TM Spider X - Can I install a Double Bend Shaft instead of the Single Bend?

Is it possible to remove the single bend shaft and install a double bend? Anything to consider that makes this difficult or not ideal?

I don't think you can. That slant hosel is welded on at an angle. The double bend needs a stub hosel straight up.

I prefer a double bend. I used a WHP #7 for years and don’t like a single bend. It would be the spider x model that doesn’t have the slant neck but just the single bend.

I call those toe hang spider hosels slant hosels.

But the single bend Spider-X is face balanced. Doesn't have a hosel.

It has a stub that the shaft glues onto. 

 

I'm assuming OP is talking about going from toe hang (slant hosel) to face balanced (double bend shaft).

Yes, the (single bend) shaft attaches to the nub protruding out of the head.  But you mentioned a "slant" hosel and toe down.

 

But a double bend typically makes the putter face balanced - but it already is with the single bend (hence my question about the op).

Gotcha. I figured he was talking about the slant hosel. 

 

I HATE face balanced putters so I didn't even know there are single and double bend shafts...lol. I figured they're all double bend.

Guys - I’m taking about converting a single bend spider x to a double bend. Nothing to do with slant neck

I suppose you can do it as they attach exactly the same way.

No worries. I'm exactly the same. When I suggested a while back it was a double bend shaft I was corrected here on WRX about it being single bend.

Hold your single bend at a 60 degree angle to the floor, balanced on its toe. You hold the grip end. 

 

Now, kick the shaft about 3 inches above the heel of the putter...boom, double bend.

The single bend already IS face balanced.

 

Hold the putter parallel to the floor.

 

Hold the grip in one hand and with the other hand place your index finger under the shaft about 12 inched from the head and let the club lie naturally.

 

The face points straight to the sky.

 

Or lie on a flat surface parallel with the floor where only the shaft is lying on said flat surface. Same-same, the face should point straight up.

Not sure what you mean about how it "looks" but whether or not you can install the double bend and have it be face balanced ya gotta ask the professionals.

Double bend visually looks different than single bend. That’s all I am saying. I really like the spider x head I just am used to DB that’s all

Generally can't switch between single and double bend shafts, at least not w/o major surgery.  The single bend heads generally have the second bend built into the shaft attachment point.   Using a double bend shaft would end up giving you a triple bend.

DB bended shafts is to make offset on hosel less putter heads, and if yours is single bend, the offset parameter should be taken care of already.

You should post photos of the putter you got, but yes, we can most likely change if absolutely wanted, but it will made the look from address very different vs now, but maybe thats how you like it? (shaft in front of the face)

PS! DB bended shafts is a PITA to install correct. (shaft to face angle)

I dont have personal experience but it looks like the shaft is glued over a "knob" coming up from the head.  Therefore it should be a matter of just heating the epoxy and pulling the shaft off.  Similar to this.

You can do it, but the trick will be to get the exact same double bend putter shaft that TM uses.  Use a generic one or one from another OEM and you can get varied results (not face balanced and ugly or face balanced and ugly or maybe it will work out).

I wouldn't assume that the shaft install tab is the same for both double and single bend head models.  I can't say for sure for that model but typically they will be set at very different angles.  If that's the case, it would take more than just making sure it's a TM double bend shaft.

It will very likely require bending the stem in order to fix any shaft lean/lie angle issue that comes from the change. I have never bent the stem on a TM Spider so not sure how friendly it is. 

 

Just bent the stem on a Scotty Phantom. Got about 2-3 degrees out of it. Just for reference though it may be apples and oranges with TM since I don't know what metal they use on those.

I think it's just the angle of the pic.

 

I don't believe TM has ever made a Spider-X with a double bend. Only single bend.

 

The older Spider TOUR, yes, double bend. The "X" ? Don't think so.

FWIW, a store near me had a Scotty Phantom in the used rack whose lie angle had been made more upright.

 

Wasn't done very well though. Tried to sole the club flat on the floor and it immediately tilted closed quite a bit. The whole balance was off.  

 

Probably just a poorly executed/ amateur job as I expect a Scotty should be able to have its lie angle adjusted a bit - if done properly.
