40th Birthday Trip to Scotland

I’d almost postponed this to another couple years down the road but I think I’m going to give it a go. Shooting for July with an optimistic outlook on the state of travel by then. Wanted to get thoughts from those in the know. I’m going as a single so times while not widely available seem to be out there. I have a VERY understanding and patient wife. Any thoughts on possible alterations are greatly appreciated.

Why are you staying in Inverness on Tuesday? This adds at least 3 hours of windshield time.

Yep, stay in Dornoch.

And OP, I'm sure you know this -- don't underestimate driving times!

All things considered, locking in a trip to the UK does seem pretty risky --- I'd sure wait for some definite information on travel/restrictions/etc. before booking anything, or wait until 2022, try the lottery for The Old Course and then make some plans after you find out the results.

On a Sunday you can play at Royal Aberdeen after 3.30. You can be ambitious and play Cruden Bay at 10 then RAGC at 4 ish; plenty of light.

This will work if you are staying in Aberdeen, its a 24 mile ish drive to Cruden Bay from RAGC, on the North side of town for both, the new road for half the journey has really sped up travel.

Aberdeen Inverness takes 3 hours ish and is only 105 miles. Aberdeen to St Andrews takes 1 hour 20 assuming Dundee traffic is fine. If you are going direct to Cruden Bay then the new Bypass will save you a lot of time!

Regarding travel to the UK, I would certainly hope everything will be OK by summer. I know we are screwed if we don't get visitors in 2021. Plus I want to go home to golf!

I prefer Jubilee over New; just the first 2 and last 2 holes are better. Both are not amazing courses, just nice to play.

The thought here was a little variety for the wife should she choose to take a day to herself (should have mentioned she’s traveling with me). How’s the availability in coffee shops/pubs in Dornoch?

Genuinely appreciate you bringing this up as I go back and forth on this daily.

We have a backlog in of trips to take.

Here’s my rational:

Tee times all have a large amount of flexibility (cancel up to 60 days all the way to 2 weeks for a full refund) as do most accommodations (either full refunds/or at minimum a credit). Flights are a totally different story that I can work through.

Keeping a close eye on how these next 4-5 months play out I could pull out of the entire trip with nothing lost. What the UK will look like from an experience standpoint is truly up in the air. If I’m fortunate enough to travel there come July and I didn’t give it a go I’d kick myself.

Ahhhh not a member there so not really that knowledgable, just looked, wonder what time on a Sunday they would define as afternoon, not clear on the website.

You realistically could comfortably tee off at 6pm at that time of year, depends how slow it is. June 21 or 22 I have teed off at 8pm and managed a full round at RAGC, tradition that I have not done for the last two summers.

If your wife enjoys walking the beach at Cruden Bay is gorgeous. Also where my dad lives(member Cruden Bay) Collieston, 3 miles away down the coast, there are some lovely walks along the cliffs.

Flights are the main thing, if you can pull out with no problem, then shouldn't be any other issues from a risk point of view if things here or there don't favor travel.

There would be more variety in Inverness, but for a day, plenty to see and do in Dornoch.  Two or three nice coffee shops/bakeries, what is called the Court Room (not sure if that was the name back in '18) was good.  Our favorite there had just opened and looks like it didn't last, but another little place is in the space now.  Some shops worth seeing, a nice little museum, good food readily available, a nice art/misc. nice goods shop, the cathedral is absolutely fascinating and a turn around the town is fun.  We were there several days and for us, one day wouldn't have been enough to check out everything.  And the beach is accessible for strolling/viewing.  Also what is claimed to be the best whisky bar in Scotland - it is really good! Also, she (and you for that matter) could go just up the road and check out Dunrobin Castle - it's awesome, and catch the super cool falconry/owl show - big highlight for us!

why not play dornoch twice on the same day? ... save a few dollars/quid/pounds/coin ...

problem for all of us next summer is flights ... if things open up, everyone will want to get out and travel, driving flight costs up ... book now, run the risk of not being able to use the flight if things aren't open ... various ways to deal with that and all, but it's an issue overall ...

Dornoch is a small, but quaint town. The thing is, Inverness is not special so the Mrs isn't really sacrificing much.

I did a similar trip many years ago.   Glasgow to St. Andrews to Nairn to Dornoch then back to Glasgow.

Total driving distance was something like 1,000 miles in 10 days.   We spent A LOT OF TIME in the car!

If I had to do it again, I'd stick to a smaller area of Scotland.   There's plenty of great golf in the Fife/Edinburgh area.   Yes, you'll miss out on the Highlands (Royal Dornoch and Brora), but you won't be sitting in the car for hours on end.

Mine did, too (and she enjoyed the golf)!

But the rounds she and daughter no. 2 didn't play they enjoyed going all over the town.  They were all excited because some "mendicant" choir was going to perform at the Cathedral the evening the other daughter and me enjoyed a second round on Royal Dornoch.  Somehow the person they saw that afternoon at the Cathedral who said "American" got misheard by them to be "mendican" so a little internet and they figured it must be some singing Mendicant Monks.  Well, they go to this concert expecting something haunting/mystical and interesting and it was some goofy little church group from . . . . . Texas and they were entertaining because they were so, well, not so good (my sincere apologies if any of you performed - I didn't witness the performance) and they had a good laugh afterward before and while joining my other daughter, me and the caddie who hosted us for drinks at the clubhouse.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Looks like Dornoch vs. Inverness for a base in the Highlands is the direction I'll go. Considering dropping Cruden for an extra day in Dornoch and to cut down on the drive time. Another question I had was aside from the Old Course any other courses where a caddie is highly recommended in your opinion?

