Young Guys Using Lightweight Graphite In Their Irons?

Recommended Posts

Any younger guys gaming light weight graphite in their irons? I tried my buddies set that has Recoil 780s in both F3 in the short irons and F4 in the mid and long irons. I was thoroughly impressed with the performance. I got a higher flight, tighter dispersion and picked up a clubs worth of distance compared to my own set. I currently have DG pros in S300 in my gamers. The dispersion leaves a lot to be desired and I wouldn't sneeze at a little extra elevation. A little background, I'm 33, 5'11 and 180 lbs. I'm also a gym rat and do Muay Thai so I consider myself very fit. My driver swing speed is low to mid 100s and my average drive is around 265. Have a moderate tempo, smooth transition and mid release so I don't put a huge amount of load on the shaft. Also tried a wedge shafted with the graphite version of the project X LZ and loved it even more than the recoils. My only concern is being able to flight the ball down in the wind. I think I might be a graphite guy from now on.

What do you consider "young"? I'm turning 42 with 15 years of Muay Thai and Freefight in the past (stopped more than 10 years ago though).

I am playing very light shafts, Mizuno Platinum MFusion, and feel much more comfortable with these than heavier shafts I tried... but that may be because I chose to start playing golf with light shafts.

I just turned 30 and have been gaming UST Mamiya Recoil ESX 460 in my irons for the past year, I've liked them a lot but i feel they might be too light where i lose some feel/control of the club head at times. Been thinking to try out some lighter steel shafts like the NS Pro 950

5'7, 176 lbs., 40 years old, personal trainer with bodybuilding backround.  Have been lifting weights since I was 19.  Anyways, the recoils are very good good iron shafts and if that's what gave you the best numbers then that's what you should go with, but look into the MMT 105 S if you haven't already.  They launch lower and spin less than the recoils, but very stable where as the recoils can get a bit off line at times.  I had the recoil protos and they produced a little more side spin than I wanted.  Dispersion and distance control are the most important things in my book when it comes to iron shafts

I’m new to golf and also young and fit. I lift weights and train probably 4-5 times a week and with driver SS about 115 mph but I have light graphite in my irons. They were used clubs but they’re Recoil F4 which is around 86g. I have the same problem with my balls tending to launch too high and it’s hard to keep down when windy. Luckily I live in Southern California so it’s mostly sunny year round and only slightly windy in Dec and Jan.

I’m assuming you’re similar to me where we definitely have the speed for heavier iron shafts. Personally I like the lighter weight and typically hit a baby draw because I’ve learnt to be patient at the top and control my tempo. People always talk about shaft “loading” with heavier shafts but honestly they’re probably nerds that don’t exercise often. Only problem with lighter shafts for me is that I get consistency issues sometimes when I’m tired and not focused resulting in a nasty duck hook. Also happens if my tempo and transition gets too fast. Not sure if you’re the same with iron distance and dispersion.

For me I’m happy with my distances and am starting to work on distance control. Dispersion could definitely be better which is why I’m moving into a slightly heavier shaft- Nippon 120s which are still on the light side compared to most irons but demand a smooth tempo. I’d suggest you try those if you want to transition to steel shafts but don’t want to make a huge jump in weight. Good luck

I'm 40 and I've been playing since I was 5. I recently moved from heavy to mid-weight shafts (now in C-Taper Lite X which are 115g). I think a lot of us who have played over that period of time would have a hard time going to very light shafts because there's so much ingrained feel. That weight class simply didn't exist for most of our time. On the other hand, for somebody newer to the game it makes all the sense in the world to consider every option. If the fitting supports it and the real world results are there then that's all that matters.

Haha I think we'll make age 50 the cut off since that's the age for PGA Tour Champions

Great responses. Sounds like it's a very individual thing and can work for some and not so much for others.

My fist set of clubs were an old set of Bullet Tour blades with 130 gram Dynamic Gold Steel shafts. That was 20 years ago. Since then I've stuck with mid weight 115ish gram steel because I felt like I was working to hard to swing heavier shafts. I had Modus 130s for a very short time but felt like I had to swing at 95% to get the most out of them. I've also had a set with Nippon 1050s and they felt too "mushy" if that makes since. In my mind light weight graphite "should not work" but the performance speaks for itself. I'm looking to buy a set of Srixons that have Recoil 760s installed which was the catalyst for posing the question. I'm a little reluctant to jump into a sub 80 gram shaft that I will not be able to test.

Finding that flight- into the wind - is a must....graphite or steel

I'm even lower ss 90s , yet use heavyweight graphite mixed with steel

Played VS Proto100 - Recoil 95/110/125 - Steelfiber 110 - Tour AD 115 - xcaliber 95 over the years[even stock TFC Ping graphite]
