3 wood shaft in a 5 wood head

Hey guys,

I play a SIM 5 wood that I loft down to 17 degrees, has a stock diamana 75fw shaft; I love it and this club has replaced my 3 wood.

Having the winter blues, I wanted to do some tinkering. I've always want something a little heavier so I recently picked up a Hzrdus Smoke Black 80 6.5 from a Titleist TS2 3 wood to throw in. I plan to have the playing length of the shaft somewhere between a 3 wood and 5 wood shaft length.

First off, has anyone hit the smoke black 80? I don't really see any reviews on this shaft. I have played the smoke black 60 and 70 and currently have the smoke green 70 in my SIM driver. Just wondering what I should expect from the fw shaft.

Secondly, has anyone done this before (putting a 3 wood shaft in a 5 wood)? Based on the limited reviews out there, I am a little hesitant the smoke black 80 6.5 will feel pretty stiff so i wasnt going to tip it. I imagine if I just butt trim it a little, the shaft will play a little softer due to the heavier 5 wood head?

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

Can't comment on the shaft, but in general, a longer shaft makes lie angle more upright and shorter shaft makes flatter. Don't know if this minor change will effect impact location for you or shot shape. I believe Sim adapter can adjust lie angle, so if currently playing std lie, you might try flat lie setting to counter any increase in lie angle from longer shaft. I wouldn't butt trim right away, play at 3W length, but grip down to simulate a 4W length and try the club out. Once you cut, can't add it back. Post how your experiment works out for you.

Aside from the lie angle being more upright - the swing weight will be much higher as well as will effect how the club and shaft play. You'll be adding upwards of 1.5-2" in shaft length depending on the specs of the shafts/OEM. The issue here is that the head itself even if it has a removable weight is usually very small like 2g or 5g and when you're adding that much shaft length, removing this small amount of weight may not be enough.

When callaway releases something like a heavenwood, the head weight is a certain spec from the factory to achieve a proper SW.

Probably 1 inch.

Two years ago had i25 3 and 5 woods, with the 5 wood shaft...

One year ago had 917 4wd 16.5.Still got 70diamana blue.Nice club.

Just got ts3 15 tensei av blue.Sweet combo.Whatever is different, its better, and longer vs 4wd .For me it matches driver length. The Av lo spin shaft is just better.Grab a TS2 or ts3 3 or 4 wood to help your testing😄I hear the Sim is the distance King.Im a vsteel guy so thats ok

I have the smoke black 80 6.5 in my 3 wood (TS3). I really like the feel - keeps launch down and keeps the ball straight to a nice fade (no left). I also have the OG hzrdus black 75 6 5 in my 5 wood (cobra LTD), and the feel is very consistent and reliable across both.

I put my 3w shaft (Diamana BF 70x) in my Sim 5w head and had the swing weight to about D2, and cut the shaft down to 5w length... plays fine. I had to put some counterbalance lead tape under the grip though. I ordered another Diamana BF 70TX to try and tip it to 5w suggestion instead to compare
