P770, Apex 19, or Z765?

I posted this question in my WITB thread, but usually guys get better/quicker responses on the equipment threads.

 

I posted my TM Tour Preferred Irons for sale last night and thought I might be able to sell them within a couple of weeks (or not), but ended up getting multiple offers and sold them in less than 16 hours, Lol!

 

They were beautiful clubs, but found the 4-7 MC, 8-PW MB combo pretty unforgiving and lost quite a bit of distance from my previous clubs that were older entry level clubs.

 

New clubs aren’t really in my budget right now, so have it narrowed down to 4 older Irons...would love to get feedback from anyone who’s gamed/hit these before?

 

-TaylorMade P770 (‘17) w/ Project X Rifle 6.0 shafts

-Callaway Apex 19 w/ True Temper Elevate Tour shafts

-Srixon Z765 (‘16) w/ Dynamic Gold S300 shafts

-Callaway Apex Pro 19 w/ KBS C-Taper or Project X Rifle 6.0

 

Or any other used CB Irons that go for a decent price?

EDIT: Additional details, I didn’t play for over 10 yrs and started playing again in June and got my Handicap down to 6.0. I’m 6’7 and a natural athlete who formerly played College Basketball and has an athletic swing. My average carry w/ a 7-iron went from 150-155 w/ my old clubs to 140-145 w/ the Tour Preferred, so hoping to get that distance back with more forgiveness.

My favorite of those are the Callaway Apex 2019....However that shaft is the least like the other options (PX 6.0 and DG300)

 

Do you need a low launch shaft?

 

I wasn't a fan of PX....So for me if you need a lower launch the Srixons would be the choice

I’m still learning about different shafts and honestly not sure what the differences are between the different shafts. My Tour Preferred’s had True Temper XP 95 S300, and they launched up to the moon! I think that’s part of why I lost so much distance, the ball was flying up instead of getting proper distance.

 

What didn’t you like about the PX’s?

And before anyone says I should get fit...I know 100% that’s true, but I’m on 2 waiting lists to get fit. In my area everything is locked down, and once fitters re-open they’ve told me that they have to make up 2 months of cancelled appointments before they can start working on the waiting lists (so will probably be potentially May-June before I can get fit).

Apex 19 not only won 5 out of 5 across the board in golf digest reviews but having played them myself for multiples seasons I’m convinced they may go down as the best players distance irons of this era. They get overshadowed by P790 all the time but highly recommend you give this one a try.

I’ve read some really good reviews for the Apex 19 and they are really intriguing for sure! I’d say I’m leaning towards the P770, but the Apex 19 have my attention! Have you hit the P770 too? How do you find the size of the head of the Apex, are they still pretty small or a larger profile at address?

I haven’t hit the 770 so can’t comment on those, but the Apex and z765s are both brilliant. 
 

I just sold the z765s after owning them from new and loved them - I’m still not convinced I did the right thing! Very consistent and surprisingly long players irons. 
 

I now have Apex which are more forgiving, longer (due to lofts, but lofts are actually pretty similar to the srixons) and still look decent behind the ball. 
 

on good ball striking days, I’d choose the z765s and on bad days I’m thankful for the added help from the Apex!

don’t think you can go wrong with either, and I think it’ll depend on whether you feel like you’re getting better and want the precision (srixon) or embracing dad golf and slowly getting worse (like me) and fancy some help from the Apex.

Interesting. So you find the Apex 19 both longer and more forgiving? So the only advantage with the Z 765 would be more feel and control then?

I played the P770 , excellent clubs. Have tried everything pre 2021 releases and they are still the pick.

I actually have the Apex 16, but yes, Apex are longer and more forgiving, but z765 feel a bit better and just seem very consistent on a good day. 
 

Both are great sets - I’d gladly have the z765 again, but equally enjoying the Apex. With a dodgy shoulder and more sporadic golf, the Apex probably shade it for my current situation.

I haven’t tried the P770 as I’m not a big TM fan but I will admit they look amazing! I know this isn’t the best answer but Apex size to me is basically middle - not compact blade like but certainly not offensively oversized either.

isn't px rifle 6.0 much stouter than elevate tour? I also heard z765 is kind of meh compared to z745.

