pretty much falls in line with the Ventus Blue.

The Ventus blue would be closest to the DI. Both shafts are considered mid launch only major diffrence is the ventus has a stiffer tip along with newer technology "velacore" which lowers the spin drastically compared to the the GD DI.

Velocore from my understanding doesn't reduce spin drastically.  It supposedly helps tighten up dispersion.  The Ventus Blue however, does have a softer tip compared to the DI.  Launch angle with both shafts are very similar with the DI maybe launching a degree higher.  They are both low spin shafts however.  To the OP, you might like the Ventus Blue even more so compared to the DI because it's not nearly as boardy feeling.

So, I am experimenting with a Ventus Blue TR Velocore now on a new Callaway Rogue LS 9*.  Got one round in and it feels so much more "boardy" than any of the Tour AD's I have in constant rotation.  I play an AD-TP / AD-DI mostly with similar results (AD-DI launches higher), an AD-VR and AD-XC (all in the 6s version) on a Titleist TSi3 9*.

Obviously I will need some more time on the Ventus but at first session, I'm not experiencing any of the same feel as the Tour AD lines at all.  It didn't feel like I was able to load the Ventus at all - just low bullets...  but I'll give it a few more rounds for a better observation.

... Shafts are just so personal and how you swing them is unique so one persons boardy is anothers ideal. I went through two driver shaft fittings recently. I play the AD-MT and the Ventus Blue and Red didn't work for me at all. I have a smooth swing around 95 but it can get a little higher if I go after it and the Ventus felt too tight for my swing and nothing like the smooth feel of my AD-MT. Fitter only let me hit a few with each and took it away because he didn't like the trajectory or spin and by the third pass he knew I was changing my swing for the shaft. Fwiw the new Tensei Blue and the AD-IZ were the best fits for me.

Feel is subjective.  The DI had less feel for me than the Ventus Blue ever did.  As far as the Ventus TR, it does feel more linear compared to the DI but still has good feel to it IMO.  FYI, I had the first gen DI in my bag for many years back in day.  I can see how the Ventus TR could be harder to load compared to the DI.  It's much stiffer in the mid and handle and plays more like a Ventus Black than the Blue IMO.

Wanted to post a follow-up to my usage with the Blue Velocore TR 6s (with Callaway Rogue ST LS).  I want to say I have at least 10-15 rounds (69 shots) with it and it's gone from a low bullet roller to a perfect driver combo for me.  I'm not going to say that it feels easier to load than any of the Tour AD versions I play with but it does what others have suggested here better than any driver I have played in years, tightens dispersion... significantly.

My average distance has gone up more than 25 yards and this is not a lie (261 to 288).   I am sure the constant 100 plus degree temps and lesser wind is playing a part in the distance gains but what stands out is the confidence in knowing where that ball is going AND the comments i am getting from playing partners on the sound and trajectory - they all wanna give it a swing.

In most of the rounds captured in the list below, I was on courses with super tight fairways but not too punishing rough where I could gamble a lot more off the tee - played the misses much more liberally - and while the rights/ lefts percentages could be tightened, they were often planned misses.  also, took out a couple of sub 225 shots (into three plus club winds) and the 350 plus shots (deadpan rolls or heavy winds).    What this Driver has done is allow me to play the big stick and go over/ around hazards where previously I had a hybrid in my hand on these holes... ultimately getting more Eagle opportunities.

i'm very happy with the Ventus Blue TR 6s.   I may try out a 5s or Red 6s to see if they feel a bit more effortless but I'd imagine they'll introduce some of the unwanted spin this shaft has removed from my game.

You're consistent with your misses hitting to all fields(baseball).  Good to see that your distance has increased though which is the great equalizer in your case.

I tried ventus blue in my 3W and it lasted two rounds and then I went back to my AD DI 7x.  Didn't feel anything like the AD DI.  AD DI is smoother to me and just fit my swing better.

Like Ian at TXG says - if you love a shaft, why try to find a shaft like it when you can still get the shaft you love?

Ha! Same thing here - tried the TR in both driver and 3W and just couldn't beat the feel of the Graphite Design shafts for me. I'd been gaming the DI since it came out however long ago and just recently switched to the TP and love it. UB is in testing right now but the TP will probably get its spot back in the bag. Just something about the feel of their shafts really clicks vs the Ventus.

Yup. I wanted to get in on the hype and tried just about every Ventus and it just always felt dead to me. No idea why as I’m not overly technical when it comes to shafts , but I know what I like and Ventus isn’t it!

Blue TR has an ultra-stiff tip with stiff mid-and handle.  That tip is going to feel boardy to people that come from Tour AD.  Sounds like the tip and mid-section and handle might be a bit too much for what you're used to.

All I will say is that I never got along with the DI line but I crush the Ventus blue. Not sure exactly on how they stack up spec wise, but the blue felt more mid kick yet stable and the DI low kick and loose.

DI works for many but I never got along. Found much more success with the TP. Played the TP for 2-3 years now play the Ventus blue.

YMMV
