Steelfiber, Low Toe contact

FirePro

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone

When I ordered my Srixon Z745's a while back I did so with Steelfiber i110X shafts.  I have since replaced them as I was missing low toe on all my irons which just does not happen with the shafts I replaced them with.  I want to get back into the steelfiber shafts as I am developing some hand pain and am hoping they will help.  I am looking to get into the i95 shafts but am up in the air as to which flex to get, I am not sure if the i110X were just to stiff which caused the low toe contact or if it was a swing weight issue.  I did notice that the swing weight were lower than what I normally use.

I appreciate the help

Chirps are also welcome

The X is a pretty stout shaft.  There are a descent number that normally play X flex in other shafts that have stepped down to S flex in the SFs.

With that being said, you would be migrating further away from the shaft weight you are already playing, which could be the issue you had moving down to the 110s.  Perhaps going to the 125s would be a more suitable move there?

I did think of that too but the pain in my hand is at the top of my swing and assumed it was due to the overall weight of the clubs so I figured a reduction in weight and going to graphite would be best.  I may just have to learn to swing with them possibly

Not the cheapest route, but if not having a fitter around that has SF as an option...perhaps ordering one of each weight class and installing in a single iron is a potential course of action?  May not appear to be beneficial, but maybe losing $50 vs >$300 if the plan doesn't go as planned is the lesser of two evils.

As a point of reference. I changed from DG 300S to the i95S shafts. From a stiffness perspective, I found them reasonably close. The 110's are a completely different animal. They are not just a heavier i95.

BTW.. I play the SF95's in my 745s.

I talked to a Aerotech rep and he said they are no different but having hit thei110X and my buddies i95s there were different per my feel

I think the i95X will fit the bill for me then i125S in my 56 and 60

I appreciate the feedback but disappointed in the lack of Chirps

The point you feel the pain isn't necessarily related to the root cause of the pain.  They can be related, but aren't always.

It could be the i110 X were too stiff.  It could be the swingweight affected you.  It could be the static weight that affected you.  Demo or fitting could help answer that question.

The Steelfiber is largely a beefier-bottom-section version of DG.  It's true in the i95, i110, and i125 models.  How much beefier the bottom section is will vary by the model; the i95 profile is very close to the profile of DG, while the 110 and 125 are stronger in that bottom half of the shaft.

And, the 110 has that higher balance point that causes some folks issues.  Having been through it with KBS Tour (also higher balance point), I know it would cause issues for me.  I expect I'm not alone in the universe.  😉

I wonder if dropping to stiff would be a good fit, maybe in the 125?  <shrug>

Also wonder if you might do better with a slightly different profile.  I only know enough to be dangerous about the $-Taper shaft profile, but I didn't think it was the softer butt/stiffer tip profile that typifies DG.  I wonder if the Fuji Pro Tour Spec iron shafts, or the PX Catalyst 100, would be a good fit?  <even more shrugging>

I have a confession to make and having built many a iron sets its embarrassing and for sure the wrong way to build a set but I purchased a set of BB&F Ferrules and want a more steel looking shaft hence wanting to go with the Steelfibers

Maybe try a test club with i125 in Stiff, or even X?  You could even try hardstepping stiff or softstepping X?

Building your own makes it a lot easier IMHO.  🙂

Chirps are also welcome

Though I didn't play i110cw X - I played Stiff.  Even at my age I could play X in graphite but chose not to.

I also bought n tested i95cw stiff shafts before settling on i110cw stiff in 620 series heads.  I am a hitter of the ball so 110S is a good shaft for my mechanics as opposed to i95S.  The difference is - 110 have a stiffer handle and slightly softer frequency tip - i95 has a slightly softer handle but stiffer tip section - IMO they are for people that swing the club as opposed to people like me that have fast transitions and hit the ball.

Using my 2i as an example, I would consistently hit it straight 215yds - with i95 shaft it was 220+ because it was lighter, but also had a fade that I didn't like.

Graphite swing weight should be adjusted at install, but depends on head weight of each iron.  I had mine built at D1/D2, using tungsten powder and my current shafts - Tensei AV White graphite Stiff, were built the same, at D2.  I hit these shafts even further.  I suspect that's because they have a HIGH bend, as opposed to mid-high bend of Steelfiber i110 and i95 .

110 are way different is the way they launch imo I ended up with SF125 46*-58*

I've been through this quite a bit

110 in Recoil feel 1000x better just free swinging IMO. SF95 kill my wrist/fingers

PS Those BB&F would look schweet in a custom Recoil 110 prototype blue w/white graphics

  • 1 month later...

Went with i95X 5-PW + 50deg and i125S in 56 and 60deg

Played my first round with them and shot an 82 which is decent for me considering I haven't played much the last few years.  A couple approach shots went a little long on me which I assume was due to them being lighter and actually brought my contact more to the middle of the club face.  I could not be happier with these shafts.