Ah, the first person taking P770...nice!! I was leaning towards P770, but was starting to get convinced to take a much harder look at the Apex’s. How would you compare the P770’s to the Apex’s and Z 765?

So you’re 6’7 with long arms and a former college athlete? What’s your driver swing if you know? From what i’ve found the dg s300 shaft fits what you are looking for the best while the other two shafts are marketed as mid-high launch and spin.

I’m still getting a feel for what different shafts bring to the table and the strengths and weaknesses of each one. To be 100% honest, I don’t know that much about shafts.

Yup, 6’7 with a 6’11 wingspan. I’ve never measured my swing speed, but my average driving distance with a Callaway Rogue was 240-260 on the low side and 275-290 on the high side. I think it will be longer and more consistent now that I’ve got a SIM Max D, but we’ll see in the Spring!

Good to know. I’m more of a TM guy than a Callaway guy, although I own and game both. I was leaning towards the P770, but you guys are talking me out of it, Lol!

You can’t really go wrong with any of the club heads so that’s up to you, but I would lean towards the srixons because of the shafts. When you play how quickly do your shots stop on the green?

Interesting. I’m still learning about the differences in shafts and I guess I never understood how important shaft choices are. I tend to have problems keeping the ball on the green...overshooting it and coming in too hot tends to be one of my issues.

Oh believe me I was never a Callaway guy either until I got my Apex 19. Next thing you know I have the Epic Flash driver and a Mavrik SZ fairway wood 🤷‍♂️ Sounds like personal preference is going to end up winning for you so keep the P770 as front runner and then maybe add P790 as the distance alternative to compare against (same class as Apex 19). Someone mentioned it before but think the shaft might end up being just as much if not the more important selection in your specific process.

So there may be an issue with your delivery of the club at impact. That could be the shaft or you, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Do you have an estimate of how high your 7 iron goes?

first off geez man i didn't know you were 6'7! You played college hoops down south or in Canada? I played CEGEP ball in Quebec but was too slow to go any further than that...switched to FB

 

They are different irons. The pros are a bit smaller but if you're a 6.0 i wouldn't stress too much

 

My concern is more the shafts, they'll be as important as the heads. You're a big guy, as you get better you might swing faster especially with your long swing. The Elevate shafts in the Apex 19 might scare me off a bit. You mentioned earlier you launched some lighter shafts to the moon. 

 

The Apex pros with S300 or Ctaper are awesome options

Haha...thanks! Probably a little of both. My loft was extremely high with my old Tour Preferred’s (7 iron was MC) with True Temper XP 95 S300 shafts. Tough to make an estimate, would just say extremely high compared to the previous irons I had before.

Haha...yeah, I wrote “College” for our American friends, but it’s University Basketball for us Canucks! I played University ball in the Maritimes, but also played Football in HS as well!

 

Thanks very much for the advice on shafts, definitely have to gain more knowledge on that for sure. So many layers of learning with golf! I had DG S300 shafts in my previous wedges and KBS Tour in another one of my clubs and they were both really good for sure.

Save some money and go with the Apex '16 if you can find a set in decent shape. It's still one of the best clubs I've hit in my demo sessions since, but didn't end up going that route just because I was looking for something with a bit less offset, and more precise. Surely you could find a solid used set on ebay in pretty good shape for 200-300 less than what you would pay for anything else you mentioned. The TM '17 770's still demand some consistent ball-striking. While you won't lose as much distance as off-center as you would with your TP's, it still feels like garbage when you miss it.

Reading up more on all the different shafts, and yeah you guys are right...some of these shafts wouldn’t be a good fit for my game at all.

 

Maybe it’ll take more than 24 hours to find new irons after all! 😬

Good to know on the P770 for sure, thanks. Haven’t come across any Apex ‘16’s yet, but sounds like something to consider. I guess in selling my 2014 Tour Preferred’s, I was planning on getting something newer in the 2017-19 range, but I’m open minded!

Yeah, might have to do some more research. The P770 was definitely what I was leaning towards, but the info on shafts everyone is giving me definitely helps. What shafts do you have in your P770’s?

 

My previous Irons were extended by 1” and were 1* upright, and my wedges were extended by 1.25”.
