Couldn't get grip on?????

A buddy at work asked me to put a new shaft in his TM M2(2016) driver. He chose a pro launch red 65 XS. I pulled the adapter and installed it on the new shaft, butt trimmed it to length, and finally proceeded to put the grip on. The grip is a GP tour velvet cord. I do all my club repair/work outside in my shed. Live in the northeast, so temperatures this week have been hovering around 25 degrees. First problem, couldn't get the tape to stick. It felt like plain paper. I used a heat gun to warm it, but it kept cooling down too fast. Finally, I got it to stick enough, but while trying to push the grip on, it just wouldn't budge. I just switched back to Bramptons solvent, and had to use a ton of it. Again, finally after a considerable amount of exertion, and now a very sore shoulder, i got the grip on(!!!!) Anyone have any ideas on why this was such a nightmare? Should mention, I also left the grip in the shed for about a week.

You answered your own question. Temp was way too cold. Adhesive on the tape will be cold and not as sticky. Solvent will be thick and not responsive. Grip will be cold and loose elasticity. All that equals a huge pain in the a-- when it comes to getting grips on.

Yes - much too cold for components to be left in below freezing temps. If you don't have facilities inside to work on clubs at least keep all supplies and components inside until you want to work. Then go outside quickly and finish the job.

Thanks for the tips. I did make sure to keep the epoxy indoors, and let the shaft/adapter cure indoors as well. Didn't think it would affect the solvent though? I've been asked by a couple of other guys at work this week to do some club work, but I told them both to call in the Spring.

Best part of it all is, I usually don't like to talk about a fee for repair work, and just leave it up to the discretion of the individual. They are mostly co-workers and friends that hit me up. Usually works out pretty well. I've been handed everything from a case of beer, to a bottle to cash. Not this time though. Handed the guy his driver, and he said thanks, and walked away.

I think the onerous is on you to set a fee up front, otherwise the legions of entitled people out there will just assume it was your privilege to serve them. I do grips and re-shafting for a lot of guys at my club but my costs are clear up front (typically half of big box stores) and must be paid in cash up front. Eliminates 90% of problems.

When I do jobs for friends related to the trade I am in I don't ask for payment but at the same time I don't expect to give up my time and save them a significant amount of money for free. The same as I would never dream of taking a freebie from anyone doing a job for me no matter how small.

Even if it is just a case of beers or a box of cakes or something its still nice to show some gratitude for a job done.

I had a buddy ask me to extend his irons, ordered the extensions with another order of mine and he changes his mind. Not cost effective to send back. Now when he asks about club work I let him know of the shops in the area that do club work. Thankfully I hadn't ordered the grips yet!

Couldn't agree more. I think I'm my own worst enemy in this case. I give people the benefit of the doubt, and it usually works out well. Just the few times that it comes back to bite you that can leave you soured.