We enjoyed caddies our first round at Royal Dornoch.  For our family group they were just what was needed.  I enjoyed walking and not having to push or carry, the conversation, the reads and the lines.  I don't know that caddies are "necessary" there, and the two of us that played a second round could have done it without after seeing the course, but had a couple of the same guys and enjoyed it.  We didn't use caddies at Brora and you could argue with some of the lines off the tees and landing blind a bit more they may have been more needed than at Royal Dornoch, but we had course guides and navigated just fine, I did spring for the motorized trolleys the second day, had never used one before.  We had caddies on The New and same ones on The Old and I wouldn't have wanted it different for that experience.  Very helpful on all sorts of things that made a difference, especially on The New.  Would probably do it again, but I would feel comfortable at any of the courses going without after the first go around.  Wife and I had caddies at North Berwick last year and made for a great time, but second round we didn't use caddies and no problems, I found it to be pretty straightforward (and great layout, IMO).  Didn't use them at most places and got along fine.

Some like caddies, some it's like a badge of honor they don't need/use them, some don't need them, whatever someone enjoys is what they should do.  We got lucky with all but one of ours (my wife had a borderline rude caddie at Royal Troon I found out too late after we played) and I enjoyed having the freedom just to walk and shoot the breeze (and get some help on the greens and tips on links golf).  Again, when we used trolleys, no issues and yes, they are golf courses and I've never had a caddie to date in the U.S. on any new golf course, but all depends on what you are looking for help with or what kind of experience is right for you.

Royal Dornoch is deserving IMO of its world renown status, but Brora was our spiritual favorite up there.  North Berwick IMO is a great course, and many folks' absolute favorite over there, but I enjoyed Royal Troon more for whatever reason and a course called West Kilbride was fun over Ayrshire way but not on any "must play" lists.  All a matter of taste.  All run second to The Old Course to me.  Call it the experience, for me also as much the course but it's almost "trendy" to downplay it and pooh pooh it.  Had someone from around here who has never played it but was over there and got a glimpse of it tell me it's a "goat track", lol.  Whatever.  I'm sure not everyone shared my lust for Kate Jackson as a youngster back in the early 70s (that would be The Rookies, for those of you who thought time started with Charlie's Angels)!

Kate Jackson!!! Now you are delving back! A much more interesting gal than FFM! I wonder if she plays golf - probably a member at Riviera. Sigh....

Honest take, unless you have money to burn or an insurance policy that still gives you pandemic cover I would shelve this till 2022.

I am Scottish and while we can still golf (in two balls and in our own area), we have been in essential full lockdown since the turn of the year, no schools or nurserys and it's not looking like changing until at least March. Even before then, in my area, pubs have been shut since September. I can play golf at my own club in my own local authority area, but I can't travel outwith that area for anything other than essential work.

The UK has finally implemented proper travel restrictions so you will face that hurdle, and the Scottish government have made noises about taking a stricter policy in terms of easing those restrictions. I believe all flights from Dubai and the UAE were banned from landing in Scotland at the end of the week.

Im not trying to be down on you, nothing worse than a cancelled holiday. Breaking the news to my kids last year that Disney land was off was a real lowlight. Just if i was you, prepare for or expect the worst and then you at least won't be disappointed.

On the plus side for me, we had access to stacks of tee times at high end courses that had been booked and cancelled by tourists last year. 🙂

Man, that sounds like a trip of a lifetime. I did a trip in 2018 to Scotland for my 50th. We played Crail, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, Muirfield, The Castle, The Old Course, and The Jubilee. I have a trip planned to Ireland for early October so I’m hoping everything opens up for you.

Coming to this a little late but I would find myself agreeing what those that think there might be a little more driving there than you would want. If the only reason for going to the Aberdeenshire area was to play Cruden Bay then my view would be to drop that region and concentrate on the Old Course and the courses around it and then the Highlands.

If you are going to head to the Highlands, I could not recommend Nairn enough. Tough but playable and always in great condition. The greens there are in my opinion are up there with the best we have. If I 10 rounds to play and had to divide them between Nairn and Castle Stuart, I would play Nairn 7 of those 10 times.

All of that said, the chances of you being able to do that this year are not looking great. Covid has really messed things up here. Whilst I am sure that we should shortly be able to move out of some restrictions in place, I suspect that it will be slower than it had been last year. At the moment, courses are not permitted visitors and members can only play with one other member at a time.

At least you are getting to play, down here south of the wall we can't even play alone.

I'm worried my clubs are going to forget their purpose in life.

Honestly, cannot believe that you guys are not allowed out there. At the end of the fist lockdown you guys were allowed back before we were which made no sense to us and now it’s flipped it still makes no sense. That said with the snow and the temperature hitting -12 here and -23 just a few miles away, I can’t see us getting much golf in for a little while 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ye my dad was golfing three times a week till mid December, hasn't since since it got proper cold.

Even links golf is too cold or snowy right now; he was jealous of me moaning 16*C was cold here yesterday for the range. Arctic blast here though for a week so see if I can still practice or play.

I just hope golf is back to normal for summer - 4 balls and comps. I have my member guest title on September 19 to defend!

When I get back to Scotland, my plan is to golf every day until it gets too cold.

Sounds like a solid plan! Can’t wait for some warmer weather and longer days. Can’t beat a game in the evening after work.
